Accumulated Response In Live Improvised Dance Performance, Joanna T. Pollitt Jan 2001

Accumulated Response In Live Improvised Dance Performance, Joanna T. Pollitt

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The response project and accompanying thesis aim to affirm the role of the dancer as an authority in revealing patterns and traces of accumulated lived experience, knowledge and ideas through the practice and performance of dance improvisation. The dancing body is investigated as a dynamical and complex system of research that is embedded in a process of continual response to the present. These bodily inscriptions and the process of active response form the seminal grounds for the physical and energetic exchange of improvised dance in performance.

Trace And The Makers Of Meaning, Lindon J. Thompson Jan 2001

Trace And The Makers Of Meaning, Lindon J. Thompson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

One of the greatest accessible records of trace and the past is the landscape, which over time acts as a repository of evidence from natural forces and things that humans have created or changed. This thesis considers trace as material and nonmaterial evidence, remnants, marks, vestiges of events past and forgotten or remembered. How can a past that is evidenced only by its traces be read within a landscape context by disciplines of knowledge production? The subsequent interpretation, generation of meaning and understanding of traces contributes to the knowledge, mythology and perceptions of reality for differing groups in different places. …

A Critical Linguistic Analysis Of A Popular Comic Genre In Japan, Angela Rawson Jan 2001

A Critical Linguistic Analysis Of A Popular Comic Genre In Japan, Angela Rawson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research will focus on the issue of power and gender in the language of Japanese comics (manga). Comics in Japan are enormously popular and are read by a wide audience. They are aimed at specific audiences and it is my argument that the language of manga helps to reinforce certain social stereotypes - particularly the inferiority of women and the dominance of males. The language of children's manga will be analyzed using the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which concerns itself with the relation between ideology and power in discourse. The analysis will be at various levels including …

The Effect Of Cycling On Muscle Activation In The Running Leg Of An Olympic Distance Triathlon, Tamika Heiden Jan 2001

The Effect Of Cycling On Muscle Activation In The Running Leg Of An Olympic Distance Triathlon, Tamika Heiden

Theses : Honours

Anecdotal reports from triathletes highlight the transition from cycling to running as the most difficult due to the change from non-weight carrying cycling activity to weight hearing running activity. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of prior cycling on activation of lower limb muscles in running during an Olympic distance triathlon. Ten elite level triathletes underwent two conditions; a 40krn ride followed by a 2km run and a 10km run followed by a 2km run, at their Olympic distance race pace. Testing was carried out in the field with at least one week between tests. EMG …

Documentary Photography/Postmodern Commodities, Allan Radich Jan 2001

Documentary Photography/Postmodern Commodities, Allan Radich

Theses : Honours

This honours project is divided into two parts. Part one is the written thesis. Part two is the photographic component. Part one discusses some of the practices and discourses associated with 'documentary' photography. Some documentary practices and discourses of the past can be seen to be culturally divisive. These practices and discourses were based on being, white, male and European. This ideology and its discursive modes are in conflict with contemporary photographic practices and the relevant social and cultural theories that define it. The thesis defines the discourses and practices of the modernist and postmodernist documentary photographer. It highlights the …

Indoor Radio Channel Of Bluetooth Technology, Kai Hock Charlie Khoo Jan 2001

Indoor Radio Channel Of Bluetooth Technology, Kai Hock Charlie Khoo

Theses : Honours

This thesis discusses the findings of the final year project involving the characterisation of indoor radio channel specified by Bluetooth technology through theoretical analysis, simulations and actual measurements through field experiments. The concepts of indoor radio propagation effects and its statistical models arc explored. In addition, Bluetooth specifications are also studied and presented in Section 1. These provided a clear understanding of the radio propagation behaviour inside a building and the radio performance of Bluetooth specifications. Profound understanding of the propagation characteristics of the indoor radio channel is a major requirement for successful design of any indoor wireless communication systems. …

Theses : Honours

This study was conducted to find out what features of interactive multimedia elements best engage children between the ages of 8 and 12 in the process of learning music theory. Previous research into similar areas has indicated that multimedia technologies, such as CD-ROM, arc advantageous in teaching musical theory. A commercially available software application, Musicolour, that uses multimedia delivery of musical theory lessons, was analysed to identify the elements that the students found motivating. These features included the use of a combination of audio cues, graphical cues and interactivity. The findings were analysed to determine which multimedia elements or combination …

A Cable/Wireless Modulation/Demodulation Frontend Module For High Speed/Broadband Datalink, Pay Peng Clarice Chong Jan 2001

A Cable/Wireless Modulation/Demodulation Frontend Module For High Speed/Broadband Datalink, Pay Peng Clarice Chong

