Provocateurs For Justice, Jane H. Aiken Jan 2001

Provocateurs For Justice, Jane H. Aiken

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Clinical legal education offers unique opportunities to inspire law students to commit to justice. Merely providing a justice experience is not enough. We must provoke a desire to do justice in our students. As provocateurs, we determine where our students are in the developmental process toward "justice readiness." This article outlines those developmental stages and suggests interventions to assist students in their transition from stage to stage. Being "justice ready" requires sensitivity to the ways in which assumptions color all aspects of our cases. The article closes with suggestions and examples of how to critically reflect on assumptions that hinder …

Strengthening Social Science Research On Women's Health: Lessons Learned From A Capacity Building Programme, M.E. Khan, Bella C. Patel, John Townsend Jan 2001

Strengthening Social Science Research On Women's Health: Lessons Learned From A Capacity Building Programme, M.E. Khan, Bella C. Patel, John Townsend

Reproductive Health

The International Conference on Population and Development in 1994 led to an upsurge in interest in implementing reproductive health (RH) programs worldwide. The urgency to act has led to the development of disparate activities in several developing countries including India. While programs have been growing in numbers, their quality is in question. A fundamental problem has been lack of capacity at all levels of the health service system to respond to the paradigm shift articulated by the advocates of the reproductive health and rights agenda. To redesign programs, considerable research must be undertaken to understand the health needs and sociocultural …

Asymptotic Inference In Censored Regression Models Revisited, Chihwa Kao Jan 2001

Asymptotic Inference In Censored Regression Models Revisited, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

This paper establishes that regressors in the models with censored dependent variables need not be bounded for the standard asymptotic results to apply. Thus, regressors that grow monotonically with the observation index may be acceptable. It also purports to provide an upper bound on the rate at which regressors may grow.

Communication And Professional Civility As A Basic Service Course: Dialogic Praxis Between Department And Situated In An Academic House, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz Jan 2001

Communication And Professional Civility As A Basic Service Course: Dialogic Praxis Between Department And Situated In An Academic House, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz

Basic Communication Course Annual

Communication departments frequently offer basic service courses to other campus departments or schools. A communication course sensitive to the mission of the university or college of which it is a part, as well as to its own mission, allows programs that include such a course in their curriculum to distinguish themselves from competing programs. Additionally, such a mission-sensitive course further defines departmental and university identity, assisting in institutionalizing a mission. Offering such a course provides an opportunity for dialogic praxis to occur between departments situated within the context of a local institution. Dialogic praxis involves knowledge of one's own position, …

Social Work Practitioners And Technology Transfer, Anna M. Scheyett, Amelia C. Roberts, Raymond Kirk Jan 2001

Social Work Practitioners And Technology Transfer, Anna M. Scheyett, Amelia C. Roberts, Raymond Kirk

Faculty and Staff Publications

The application of new skills and interventions into the practice community is often slow and haphazard. A coaching intervention is proposed to augment traditional social work education techniques and maximize the integration of new knowledge into social work practice. This coaching model includes assessment of a practitioner's readiness for change, stage-wise coaching interventions, assessment of organizational barriers to the transfer of new information, and development of strategies to address these barriers. Implications for social work professionals development and future research are discussed.

Emerging Strong From A Difficult Adolescence: A Qualitative Study Of Resilience, Vivian Horovitch Jan 2001

Emerging Strong From A Difficult Adolescence: A Qualitative Study Of Resilience, Vivian Horovitch

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight, second and third year university students who self-identified as having emerged intact from a difficult adolescence. Questions were asked with regard to stress, protective factors, resources, and coping strategies during adolescence, as well as about how they achieved a sense of well-being. Themes derived from qualitative analysis are highlighted in a chronological life story for each participant. Common themes for participants’ coping during adolescence included distraction and avoidance strategies, such as keeping active with sports, extracurricular activities, religion, or arts. More “mature” coping strategies emerged as participants neared early adulthood. These included strategies …

