Creating Non-Representational Art By Students Who Are Severely Intellectually Disabled Through A Pictorial And Musical Program, Jane Riddoch
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The main purpose of this research study was to investigate the worth of a recently developed Pictorial and Musical art program for severely intellectually disabled students, and to compare the non-representational art work produced by lower primary students in a special education school to similar art work being produced by lower primary students in a regular school, when taught in the same program. A subsidiary purpose of the study was to investigate teacher reactions in the art classroom of each participating school, and to observe the extent of the Pictorial and Musical program interventions on the students' attitudes and production …

This study was conducted in the northern metropolitan teaching districts of Perth, Western Australia. Using both quantitative and qualitative methodology, 22 early childhood teachers completed a survey involving open-ended questions, followed …
Monday Morning And The Millennium : Cultural Studies, Scepticism And The Concept Of Power, Mark Gibson
Monday Morning And The Millennium : Cultural Studies, Scepticism And The Concept Of Power, Mark Gibson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The thesis examines the use or the concept of power in cultural studies, offering a revisionist perspective on the history or this use. The dominant approach to questions or power in the field, it is argued, is a 'rationalist' one: the various phenomena comprehended under the concept are conceived ultimately as instances or the one phenomenon. This approach implies that positions in relation to power share a common referent allowing them to be assessed according to general criteria of 'correctness' or theoretical adequacy. It also allows developments in debates around power to be represented in terms or a narrative or …
To Release Or Not To Release That Is The Question: A Phenomenological Study Of Western Australian Government Freedom Of Information Coordinators, Graham Harnwell
To Release Or Not To Release That Is The Question: A Phenomenological Study Of Western Australian Government Freedom Of Information Coordinators, Graham Harnwell
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study explores the issues that impact on Western Australian State Government Freedom of Information Coordinators who, within the framework of the Freedom of Information Act (1992), manage requests from the public to access agency held documents. A literature review identified two bodies of material. One extolling FOI, the other arguing that some agency personnel have not accepted, and are actively resisting, the concept of FOI. Using a phenomenological approach, eight Coordinators narrated the issues that impact on their roles and decision-making processes. Themes were identified, analysed and reported in the context of the broader FOI environment. This research found …

Sentencing Decisions : The Public View Of The Effects Of Consequences Of Crime, Offender Remorse And Type Of Crime, Jodie S. Wright
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The Australian justice system is based in a conventional model of justice with the aim of uniformity in sentencing. It is important to ascertain public opinion on the relevance of different factors to be taken into account at sentencing as accurately as possible, in order to provide informed public opinion which may assist policy makers in making legislation or educating the public on these matters. The current study examined the impact of varying levels of victim harm (high or low) and offender remorse (high or low) for both person and property crimes on sentencing decisions made by both male (n …

Internet Content Control In Australia : Data Topology, Topography And The Data Deficit, David Harte
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The success of the online adult industry has provoked a public policy controversy over the need for internet censorship, and in recent times there has emerged desire to protect minors from possibly unsuitable content. On January 1st 2000, the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Online Services) Act (Cwlth, 1999) (BSA) was proclaimed. The Act purports to regulate and control Internet content in Australia. Operating in tandem with the Act is the Internet Industry Association Code of Practice, giving Australia a co-regulatory approach to Internet content control. The Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) is charged with implementing the regime. This study sets out examine …

Molecular Genetic Investigation Of Autosomal Dominant Muscular Dystrophy, Christopher Meredith
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis contributes to the Human Genome Project by adding detail to the physical and genetic maps of the human genome, and by identifying a strong candidate gene for a form of distal myopathy. Genomic clones for the human skeletal muscle genes slow troponin (TNN/1), alpha actin (ACTA1), and (3-tropomyosin (TPM2) were isolated for use in the fluorescent in situ hybridisation localisation of these genes on the cytogenetic map of the human genome. The localisation of these genes made them potential candidates for inherited skeletal muscle diseases, including the muscular dystrophies investigated here. Microsatellite, VNTR and RFLP markers were used …
To What Extent Can Knowledge Management Systems Build And Reinforce Consensus Around Initiatives For Change?: A Self-Reflective Analysis Of Professional Practice, Guy A. Duczynski
To What Extent Can Knowledge Management Systems Build And Reinforce Consensus Around Initiatives For Change?: A Self-Reflective Analysis Of Professional Practice, Guy A. Duczynski
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis reports on my attempts to 're-align' the purpose, behaviour and underlying culture of a large military organisation through heuristic, self reflective enquiry - to 'find its future' - with and through its people. I use the word re-align with great care as I recognised that change would have been too ambitious and would (probably have) result(ed) in failure. Whilst I cannot claim total success, I have made new and valuable discoveries in knowledge elicitation and methods of integrating the views of a large number of people to 'build and reinforce consensus around initiatives for change'. In the process …

