Why Involve Students In Research?, Rodney A. Erickson Jan 2001

Why Involve Students In Research?, Rodney A. Erickson

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

This article addresses the benefits of undergraduate research to students, to faculty, and to universities. Research experiences are credited with increasing motivation for learning, helping undergraduate students decide on a career path, forming mentoring relationships between students and faculty, and improving student performance in writing, speaking, and working in teams. For many students, research experiences are their most memorable experiences as undergraduates. From the perspective of universities, students bring enthusiasm to research teams and often ask insightful questions-sometimes quite by accident-that can change the ways faculty approach research inquiries. Student researchers contribute to the world of knowledge. Research universities have …

The Relationship Between Receptive Vocabulary And Letter Recognition, James Bennett Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Receptive Vocabulary And Letter Recognition, James Bennett

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The West Virginia Educare Program has randomly chosen 150 children from 2 ½ to 5 years of age to participate in an academic readiness study. These children came from a 6 county pilot community program collaborative, including the counties of Cabell, Wayne, Monongalia, Roane, Upshur, Webster, and Summers. The Bracken-R, the PPVT-III, and Carolina Curriculum for Pre-Schoolers with special needs were used to assess all subjects. For this study, the letter recognition subset of the Bracken-R and the raw score of the PPVT-III were used to determine if a correlation exists between receptive vocabulary and letter recognition. This study found …

Separating The Impacts Of Crop Diversification And Rotations On Risk, Glenn A. Helmers, Charles F. Yamoah, Gary E. Varvel Jan 2001

Separating The Impacts Of Crop Diversification And Rotations On Risk, Glenn A. Helmers, Charles F. Yamoah, Gary E. Varvel

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

It has been commonly accepted that crop rotations reduce risk compared with monoculture systems. Quantifying this phenomenon requires that effects of yield stability on risk (positive or negative) arising from rotating crops be separated from other risk elements. Using an ARS–University of Nebraska series of yields for corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] grown over a 14-yr period, both in rotation and in monoculture, the impact of crop rotation on risk was isolated and estimated. Risk was defined as the failure to meet an annual per-hectare net return target. A corn–soybean rotation had significantly …

Host Nutritional Selenium Status As A Driving Force For Influenza Virus Mutations, Heather K. Nelson, Qing Shi, Peter Van Dael, Eduardo J. Schiffrin, Stephanie Blum, Denis Barclay, Orville A. Levander, Melinda A. Beck Jan 2001

Host Nutritional Selenium Status As A Driving Force For Influenza Virus Mutations, Heather K. Nelson, Qing Shi, Peter Van Dael, Eduardo J. Schiffrin, Stephanie Blum, Denis Barclay, Orville A. Levander, Melinda A. Beck

United States Public Health Resources

Previous work from our laboratory has demonstrated that infection with influenza A/Bangkok/1/79 (H3N2), a relatively mild strain of the virus, caused much more severe pneumonitis in selenium (Se)-deficient mice than in Se-adequate mice. Here we report that the increased virulence observed in the Se-deficient mice is due to mutations in the influenza virus genome, resulting in a more virulent genotype. Most of the mutations occurred in the gene for the M1 matrix protein, an internal protein that is thought to be relatively stable. A total of 29 nucleotide changes were observed in this gene, and all 29 changes were identical …

Implications Of Early Brain Development On Child Care, Troy Dunkley

Theses and Graduate Projects

The goal of my research is to put together a paper that goes into enough detail about early brain research to convince the reader that child care centers must improve their quality and then to give an assessment of how the public can support the necessary changes. This is a Literature Review of writings and research on early brain development early childhood education and the suggestions to improve child care center quality. These changes are intended to get child care quality moving in the right direction.

