Power In Sexual Relationships: An Opening Dialogue Among Reproductive Health Professionals, Population Council, Interagency Gender Working Group (Igwg) Jan 2001

Power In Sexual Relationships: An Opening Dialogue Among Reproductive Health Professionals, Population Council, Interagency Gender Working Group (Igwg)

Reproductive Health

The discussions summarized in this report indicate that gender-based power inequalities hinder communication between partners, limit the ability of individuals and couples to talk about or achieve desired child spacing and family-size goals, limit effective use of reproductive health services, undercut men’s and women’s attainment of sexual health and pleasure, and increase substantially their vulnerabiliy to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. This report summarizes the proceedings of a meeting, co-sponsored by the Population Council and USAID’s Men and Reproductive Health Subcommittee, that responded to an increasing groundswell of interest in opening a dialogue on power in sexual relationships. The …

Problem-Based Learning. A Critical Review Of Its Educational Objectives And The Rationale For Its Use, Samy A. Azer Jan 2001

Problem-Based Learning. A Critical Review Of Its Educational Objectives And The Rationale For Its Use, Samy A. Azer

Neurosciences

Over the past 30 years there has been an increasing interest in curriculum innovation in medical schools in North America, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Australia. Since the introduction of problem-based learning at McMaster University in Canada in 1969, several medical schools throughout the world have adopted problem-based learning as the educational and philosophical basis of their curricula. Several studies have shown that problem-based learning is an important educational strategy for integrating the curriculum, motivating the students and helping them to identify their learning issues and set their own learning goals. However, there is a great deal of concern regarding …

Problems of Parkinson’s Disease within the Arab world are discussed and a number of solutions are presented that will help in the management of Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease. Problems related to the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale are also discussed and convey a multitude of problems culturally distinct to the Arab world. Problems related to the medical treatment, selection of patients for surgery, the surgery itself …

Extracranial-Intracranial Bypass Surgery In Cerebrovascular Diseases, Jens Haase Jan 2001

Extracranial-Intracranial Bypass Surgery In Cerebrovascular Diseases, Jens Haase

Neurosciences

Since the report from the International Study on extracranial-intracranial bypass was presented in 1985, an abrupt stop to almost all bypass surgery was introduced. The clear goals of the bypass study to reduce repeated strokes based on extracranial-intracranial bypass could not be documented. This review emphasizes the drawbacks of this previous study and why its conclusions were too sweeping, including statements that the study could not validate. The present status on cerebral hemodynamics and possible augmentations of reduced cerebral vascular reserve using extracranial-intracranial bypass are given. It is concluded that in hemodynamic proven cases extracranial-intracranial bypass may definitely benefit the …

The Ukrainian Cossacks, Iryna Shuvit Jan 2001

The Ukrainian Cossacks, Iryna Shuvit

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Who are those who defended the city gates of Vienna from the Turkish invasion of 1683? Who founded the first democratic state according to Karl Marx? What historical figure in this group honors with his name an airport in Paris? The group was known as the Ukrainian Cossacks - both a controversial and important group in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. And the historical figure is Pylyp Orlyk, the founder of the first Ukrainian Constitution in 1709. Who were the Cossacks? Although their definition ranges from freebooters and Turkish renegades, to unruly brutes and murderers, to Ukrainian freedom fighters, they were …

Hierarchical Data And The Derivational Relationship Between Words, Andrew R. Hippisley, Mariam Tariq, David Chang Jan 2001

Hierarchical Data And The Derivational Relationship Between Words, Andrew R. Hippisley, Mariam Tariq, David Chang

Linguistics Faculty Publications

Databases that are currently being developed for repositories of digital linguistic information typically fall into the strictly relational category. We present work on an object-relational database which allows for the representation of hierarchical relationships. This has particular benefits for the storage and access of morphological data in the system of word formation. A model that makes use of inheritance hierarchies elegantly captures the relationship between a root, its derivative, and its derivative, and so on. We report on the experimental Node DataBlade, a software bundle that extends the functionality of the object-relational database system Informix (Brown 2001) by supporting the …

The Articulation Of Shared Meaning In Information Systems Development (Case Study)., Christopher Davis Jan 2001

The Articulation Of Shared Meaning In Information Systems Development (Case Study)., Christopher Davis

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

This paper presents a case study showing how Repertory Grid Analysis (RGA) can be used to construct shared meaning during information systems development, implementation and use. RGA was used as one of the evidence gathering techniques during a multi-site interpretive study of the development and implementation of the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) in England and Wales. The case study demonstrates the capacity of such constructions to identify problems arising during and after implementation as information systems are assimilated into their organisational setting. Using participants' constructions of issues, concerns and values, the research demonstrates how the tendency for the …

Focus On Writing: Collaborative Action Research In The Classroom, Carol Marchel, Dianne Whitaker

Perspectives In Learning

In higher education, professors are expected to provide quality instruction, although rewards are often based on research activities. For those who value teaching for its own sake, it is difficult to balance the competing demands of life within academe with the demands of teaching. As teachers, we seek to understand student needs to improve our classroom practice. More importantly, we want to show students how to improve their own skills. This article describes how we combined both research and instruction to improve the quality of instruction while providing students with a way to improve their skills. We utilized this approach …
