Description Of Hakka, A New Genus Of Jumping Spider (Araneae, Salticidae) From Hawaii And East Asia, James W. Berry, Jerzy Prószyński

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

We describe a new genus for a jumping spider that was originally placed in the large genus Menemerus Simon 1868, from which the new genus is clearly different. They were later reclassified as Icius, then as Pseudicius, and still later as Salticus. These initial classifications were repeated by a number of authors. The distinctive features of the male, and somewhat ambiguous features of the female, do not fit any known genus; and this species is here assigned to the new genus Hakka.

Phospholipase D1 As A Regulator Of Morphogenesis In Candida Albicans, Carol Anne Baker Jan 2001

Phospholipase D1 As A Regulator Of Morphogenesis In Candida Albicans, Carol Anne Baker

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Phospholipase D (PLD) enzymes play significant roles in phospholipid metabolism, secretion, and lipid signal transduction. The yeast Candida albicans possesses a PLD activity that is designated PLD1. This enzyme has been implicated in the regulation of dimorphic transition. In vivo assays using sphinganine, propranolol, and staurosporine were used to test the importance of phosphatidic acid (PA) and diacylglycerol (DAG), two downstream products of PLDI activity. A concentration of 5 µM sphinganine was sufficient to decrease the appearance of germ tubes with no effect on culture doubling times. However, at higher concentrations sphinganine was inhibitory to cell growth. Propranolol concentrations up …

Using System Level Quality Measures To Improve Home And Community-Based Services In Maine, Julie T. Fralich Mba, Sue Nonemaker Rn, Ms

Disability & Aging

The purpose of this project was to identify a set of quality measures that could be used to profile the performance of Maine’s home and community based care (HCBS) system. The long term care system in Maine has been significantly restructured in the last five years. Funding for home care services has more than doubled and now represents approximately 20% of Medicaid and State funding for LTC. This has led to increased interest in assuring the quality of services that are being provided and developing ways to improve the delivery of services and outcomes for consumers.

Undegradable Intake Protein Supplementation Of Compensating, Grazing Steers, Kelly Creighton, Mark Ullerich, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2001

Undegradable Intake Protein Supplementation Of Compensating, Grazing Steers, Kelly Creighton, Mark Ullerich, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of previous winter gain on response to undegradable intake protein (UIP) supplementation during the summer grazing period. Steers wintered at the FAST rate of gain had a greater response to UIP supplementation than steers with SLOW rate of gain. Maximum response for FAST cattle occurred at 150 g/d of supplemental UIP, while SLOW cattle showed no response through 150 g/d. Forage DM intake was similar for FAST and SLOW cattle, therefore SLOW cattle consumed more as a percentage of body weight. Increased gains from UIP supplementation were not maintained during the finishing …

Leptin Activates Anorexigenic Pomc Neurons Through A Neural Network In The Arcuate Nucleus, Michael A. Cowley, James L. Smart, Marcelo Rubinstein, Marcelo G. Cerdan, Sabrina Diano, Tamas L. Horvath, Roger D. Cone, Malcolm J. Low

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

The administration of leptin to leptin-deficient humans, and the analogous Lepob/Lepob mice, effectively reduces hyperphagia and obesity. But common obesity is associated with elevated leptin, which suggests that obese humans are resistant to this adipocyte hormone. In addition to regulating long-term energy balance, leptin also rapidly affects neuronal activity. Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and neuropeptide-Y types of neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus7 are both principal sites of leptin receptor expression and the source of potent neuropeptide modulators, melanocortins and neuropeptide Y, which exert opposing effects on feeding and metabolism. These neurons are therefore ideal for characterizing leptin action and …

Psychosocial Correlates Of Eating Disorder Symptoms In A Young, Black, Female Sample., Nancy Lee Zucker Jan 2001

Psychosocial Correlates Of Eating Disorder Symptoms In A Young, Black, Female Sample., Nancy Lee Zucker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present investigation examined the psychosocial correlates of eating disorder symptoms among a young sample of Black female adolescents. Recent epidemiological investigations have documented higher rates of disordered eating in Black females than had previously been reported. Because of the high prevalence of these symptoms both in majority and in minority populations, many eating disorder researchers are promoting preventive strategies to stem further increases in symptom levels. To this end, several longitudinal investigations have been conducted to delineate the risk factors of disordered eating among White adolescent populations. However, Black adolescents have been minimally represented in these samples. Thus, there …

Parenting Practices As A Moderator Of Exposure To Community Violence., Nicole Francingues Lanclos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Numerous studies evidence that urban youth are exposed to epidemic proportions of community violence. Exposure to community violence has been associated with significant levels of distress including aggression, academic difficulties, anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Although it is clear that children who experience chronic levels of violence exposure are at increased risk for poor developmental outcome, the consequences of exposure are not the same for all children. Parenting factors found to buffer the effects of community violence exposure include family size, parental presence in the home, family support, parenting resources, family cohesion, and strong parental monitoring. It is less …

Abundance And Distribution Of Commensal Amphipods From Common Marine Sponges Of Southeast Florida, Stacie E. Crowe

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Marine sponges were examined from shallow waters of southeast Florida and the Florida Keys to determine species composition and distribution of commensal amphipod crustaceans from shallow reef, mangrove, and seagrass habitats. Twenty sponge species were investigated during this study, sixteen of which housed amphipods in the families Colomastigidae and/or Leucothoidae. Six species of commensal amphipods were identified. Leucothoe spinicarpa (Abildgaard) species "complex" was the most dominant amphipod commensal, representing 63% of the total amphipods collected. The L. spinicarpa "complex" contains four local morphotypes, which are diagnosed and briefly described. Common sponge hosts included Callyspongia vaginalis, Mycale sp., and Myriastra kallitetilla.

High Moisture And Dry-Rolled High-Oil Corn For Finishing Feedlot Steers, Wanda Cerkoney, Terry L. Mader, Fred Owens Jan 2001

High Moisture And Dry-Rolled High-Oil Corn For Finishing Feedlot Steers, Wanda Cerkoney, Terry L. Mader, Fred Owens

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Finishing steers fed diets containing dry-rolled high-oil corn had a 2.5% reduction in dry matter intake and 4.2% better feed efficiency than steers fed diets containing dry-rolled normal corn. Hot carcass weight, dressing percent, liver abscess score, rib fat thickness, marbling score and yield grade did not differ among treatments. Steers fed high-moisture high-oil corn had larger ribeye area and greater percent kidney, pelvic and heart fat than steers fed high moisture normal corn. No differences in performance or efficiency were detected from substituting high-oil high moisture corn for normal high moisture corn.
