An emerging topic in plant biology is whether plants display analogous elements of mammalian programmed cell death during development and defense against pathogen attack. In many plant– pathogen interactions, plant cell death occurs in both susceptible and resistant host responses. For example, specific recognition responses in plants trigger formation of the hypersensitive response and activation of host defense mechanisms, resulting in restriction of pathogen growth and disease development. Several studies indicate that cell death during hypersensitive response involves activation of a plant-encoded pathway for cell death. Many susceptible interactions also result in host cell death, although it is not clear …

Presently, worldwide, more than 800 million people are hungry and over one billion are desperately poor, and food demand is increasing rapidly. The majority of poor live in rural areas in developing countries and agricultural and food systems development is vital to economic growth; improving environmental quality; strengthening nutrition, health and child survival; improving the status of women; and promoting democratization. It is estimated that, between 1980 and 2030, the population ofow- and middle-income countries will more than double-to seven billion, compared with one billion for high-income countries. The purpose of this project was to develop a handbook to assist secondary health teachers in providing a tool to develop healthy body image, through health promotion. Many health teachers are left with few resources to teach healthy body image. Through the review ofliterature, the writer presented the definition of healthy body image, the history behind eating disorders, the physiological/psychological effects of eating disorders, as well as the benefits of implementing a Healthy Body Image-Health Promotion handbook. This handbook should be a significant aid to secondary health teachers, and others who have an interest in helping adolescents understand eating disorders …

Teachers have the responsibility to create partnerships between school and home by establishing and incorporating parent involvement activities in their classroom. The purpose of this project was to design and create for elementary teachers a set of activities and guidelines which encouraged "Parent-Teacher Partnerships." The activities and guidelines provide a resource for teachers to assist them in actively involving parents in the education of their children.

Gulf of Mexico Science

Mellita tenuis were collected from six locations along the Florida gulf coast from March 1997 through Sep. 1998. The anterior-posterior length of the test was measured, and growth lines in the interambulacral plates near the ambitus on the aboral surface (which are oldest) were counted. The number of growth lines is size independent as would be expected if seasonality of growth and growth rate were uncoupled. However, a collection of small individuals had many more growth lines and one of the large individuals had many less than would be anticipated. Lines near the ambitus are difficult to count because they …

Fluid dynamics has been shown to alter ecologically important behaviors of aquatic organisms orienting to distant chemical sources. Because the fluid dynamics and chemical plumes change across hydraulic environments, it is unclear which of these factors influence orientation behavior more. This study examined how alterations in chemical signal structure, through changes in source spatial arrangement, affect chemically mediated search behavior. Microelectrochemical measurements of tracer molecules revealed that source arrangement significantly alters the downstream fine-scale structure of chemical plumes. Flume hydrodynamic characterizations (as measured with laser Doppler velocimetry) also differed among source arrangements; however, differences were minor and existed only at …
