Bentgrass Response To K Fertilization And K Release Rates From Eight Sand Rootzone Sources Used In Putting Green Construction., W. M. Dest, Karl Guillard Jan 2001

Bentgrass Response To K Fertilization And K Release Rates From Eight Sand Rootzone Sources Used In Putting Green Construction., W. M. Dest, Karl Guillard

Plant Science Articles

There is a lack of plant response to fertilizer K in some sandy soils even though routine soil tests for soil available K are shown to be low. This lack of plant response to K fertilizer application may be explained by K release from nonexchangeable forms. Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate (a) response of bentgrass (Agrostis palustris [Agrostis stolonifera var. palustris]) cv. Pencross grown in rootzones with different sand sources to K fertilizer application and (b) K release from nonexchangeable forms from the different sand sources as an index to K availability. Experimental variables in the greenhouse …

What's Missing In Honors Education: A Theory-Driven Approach, Cheryl L. Achterberg Jan 2001

What's Missing In Honors Education: A Theory-Driven Approach, Cheryl L. Achterberg

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

If honors education is to thrive and mature in the future, better informed and more systematic thinking should be used to design and implement honors programs. The purpose of this paper is to establish a case for theory-driven research and practice as a means to improve honors education. It identifies the goals of honors education and then reasons that honors education should incorporate theory in order to advance the field. Theory is identified as a set of inter-related concepts, definitions, and propositions that specify how and why a phenomenon occurs. The most important function of a theory in honors education.is …

Journal of Marine Research

In order to provide information about the export and the distribution of hydrothermal particulate material to the surrounding deep ocean, four moorings were deployed in the vicinity of the hydrothermal Rainbow vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 36°14′N, 2250 m depth). The first mooring was a sediment trap with a current meter deployed at 2 m from a chimney of the Rainbow vent field and 1.5 m above the bottom (a.b.) for 16 days. It represented the reference for the initial composition of particles produced by the vent. The total mean mass particle flux (6.9 g m-2 d-1) was …

Changes In Thermotolerance And Hsp70 Expression With Domestication In Drosophila Melanogaster, Robert A. Krebs, S. P. Roberts, B. R. Bettencourt, M. E. Feder Jan 2001

Changes In Thermotolerance And Hsp70 Expression With Domestication In Drosophila Melanogaster, Robert A. Krebs, S. P. Roberts, B. R. Bettencourt, M. E. Feder

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

To examine how the duration of laboratory domestication may affect Drosophila stocks used in studies of thermotolerance, we measured expression of the inducible heat-shock protein Hsp70 and survival after heat shock in D. melanogaster strains recently collected from nature and maintained in laboratory culture for up to 50 or more generations. After an initial increase in both Hsp70 expression and thermotolerance immediately after transfer to laboratory medium, both traits remained fairly constant over time and variation among strains persisted through laboratory domestication. Furthermore, variation in heat tolerance and Hsp70 expression did not correlate with the length of time populations evolved …

Analysis Of E. Coli Dna From Selected Source(S) Using Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis, Sheema Doshi Jan 2001

Analysis Of E. Coli Dna From Selected Source(S) Using Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis, Sheema Doshi

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The presence of fecal coliforms in surface waters is a public health issue throughout the United States and Canada. The presence of Escherichia coli (E. coli) indicates recent fecal contamination from either animal or human sources. To solve this growing problem one must identify the source(s) of such contamination by creating a database of DNA profiles of£. coli isolates. Hence, tracking the source(s) of E. coli can help link water contamination to animal source(s) of contamination. In this study, pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to analyze DNA from E. coli isolates from known animals. For PFGE, the bacterial …

The Ability Of Cryotherapy To Effect Vertical Jump And Single-Legged Hop Test, Douglas W. Branch Jan 2001

The Ability Of Cryotherapy To Effect Vertical Jump And Single-Legged Hop Test, Douglas W. Branch

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Cryotherapy is an important component in the management and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries that occur due to sports participation. Cryotherapy is described as the "therapeutic application of any substance to the body which results in the withdrawal of heat from the body" (Tsang, 1997). This cold modality is used initially when caring for injuries that are acute or chronic. The main reason for using cryotherapy in acute injury management is to lower the temperature of the injured tissue, which reduces the metabolic rate and helps the tissue to survive the period of hypoxia following an injury (Merrick, 1993). The effects …

Humanitarian Health Education Programming: Diffusion Of Health Messages Through Folk Media, Archana Daya Shankar Jan 2001

Humanitarian Health Education Programming: Diffusion Of Health Messages Through Folk Media, Archana Daya Shankar

International Journal of Global Health

For several decades, numerous health programs for the underserved have been launched in rural areas of developing countries. World organization, NGO's and government agencies have been allocating a significant portion of their budgets for developing health education programs for underserved population in different parts of the world. The success rate of reaching the goals of these programs has been very slow. For example, in India experience in rural health development has clearly indicated that isolated urban health programs do not provide appropriate assistance to the underserved sections of society (Hedge, 1997).
