Arbitrating Energy: The Impact Of Arbitration On The Energy Transition, Somtochukwu Attamah, Lara B. Fowler

Arbitration Law Review (2009 - Present)

Even prior to recent events in the Middle East, the global energy sector has been undergoing a significant transformation as states pursue regulatory reforms aimed at addressing climate change, environmental protection, and energy system restructuring. These developments have contributed to an increase in disputes arising from energy-related investments, particularly where regulatory measures affect existing investment expectations. This paper examines the role of arbitration in the context of global energy transitions by tracking publicly available arbitration cases through 2022 and analyzing selected energy disputes linked to regulatory change. It explores how arbitration operates not only as a mechanism for resolving …

Can Methanogens Grow On Asteroids?, Isabella N. Reimer May 2026

Can Methanogens Grow On Asteroids?, Isabella N. Reimer

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Because of asteroids’ chemical features, they may serve as potential environments for life and are of interest in astrobiology. Dr. Kral’s laboratory studies methanogens, microorganisms in the domain Archaea, as possible life forms on extraterrestrial bodies. Since some methanogens can withstand harsh environmental conditions and produce methane as a waste product, methane production can be used as an indicator of potential microbial activity.  In this study, three methanogen species, Methanothermobacter wolfeii, Methanobacterium formicicum, and Methanosarcina barkeri were tested for growth on asteroid simulants based on the Orgueil (CIE-1) and Murchison (CME-1) meteorites. First, methanogen growth was assessed in the …

The Genetic Basis Of High Transformation Efficiency In The Model Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Mary Kathryn E. Cheek May 2026

The Genetic Basis Of High Transformation Efficiency In The Model Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Mary Kathryn E. Cheek

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Transformation, a type of horizontal gene transfer, describes the uptake, maintenance, and integration of environmental DNA by cells. Despite the known effects of transformation on evolutionary processes, little is known about the genetic basis of this phenomenon. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a eukaryote able to transform at quantifiable rates when made chemically competent and treated with a heat shock. S. cerevisiae also has variation in transformation efficiencies between various strains, and high recombination rates allow for sufficient allele “shuffling” in intercross populations. This project utilizes a bulk segregant analysis approach to compare sequencing data between transformant pools and non-transformant pools of …

Enhancing Methods For Load Rating Bridge Timber Piles, Aashish Ghimire May 2026

Enhancing Methods For Load Rating Bridge Timber Piles, Aashish Ghimire

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Timber piles are widely used in bridge foundations across the United States due to their low cost and ease of installation. The strength of a timber pile is dependent on many factors including wood species, unbraced length, support conditions, age and cross-sectional properties. Cross-sectional properties are highly impacted by the progression of biological deterioration which often is undetected when using standard DOT inspections methods. Current inspection practices rely primarily on subjective methods that provide limited quantitative information about a pile’s existing load-carrying capacity. Consequently, timber piles are inaccurately assessed and prematurely replaced. In response, this thesis investigates the relationship between …

Assessing Diffusive Gradients In Thin Films Passive Samplers For Pfas Quantitation In Aqueous Systems, Brianna Harris

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) passive samplers are an alternative to grab sampling for quantifying time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous systems. DGTs may enable long-term PFAS site characterization in a more time and cost-effective manner compared to grab sampling, but critical information is lacking in PFAS diffusion coefficient (DGel) uncertainty, PFAS quantitation limits, and environmental impacts on DGT performance. This work provides a thorough evaluation of DGT performance for a suite of 32 PFAS through (i) determining gel-layer PFAS diffusion coefficients and their associated error (i.e., 95 % confidence intervals (CIs)), (ii) assessing …

Cracking The Hive Code: A Quantitative Examination Of Queen Bee Syndrome Behaviors In K–12 Education, Katie Renee Gordon

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Queen Bee Syndrome (QBS) has historically been used to describe women who distance themselves from other women and hinder the advancement of female peers (Staines et al., 1974). While early explanations framed QBS as rooted in individual competitiveness, more recent scholarship suggests it may reflect responses to gender discrimination and organizational context (Derks, 2017). In K–12 education, women comprise the majority of the workforce, yet remain underrepresented in upper leadership roles, particularly the superintendency. The purpose of this study was to examine perceptions of Queen Bee Syndrome behaviors among female leaders in K–12 educational settings and to explore how internal …

Persistence In The Pressure Cooker: A Mixed-Methods Case Study Of Teacher Working Conditions In High Turnover School Districts, John E. Byrnes

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

American schools face teacher shortages in many disciplines and age groups (Darling-Hammond et al., 2023; Learning Policy Institute, 2024). Rural and urban schools, especially those serving low-socioeconomic-status students, feel this shortage most (Goldhaber et al., 2021; Ingersoll et al., 2022). Teachers report rising dissatisfaction with their work (Lin et al., 2024). This study examined teacher working conditions in two high-turnover districts: Orleans and Jefferson Parish Schools. It used an explanatory sequential mixed-methods case study to assess working conditions (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2011; Stake, 1995; Yin, 2009). District and federal data showed limited resources in Jefferson Parish. Orleans Parish had …

Cross‑Scale Transferability Of Soil Moisture Model Parameters Using Satellite And Ground Observations And Experimental Studies, Niraj Karki May 2026

Cross‑Scale Transferability Of Soil Moisture Model Parameters Using Satellite And Ground Observations And Experimental Studies, Niraj Karki

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Soil moisture is a key variable in hydrology that controls water and energy exchange between the land surface and the atmosphere. Despite its importance, reliably estimating soil moisture is challenging because different measurement methods measure it at different scales and with varying accuracy. Ground-based sensors provide reliable point-scale data but are costly and spatially limited. In this context, models that can produce spatially and temporally consistent soil moisture are valuable tools. However, such models need calibration, and their use is limited by the unavailability of soil moisture data. Satellite products such as the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) offer wide …