Communicative Interaction In The English Language Classroom : A Field Study Of A Western Teacher As Change Agent In Two Chinese Primary Schools In Zhong Shan, People's Republic Of China, Monika Trittibach-Andres
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of a 'Change Agent' in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Chinese primary schools, and to determine whether changes were perceivable in the number and type of communicative interactions that occurred in EFL classrooms. The Department of Education of Zhong Shan, People's Republic of China, welcomed this research as the communicative approach to teaching English is sanctioned by the authorities. However, the formality of the actual classroom in primary schools often precludes much use of this method. An Investigation of the influence of a Westerner in the role …
In Search Of A Conceptualisation Of The Term 'Community' In Metropolitan Perth, Andria W. Green
In Search Of A Conceptualisation Of The Term 'Community' In Metropolitan Perth, Andria W. Green
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Communities arc dynamic, historically determined, and complex, and the topic itself has concerned social scientists for some time (Durkhcim, 1964, Weisenfeld, 1996). However, there has been an intrinsic problem in previous research arising from the ambiguity of the concept of the term 'community' itself, specifically the contradictions concerning its essential meaning. The aim of this study was to determine whether there are other ways of thinking about community without taking on any unwanted connotations of previous conceptualisations from past research. The research was based on the social constructivist paradigm and qualitative methodology was employed. Conceptualisations of the term community were …

A Journey Into Self-Actualization, William Rubar
A Journey Into Self-Actualization, William Rubar
Theses
The MFA Thesis Exhibition is a presentation of ceramic sculpture. The theme for this body of work is a self-portrait that uses text as an integral part of the composition. The medium is clay, which interacts with the two-dimensional and three-dimensional properties of space. Therefore, it is my goal to establish a union with these dimensional properties. My tablet paintings serve to catalog significant events affecting both our culture and my life, resulting in a self-portrait. These paintings create a dialogue between the emotion of language, passage of time and the properties of space. The preparation of the clay and …

Environmental Supply Chain Management Integration Into The Purchase Of Finished Electrical Products, Cavan Kelsey
Theses
Representatives from the electronics equipment industry were surveyed and selected companies were interviewed to determine the current level of environmental supply chain integration into the purchase of finished electrical products. Based on the information gathered, a summary of best practices was defined which included insights into effective buyer/supplier relationships and establishing environmental product requirements. As electronic equipment manufacturers change from a vertically integrated marketing structure to one of a horizontal supply chain, there is an increasing need to outsource manufacturing of or to procure finished products made by another supplier and subsequently branded by the buying manufacturer. The manufacturer's environmental …

Identification End Evaluation Of Packaging Design For Internet Kiosk Depending On Feasible On-Site Service Support Level, Nedeljko Medvedec
Theses
The Internet Kiosks are fast emerging telecommunication products that have a main function to enable "public mobility". The estimated market size in 2000 is 2,4 Billion US$ worldwide, with prognoses to grow in next 3 years to the level of 7 Billion US$. One of the features offered to the market is "plug and play" capability, but due to the size and weight of the kiosks, this should be conditionally treated. Some portion of on-site service support at the installation should be considered, the amount of which depends on applied product design and package design solution. Product design and package …
Regulatory Distortions Of Local Exchange Telecommunications Infrastructure, Gregg Sayre
Regulatory Distortions Of Local Exchange Telecommunications Infrastructure, Gregg Sayre
Theses
This thesis presents a history of United States telecommunications regulation in the 20th Century with a view toward explaining the economic motivations of the involved parties and exploding economic myths such as "natural monopoly" and "cross subsidization" by the application of common sense. The relative success and failure of antitrust and economic regulation are analyzed on a subjective but quantitative scale, with antitrust regulation as the clear winner in terms of the author's standard of "public interest." The thesis examines specific economic incentives resulting directly from economic regulation, in particular, rate-of- return regulation and the FCC's interpretations of the Telecommunications …

Segmented Face Detection Using Clustering, Gunturi Srimanth
Theses
Perception forms a very important part of learning. The way we perceive things has a lot to do with how we understand. It forms a very crucial link in our build-up of knowledge. Living organisms have a remarkable ability of understanding spatial information. It is due to their inherent ability of generating native organizations, models, etc, and most importantly, their ability to generalize and infer - based upon symmetry, probability, familiarity, etc, that allows them to instantly adapt their knowledge to the given surroundings. It forms a very basic step in survival. When trying to make machines intelligent, one of …