Theses : Honours

What are the modulation/demodulation schemes that are suitable tor cable or wireless high speed or broadband data link, between 1 Mbps to 30 Mbps? The recent adoption of modulation schemes such as OFDM, 8-VSB, OAM, for Digital Television broadcast (DTV), Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Lines (ADSL), and Cable Modem (CM) for Internet access, is poss'1ble because of the increase bit/Hz in these modulations over conventional modulation schemes. These modulation/demodulation schemes could also offer similar advantages to dedicated data link applications such as home-networking using cable or wireless medium. This report document the project implementation of Quadrature Amplitude Modulation as the modulation …

The Next Stage Of Forfeiture Reform, Eric D. Blumenson, Eva Nilsen Jan 2001

The Next Stage Of Forfeiture Reform, Eric D. Blumenson, Eva Nilsen

Faculty Scholarship

In passing the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 2000, Congress instituted some badly needed reforms to a system that had spawned a good deal of governmental abuse, media investigation, and popular outrage. Unfortunately, however, CAFRA does not address the aspect of asset forfeiture law that is perhaps most responsible for fueling overzealous, sometimes lawless use of the forfeiture power: federal forfeiture law continues to authorize law enforcement agencies to retain the drug-related assets they seize for their own use, and many state laws do as well. With facilities, cruisers, computer and other equipment, salaries and positions sometimes dependent on …

Robust Ideals, Kelli Damron Jan 2001

Robust Ideals, Kelli Damron

Theses

Recent American pop culture has played a major role in portraying the voluptuous female as unhealthy and unattractive; it has recreated an idea of beauty that is an extreme opposite of the ideals of the past. Through my thesis work I would like to offer another option to the emaciated female figure that is propagated by American society today. The amply proportioned woman as an object of beauty has been represented in art from the beginning of humankind. She has been painted, carved, sculpted, and modeled by the earliest known inhabitants of this planet. She has been exalted in works …

Rhodium Trichloride Promoted Hydroboration Of Alenyl Nitriles And Alkenyl Chlorides, Anvar Buranov Jan 2001

Rhodium Trichloride Promoted Hydroboration Of Alenyl Nitriles And Alkenyl Chlorides, Anvar Buranov

Theses

Previous studies of the rhodium trichloride (RhCl3) catalyzed hydroboration mechanisms of alkenes showed rearrangements and unusual regiochemistry compared to simple uncatalyzed hydroboration, and complex mechanisms have been proposed to explain these results. Earlier studies suggested that isomerization of alkenes in the presence of RI1CI3 prior to hydroboration accounted for these results. Studies of alkene rearrangements in the presence of RI1CI3 also suggest that the results are due to a different mechanism. The elimination-addition promoted elimination of R-Rh-B structures was shown to be responsible for isomerization and formation of different alcohol isomers after hydroboration. These interesting results prompted us to study …

Post-Test Implementation Of Twntn4a Correction Code At O.3m Tct, Ryuichi Machida Jan 2001

Post-Test Implementation Of Twntn4a Correction Code At O.3m Tct, Ryuichi Machida

Theses

Airfoil characteristics measured in a wind tunnel typically differ from those obtained in free air due to the confinement of airflow in tunnel test sections and the development of boundary layer on tunnel walls. Wind tunnel measured quantities, e.g. Mach number, Reynolds number, angle of attack, require corrections to determine their equivalent values in free air. TWNTN4A is a correction program capable of correcting wall interference effects in 2-D wind tunnels. TWNTN4A was applied to correct over 300 data files obtained from tests performed in 0.3m Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel (TCT) at NASA Langley. Data describe Mach number range of 0.50 …

Mediation In Practice: Common Law And Civil Law Perspectives Compared, Nadja Alexander Jan 2001

Mediation In Practice: Common Law And Civil Law Perspectives Compared, Nadja Alexander

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Australian mediation practice is thriving. Effective forms of mediation are practised in court-connected schemes, in the public sector, in the community justice sector and in the private business sector. Indeed, no industry is excluded from the application of mediation. In contrast, Hoffmann-Riem laments that despite many years of discussions about ADR (alternative dispute resolution) in Germany, mediation plays a marginal role only. Further, Labes states that 'ADR mechanisms are relatively obscure methods in Germany.' The comparison between Australia and Germany is particularly interesting because it considers both a common law and a civil law tradition. This essay will discuss the …

Regulation Of Religious Proselytism In The United States, Howard Hunter, Polly J. Price Jan 2001

Regulation Of Religious Proselytism In The United States, Howard Hunter, Polly J. Price

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Howard Hunter and Polly Price examine the components of the US legal system that affect proselytism, focusing on the contradictions between the constitutional protection of religious freedom and legal constraints on proselytism. Hunter and Price comprehensively review the regulation of proselytism in both public and private spaces in the United States, analyze the justifications for these regulations, and suggest probable future issues of debate regarding religious freedom. Additionally, Hunter and Price argue that the regulation of proselytism has led to a failure to protect religious minorities, and in some cases contributed to their persecution.

