Health Assessment Of Bosnian Refugees In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Clementine Mukeshimana
International Journal of Global Health
This study examined the public health status of the Bosnian refugees in Black Hawk County Health, Iowa. A random sample of 557 Bosnian medical records was selected from People's Community Health Clinic. Virtually all Bosnians seek health care at People's Community Health Clinic in Waterloo. High rates of smoking behaviors and dental health problems were the most common health concerns among this group. The Bosnians refugees had rather low hypertension rates, low use of alcohol, healthy weight and a health diet, and low history of cardiovascular diseases.

The Potential For Spread Of Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Via Commercial Sweet Cherry Fruit: A Critical Review And Risk Assessment, C. H. Wearing, J. D. Hansen, C. Whyte, C. E. Miller, J. Brown
USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory
The identity, geographical distribution, and host range of codling moth is reviewed, and the evidence for sweet cherry being a host is critically analyzed. A model is described which assesses the risk of codling moth being spread through international trade in sweet cherries, as exemplified by exports from, respectively, New Zealand and USA to Japan in winter and summer. The model is based on the recorded incidence of codling moth in cherries and its estimated probability of survival during storage, transport to, and arrival in Japan, using data from specific studies and from wider knowledge of the phenology, life history, …

Graduate Skills Assessment. Summary Report, The Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer
Higher education research
n 1999 the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) was commissioned by the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) to develop a test of generic skills which could be administered at university entry and exit level. Following consultation with university representatives and other stakeholders, written communication, critical thinking, problem solving and interpersonal understandings were selected as the components of the initial Graduate Skills Assessment (GSA).

Transformations
Scholars' Day was established in 1997 and is a day-long conference devoted to showcasing the wide array of scholarship, research and creative activities occurring on campus. In 2012, a new emphasis on student research lead to a name change to Transformations: A Student Research and Creativity Conference. This event focuses on student research, which is defined as an original investigation or creative activity through the primary efforts of a student or group of students. The work should show problem-solving skills and demonstrate new conceptual outcomes.

Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga
This chapter has several main purposes. One is to provide a contemporary image of the peasant production system at San José Llanga (SJL) from 1992 to 1995, the years of our field research. Another purpose is to provide a framework of the historical processes that have influenced local society in this century. We wanted to know about standards of living, diets and food security, income and expenditure patterns, gender roles and aspirations of the people. We wanted to know about population dynamics, community leadership, resource tenure and off-farm activities. We wanted information on the types of crops and livestock produced …

The Development Of Fisheries In Greenland, With Focus On Paamiut/Frederikshåb And Sisimiut/Holsteinsborg, Rasmus Ole Rasmussen, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Sociology
Situated along a mountainous coastline between cold seas and continental ice, Greenland’s human populations face severe environmental constraints. Both individual and cultural survival have always depended upon flexible use of the available resources and, when these fail, relocation. The 20th century saw great transitions, notably from Danish colonial to Greenlandic Home Rule government; an almost fivefold increase in population (from 12,000 to 56,000); and from a seal-hunting subsistence economy to commercial fisheries in a new global marketplace. But throughout these transitions, the economy remained tied to renewable resources, and therefore could not transcend the underlying environmental constraints. Greenland’s 20th century …

Enhancing Rural Sustainability Project Status Report
Enhancing Rural Sustainability Project Status Report
University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
For the past year, the PPC has been working to identify a small list of key issues related to enhancing rural sustainability that would benefit from University research, with special attention paid to research activities already underway or in the planning process at the University. We also have been considering procedural options to determine the best way to facilitate the research to be conducted.

Financing And Payment Issues In Rural Long-Term Care Integration [Working Paper], Paul Saucier Ma, Julie T. Fralich Mba
Disability & Aging
Federal and state policy makers, consumers, health plans, providers, and other stakeholders are interested in the benefits and disadvantages of integrating acute and long term care financing in rural areas. To date, experience with integrated financing is limited and is based largely in urban areas. This paper reviews current research and experience and identifies key policy and program considerations for integrated financing in rural areas.

Market Opportunities And Threats To The U.S. Pork Industry Posed By Traceability Systems, Sterling Liddell, Deevon Bailey
Market Opportunities And Threats To The U.S. Pork Industry Posed By Traceability Systems, Sterling Liddell, Deevon Bailey
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This paper demonstrates that the U.S. pork industry is lagging its principal international competitors and major international customers in terms of developing programs for traceability, transparency, and assurance (TTA). The primary areas of weakness in U.S. TTA programs are at the producer level and in the area of providing consumers quality assurance regarding inputs used in producing pork products. We conclude that the U.S. pork industry may diminish its competitive advantage in world pork markets if it fails to enhance its TT A programs.

Determinants Of Life Expectancies In U.S. Counties, L. Dwight Israelsen, Ryan D. Israelsen, Karl E. Israelsen
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
There is a large variability in both female and male life expectancies by county in the U.S. We develop and test a model of the impact of demographic, economic, educational, social, and geographic factors on mean life expectancy by county for males and females born in 1990 . We find that the percentage of population on rural farms, the percentage of married households, the level of education, the percentage speaking a language other than English at home, the percentage foreign-born, and county elevation have significant positive effects on life expectancy for both males and females; while the percentage of population …

Ethnic Differences In Risk From Mercury Among Savannah River Fishermen, Joanna Burger, Karen F. Gaines, Michael Gochfeld
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Fishing plays an important role in people's lives and contaminant levels in fish are a public health concern. Many states have issued consumption advisories; South Carolina and Georgia have issued them for the Savannah River based on mercury and radionuclide levels. This study examined ethnic differences in risk from mercury exposure among people consuming fish from the Savannah River, based on site-specific consumption patterns and analysis of mercury in fish. Among fish, there were significant interspecies differences in mercury levels, and there were ethnic differences in consumption patterns. Two methods of examining risk are presented: (1) Hazard Index (HI), and …

Oviposition, Development, And Feeding Of Scymnus (Neopullus) Sinuanodulus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae): A Predator Of Adelges Tsugae (Homoptera: Adelgidae), Wenhua Lu, Michael E. Montgomery
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand, is a major threat to hemlocks in the eastern United States. As part of efforts to control this pest, Scymnus (Neopullus) sinuanodulus Yu et Yao, a potential predator, was collected from hemlocks in Yunnan, China. Three shipments were imported during 1996 and 1997 to a quarantine laboratory to study the beetle’s biology. Beetles began oviposition immediately after transferal from 5°C in the spring, ceased oviposition by June, and laid the same number of eggs, whether egg laying began in February or in April. Two-year-old beetles laid as many eggs per year …
