A Psychographic Analysis Of Generation Y College Students, Joyce M. Wolburg, James Pokrywczynski

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Generation Y is regarded as the elusive new youth market, whose members are as resistant to advertising efforts as were members of Generation X before them. To investigate various factors that influence the use of advertising among the college segment of Generation Y, a survey was administered to a random sample of 368 college students. Questions probed self-identity, relevance of depictions in the media, and the informational value of advertising across eight media. Results show that gender and a variety of personality traits such as introversion/extroversion affect both the perceived value of advertising as an information source and the relevance …

Pain Control In Healthcare Organizations: Developing Effective Disease Management Programs, C. Richard Chapman, Stephen D. Lande, Bill H. Mccarberg, David B. Nash Sep 2001

Pain Control In Healthcare Organizations: Developing Effective Disease Management Programs, C. Richard Chapman, Stephen D. Lande, Bill H. Mccarberg, David B. Nash

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Although medicine possesses the knowledge and technology for preventing or relieving most pain, poor pain control is still widespread. Unrelieved pain causes unnecessary suffering and increases health care expenditures. Among the barriers to improving pain control are poor provider education in pain management, misguided beliefs about the inevitability of pain and the dangers of pain medication, provider resistance to changing practice patterns, and administrative resistance to implementing improvements that incur short-term costs but lead to long-term savings. In short, poor pain relief in America's health care institutions is a system issue, and improvement requires a system-wide change. An effective program …

How Best To Serve Seniors On Existing Transit Services, Mti Report 01-04, David Koffman

Mineta Transportation Institute

Increases in the size of the elderly population and changes in travel patterns are expected to create significant new mobility expectations. The research documented here is intended to provide tools for transit providers and public policy makers to make the greatest use of existing transit resources to serve mobility needs of the growing senior population. The research demonstrates how customer satisfaction surveys can be used to set priorities for improving existing fixed route services. The primary analysis technique used is the impact score technique. This method determines the relative impact of various improvements on overall customer satisfaction. It does this …

A Qualitative Investigation Into Developmental Relationships For Small Business Apparel Retailers: Networks, Mentors And Role Models, Luann R. Gaskill

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this investigation was to gain an understanding of the use, function, and support dimensions of developmental relationships for small business apparel retailers by applying focus group data collection techniques and interpretive analysis. Data collection took place through eight focus groups with small business owners/managers in six mid-western communities. Results indicate that, indeed, networks, role models, and mentors are viewed as necessary and important mechanisms for information, support, and guidance. However, focus group participants noted a lack of access to such developmental relationships. In terms of functions performed, having a business colleague to confide in, and relate to, …

Intermittent Noise Sampling And Control Strategies In The Hospital Environment, Rosarito M. Guerrero Aug 2001

Intermittent Noise Sampling And Control Strategies In The Hospital Environment, Rosarito M. Guerrero

Theses

Noise in the hospital environment can have negative effects on both patients and hospital staff. Unwanted noise can be disturbing and often annoying thus, interfering with patients' sleep and obstructing work performance of the hospital staff. A research study was conducted in the hospital unit to identify and develop methods of intervention for intermittent noise and their source. Routine staff work activity generated noise levels above EPA hospital noise recommendations. A sound level meter and video camera was used to capture noise between the work-shifts. The video camera captured digital readings generated by the sound level meter which, helped identify …

Encoding And Storage Components Of Verbal Working Memory As Revealed By A Factorial Design, An Fmri Study, Jason Steffener

Theses

In this fMRI study, the contributions of frontal and posterior brain regions to verbal working memory were investigated. A two-factor design with low and high memory load (2 and 5 letters) and short and long delay (4 and 12 secs.) as factors were used. Based on reports in the literature, we expect activity in the following frontal and parietal brain regions of interest (ROIs): Brodmann areas (BA) 6, 9, 46, 44, 45, 7 and 40. The analysis of collected flvM data involved image processing and statistical analysis methods including realignment, spatial normalization, spatial smoothing, temporal filtering, intensity normalization, statistical tests, …

A Hermeneutical Study: The Personal Meaning Of The Dying Experience Of Individuals With A Terminal Illness, Maurine E. Mccort

Theses and Graduate Projects

Most research in the study of dying has focused on the attitudes towards death, anxiety surrounding the dying experience, and bereavement. There is scant research done in examining the personal meaning of the dying process of persons with a terminal illness. This study employed the methodology of hermeneutics, a qualitative research design in the study of phenomenology using text. This study used the interpretation of the text from two 60-90 minute in-depth interviews with individuals with a terminal illness to create a deeper understanding of the personal meaning of dying. The findings indicate that the phenomena of dying are an …

Participating families were randomly assigned to conditions in which safety equipment either was or was not present during assessments of risk tolerance.

Results: Mothers who viewed the stimulus materials …