Self-Disclosure, Clara E. Hill, Sarah Knox Jan 2001

Self-Disclosure, Clara E. Hill, Sarah Knox

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

A review of the analog literature about therapist self-disclosure suggests that nonclients generally have positive perceptions of therapist self-disclosures. A review of the naturalistic psychotherapy literature indicates that therapist self-disclosure occurs infrequently, is used more often by humanistic-experiential than psychoanalytic therapists, is most often about professional background than about intimate personal details, is used for many different reasons, is used cautiously by therapists, and is helpful in the immediate process of therapy. Effects of therapist self-disclosure on the ultimate outcome of therapy are less clear. Limitations of the research (poor and inconsistent definitions and lack of a clinically appropriate methodology …

Pastoral Visitation Of The Sick: Reflections Of A Japanese Pastor, Kazuhito Yamada

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This project was designed to show the importance of the pastor’s role and actions in visiting the sick. The study is focused mainly on pastoral visitation to hospitalized patients. Interpreting the written texts of pastoral theologians and the research reports on pastoral care and practice in professional journals. I consider the pastor‘s important role as the representative of God and the symbolic nature of the pastor's role. On this basis, I discuss the pastor‘s actions in visiting the hospitalized patients. Prayer, a ministry of presence, and listening are the significant pastoral actions to the patients. In considering the patients’ satisfaction …

The Effectiveness Of Residential Facilities For The Treatment Of Disruptive Behavior Disorders., Michelle Colette Hainesworth Jan 2001

The Effectiveness Of Residential Facilities For The Treatment Of Disruptive Behavior Disorders., Michelle Colette Hainesworth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBDs) consist of four categories of syndromes known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Disorder (CD), and DBD Not Otherwise Specified (NOS). They are the most prevalent disorders in children and adolescents and the most common reason for referral to residential treatment centers (RTC). However, little research exists concerning RTCs efficacy in treating disruptive behavior. The following study attempted to take a comprehensive approach in that it evaluated the effectiveness of an RTC, including the specific treatments that contributed to a positive outcome. The study also took the investigation a step further …

Minnie Low was a leader among the Chicago women who worked in social reform and social service between 1890 and 1920. Low was born in New York City, the second child of six in a Jewish family. Her parents' names, occupations, and country of birth are unknown. When she was ten years old, the family moved to Chicago, where she finished elementary school. She attended South Division High School for less than a year and left school because she was in poor health.

Aha? Is Creativity Possible In Legal Problem Solving And Teachable In Legal Education?, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jan 2001

Aha? Is Creativity Possible In Legal Problem Solving And Teachable In Legal Education?, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article continues and expands on my earlier project of seeking to describe how legal negotiation should be understood conceptually and undertaken behaviorally to produce better solutions to legal problems. As structured problem solving requires interests, needs and objectives identification, so too must creative solution seeking have its structure and elements in order to be effectively taught. Because research and teaching about creativity and how we think has expanded greatly since modern legal negotiation theory has been developed, it is now especially appropriate to examine how we might harness this new learning to how we might examine and teach legal …

Implementation And Evaluation Of A Leadership Mentoring Program In The Hampden Heights Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Barry Tryon Jan 2001

Implementation And Evaluation Of A Leadership Mentoring Program In The Hampden Heights Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Barry Tryon

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Leadership development is a vital but often neglected part of church life. In many churches little is taught on the subject to the current leaders of the church, and even less is done for the development o f future leaders. In addition, the traditional seminar approach, when used, is not always effective in developing church leaders. One program, written by Dr. Dan Reiland, seems to address both o f these problems. Joshua's Men is a spiritual leadership training program using mentoring (discipleship) to grow potential leaders in the church. Is this program effective? Does it develop spiritual leaders in …

The Institutional Production Of Literary Value: Studies Of African-American Popular Music Lyrics And The Avant-Garde., Carl Silvio Jan 2001

The Institutional Production Of Literary Value: Studies Of African-American Popular Music Lyrics And The Avant-Garde., Carl Silvio

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent decades have witnessed series of debates over the nature of the texts studied by literary studies. Some argue that the literary text is first and foremost defined by its aesthetic value, while others claim that the discipline should regard its object as a social document which reveals information about the society that produced it and exerts an ideological effect upon its cultural context. These debates, between what are usually termed “traditional” and “cultural studies” approaches to literature reveal a central contradiction that has divided the discourse of aesthetic value since its formulation in the Eighteenth century. The question of …