The Social Construction Of Fatherhood, Helen Le Gresley Jan 2001

The Social Construction Of Fatherhood, Helen Le Gresley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The present research sought to explore the lived experience of fatherhood guided by a social constructionist perspective and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological framework (1977, 1989), by collaborating with seven Western Australian fathers on a series of multiple case conversational interviews. To ensure that the data generated from the interviews was manageable and the aims and objectives of research could be effectively facilitated by the researcher, only those fathers belonging to specific cohort, that is, fathers in an intact heterosexual, defacto or marital relationship, were sampled. The interviews were transcribed and a qualitative thematic analysis was conducted on the data. The multiple case …

A Socio-Historical Study Of The Construction Of Knowledge In Secondary Media Education In Western Australia - Whose Knowledge?, Robyn Quin Jan 2001

A Socio-Historical Study Of The Construction Of Knowledge In Secondary Media Education In Western Australia - Whose Knowledge?, Robyn Quin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis investigates the history of the construction of knowledge in the school subject media studies using the Western Australian experience as the case for the study. It seeks to explain why the subject media studies looks and sounds the way it does today through the production of a genealogy of the subject. The problems addressed are first, why was this subject introduced into the curriculum in the 1970s. Secondly, how has the knowledge in the subject been defined and contested, how and why has it changed in the course of the subject’s history. Thirdly, which knowledge attains the status …

Imagineering The Community: The Vagrant Spaces Of The Malls, Enclave Estates, The Filmic And The Televisual, Dennis Wood Jan 2001

Imagineering The Community: The Vagrant Spaces Of The Malls, Enclave Estates, The Filmic And The Televisual, Dennis Wood

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The idea of 'community' is an all pervasive and persuasive notion within society. But it is an elastic concept used by diverse groups and institutions to rally people to a cause or to reassure the public in times of (perceived) calamity. Of late the various forms of the media and certain elements of society have been focussing their attention on the 'breakdown of community' values citing the (perceived) rise in crime, the (supposed) fragmentation of the family and the (hypothetical) loss of respect for authority and authority figures as contributing to an ailing communal sensibility. However, as Anderson (1983) has …

Privacy On The Internet : Investigation Into Corporate Privacy Policy Of Australian Large Private Sector Organisations On The Internet, Keiko Sato Jan 2001

Privacy On The Internet : Investigation Into Corporate Privacy Policy Of Australian Large Private Sector Organisations On The Internet, Keiko Sato

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The popularity of the Internet has been dramatically increased over recent years. The rapid growth of this technology and its international use has made it almost impossible to regulate the internet. As a result, the Internet has certainly provided freedoms to people and it has led to some abusing systems. Privacy is one of the major issues in the development of Electronic Commerce using the Internet. As an enormous amount of personal information is transmitted to several hosts connecting to the Internet, the information can be accessed by both authorised and unauthorised people. Although it is certain that there are …

Principles In Public Reasoning About Criminal Justice : Victim Vulnerability, Trust, And Offender Status, Dianne R. Mckillop Jan 2001

Principles In Public Reasoning About Criminal Justice : Victim Vulnerability, Trust, And Offender Status, Dianne R. Mckillop

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

It is popularly assumed that the public is highly punitive toward criminal offenders and that its reasoning about criminal offences is emotionally and morally based. This assumption has been challenged by social scientists who cite influences of news media and methodological flaws in empirical studies as contributing causes. Public sentiment is a basis for law and the increasing responsiveness of legislator to what is perceived to be public opinion on crime means that accurate information on enduring principles in the public's intuitive reasoning about criminal justice is vital. An initial exploratory study (N = 34) presented members of the public …

History, Culture And Alcohol: Drinking Patterns In Poland And Australia, Barbara Wolska Jan 2001

History, Culture And Alcohol: Drinking Patterns In Poland And Australia, Barbara Wolska

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

It is a widely held view in Poland that for centuries those in power have promoted heavy drinking among their subjects in order to achieve their various goals and that this contributed to the development of Polish drinking patterns. There is some empirical evidence that the political economy of alcohol in Poland promoted heavy drinking among the Polish population. Drinking alcohol in Poland was an important aspect of social situations. The most popular beverage was vodka(s). Social pressure to drink in the extreme was attributed to the tradition of hospitality. Cultural norms encouraged very heavy drinking among men and imposed …

John Smith: A Charismatic And Transformational Religious Leader, Philip B. Muston Jan 2001

John Smith: A Charismatic And Transformational Religious Leader, Philip B. Muston

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

John Smith is best known as the charismatic leader and president of God's Squad Motorcycle Club, which seeks to proclaim and incarnate the Christian gospel in Australian outlaw motorcycle subculture. Smith is in fact an evangelist and public figure in his own right. As well he is a teacher and social commentator whose prophetic statements and interpretation of events had an impact in his own culture and abroad. He is also a media spokesman and unofficial 'priest' for thousands who feel themselves alienated from institutional expressions of Christianity, and the pioneering founder of alternative church congregations. This biographical and theoretical …
