The Need For Diversity In The Tourism And Hospitality Industry, Joel Frater

Visions in Leisure and Business

Examined at a macro level, there are several key factors that are likely to influence the tourism and hospitality industry. The first factor is the changing face of the American population. A second factor is the rate of growth of the tourism industry. A third, and very important factor is the extent to which the industry embraces diversity. There is a need for industries to reach out to a diverse group of customers and employees. The need for cross-cultural responsiveness and the adoption of training models is apparent. This paper examines population and travel industry data-trends as a corner stone …

A University/K-12 Parnership That Works, Dianne Fields

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

As stated in the Turning Points 2000, Educating Adolescents for the 21 '1 Century, the entirety of a teachers career should be a seamless continuum of learning and development focused on student learning. Critical steps along the continuum include high-quality pre-service teacher preparation, carefully designed mentoring and induction programs. This statement only reinforces what we have been doing in a partnership between Eastern Washington University and Shaw Middle School for the past seven years. The program provides a year long experience in one school for pre-service teachers. This enables the pre-service teachers to increase their understanding of the school, its …

Re-Interpreting The Effect Of Rights: Career Narratives And The Americans With Disabilities Act, David Engel, Frank W. Munger

Articles & Chapters

This article examines how the employment rights guaranteed by the Americans

with Disabilities Act (ADA) affect the careers of individuals with disabilities. The

article draws on in-depth interviews with sixty adults who provided extended life

story narratives, describing early family and educational experiences and later

experiences with employment. Their detailed accounts offer insights into the

sometimes subtle role rights play in peoples lives and careers. Relatively few

rights violations actually lead to explicit or formal invocations of the law. The

effect of the ADA on careers can be profound but is primarily indirect or

symbolic. Moreover, other factors affect the …

Kajian Keberkesanan Dasar Anti Dadah Malaysia, Ismail Haji Ahmad

Student Works (2000-2009)

The Study reveals new important findings about the effectiveness of Malaysian Anti-Drug Policy. Based on the two levels of analysis; the policy itself and the surveyed respondents, the study shows that drug problem remain critical due to the lack of enforcement and rehabilitation. This resulted in the rise of the drug addiction and trafficking cases over the last five years (1996-2000). The newly established anti drug agencies failed, relative to their predecessors, to curtail such problems. Rehabilitation programmes which largely focused 0n new addicts provided greater room for the hardcore addicts to have a direct contact with the potential addicts …

Moving Toward A First-Best World: Minnesota's Position On Multiethnic Adoptions, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2001

Moving Toward A First-Best World: Minnesota's Position On Multiethnic Adoptions, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

The best world allows a child to grow to adulthood with biological parents, or at least one parent, who love the child unconditionally and who have resources to support the child. A second-best world allows the child to permanently and completely become part of an extended family that loves him or her and has the resources for supporting and meeting the child's needs. Hopefully this process costs little in terms of time or emotional or physical harm to the child. In traditional third-party adoptions, the child permanently moves and becomes part of (hopefully, at low cost) a family that will …

A Place For All Seasons: Examining Youth Shelters And The Youth-In-Trouble Network In Toronto (Ontario), Jeffrey Michael Karabanow

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study focuses upon youth shelters as non-profit, voluntary organizations, and their relationship with formal child welfare systems. Two case examples, Covenant House (CH) and Youth Without Shelter (YWS) are examined through archival material, participant observations of "shelter culture," and structured/unstructured interviews with front line and managerial shelter workers. These methodological tools provide a distinct portrait of the evolution, the "life stories," and the present day activities of two prominent Toronto youth shelters. The findings suggest that both Shelters' operating goals have been modified in order to reach a. suitable partnership with more entrenched and formal child welfare organizations (such …

Like A Banana Tree : Towards A Model Of Children In Disasters : An Exploration Of An Anthropological Problem, Jennie Anne Ricarda Marten

Theses : Honours

There is currently an emerging literature on the anthropology of disasters, and also an emergent literature on the new anthropology of childhood and children. Despite an extensive search, no significant body of literature on the anthropology of children in natural event based disasters could be found. A central focus of this thesis will be interrogate this gap through a documentary search, to ascertain what factors might influence the absence of children in the anthropology of disasters. To achieve this, the study defines and conceptualizes both the anthropology of disasters and the anthropology of children. Recent research shows that children are …