The new research suggests that early childhood is critical to a child's healthy development …

The Cooperative Approach: A Handbook For Elementary Physical Education Teachers Focusing On Cooperation Within The Pe Curriculum, Michael D. Johnson Jan 2001

The Cooperative Approach: A Handbook For Elementary Physical Education Teachers Focusing On Cooperation Within The Pe Curriculum, Michael D. Johnson

All Graduate Projects

After being transferred to teach physical education, I wanted to prepare myself by gaining some background knowledge on foundations, concepts, and objectives in physical education. I noticed a large transformation in recent years from curriculums focusing on competitive, self-defeating games, to an approach aimed at teaching skills, cooperation and teamwork. I compiled research on the history, goals and intent, and cooperation and teamwork in the physical education curriculum. I also compiled research on the national and state standards, and evaluation and grading in the physical education program. Based on the research, I created a handbook for physical education teachers. The …

Prevention Of Trafficking And The Care And Support Of Trafficked Persons In The Context Of An Emerging Hiv/Aids Epidemic In Nepal, Celine Daly

HIV and AIDS

This study is a collaborative effort between the Asia Foundation (Kathmandu) and the Horizons project of the Population Council (New Delhi) to document the current intervention models and community-based study of human trafficking in the context of an emerging HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nepal. To address the human rights component of trafficking, the three components of this study focus on the rights and needs of trafficked persons as well as those who are vulnerable to trafficking. An analysis and assessment of the effectiveness of laws, policies, and interventions in the apprehension, prosecution, and conviction of alleged traffickers is not included in …

Trafficking And Human Rights In Nepal: Community Perceptions And Policy And Program Responses, Celine Daly, Vaishali Sharma Mahendra, Pankaja Bhattarai, Nick Langton, Jyoti Sanghera, Catrin Evans, Ratna Kapur, Dill Ram Dahal, Siobhan Crowley

HIV and AIDS

In recent years, millions of women and girls have been trafficked across national borders and within countries. The trafficking problem is particularly acute in Nepal, one of the least developed countries in the world, with 42 percent of its citizens living below the poverty line. An estimated 5,000 to 7,000 girls are trafficked from Nepal to India and other neighboring countries every year, primarily for prostitution, and 200,000 Nepali girls and women are currently working in the sex industry in India. The occurrence of trafficking in Nepal is generally attributed to widespread poverty, low status of girls and women, and …

Hiv And Partner Violence: What Are The Implications For Voluntary Counseling And Testing?, Carolyn Knapp Jan 2001

Hiv And Partner Violence: What Are The Implications For Voluntary Counseling And Testing?, Carolyn Knapp

HIV and AIDS

Millions of women around the world face two great threats to their health and well-being: HIV/AIDS and violence by an intimate partner. One of the strongest associations between the two is the role that violence and the threat of violence play in limiting a woman’s ability to negotiate safer sex with a partner. A similar fear of violence also discourages women who receive HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) from telling partners about test results. This study explored the links between HIV infection, serostatus disclosure, and partner violence among women attending a VCT clinic in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Researchers …

Barbie Banished From The Small Screen: The Proposed European Ban On Children's Television Advertising, Janice H. Kang Jan 2001

Barbie Banished From The Small Screen: The Proposed European Ban On Children's Television Advertising, Janice H. Kang

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

This Comment first presents a brief history of European policy governing children's television advertising in Europe and lists the current regula-tions in the various EU member states, ranging from Britain's deferential guidelines to Sweden's draconian stance. The next two sections examine arguments both for and against the ban. Impassioned consumer advocates decry television advertising to children as preying upon young impressionable minds; indignant industry groups marshal arguments such as the increasing sophistication of children and the freedom of commercial speech. Finally, after forecasting a doubtful future for the proposed absolute ban on children's television across Europe, this Comment concludes that …

International Governance Through Trade Agreements: Patent Protection For Essential Medicines, Judy Rein Jan 2001

International Governance Through Trade Agreements: Patent Protection For Essential Medicines, Judy Rein

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

This paper examines the current conflicts surrounding the implementation of patent protection for pharmaceuticals. Part II outlines the specifics of trade agreements shaping the global intellectual property regime and the consequences for governments seeking to devise an essential drugs policy. Part III analyzes the process of obtaining consensus and compliance with patent protection rules through the negotiation and implementation of trade agreements, and the utilization of dispute settlement mechanisms. This section also examines the aggressive application of unilateral measures to induce adherence to levels of protection beyond those established at the multilateral and regional level. Part IV considers alternative approaches …
