A Perspective For Teaching Communication Ethics, Marvin D. Jensen

Iowa Journal of Communication

A course in communication ethics needs to be grounded in a larger perspective or context. While students are always free to agree or disagree with such a perspective, they should at least be offered a philosophy within which to judge particular communication acts. This paper suggests an ethical perspective which is based on a closer look at kindness.

Over the past decades organic materials have shown an important potential for applications in the field of nonlinear optics. Two-photon absorbing materials can be optically addressed in three dimensions of space, which make them unique for many new applications, including 3D displays, optical memories, bio-sensors, etc. Fluorescent organic chromophores can be synthesized with structures especially optimized for this nonlinear optical property. Yet, for some applications, they have to be incorporated in solid state matrices. We especially investigate hybrid organic/inorganic doped matrices synthesized by solgel process. In distributed systems design, middleware is a key component. Middleware establishes the communication between a client and server in a multi-tiered architecture. One approach to middleware is implementing the OMG's CORBA standard, through the use of ORBs. Three of the more popular commercially available ORBs are Sun's Java 2 ORB, Borland's VisiBroker for Java, and IONA's Orbix 2000 for Java. The purpose of this graduate project was to compare the three ORBs both quantitatively and qualitatively. Some Statistical Models For Durations And Their Applications In Finance, Harry Zheng, David E. Allen, Lyn C. Thomas

We first consider a new class of time series models (introduced by Engle and Russell (1998)) use in statistical applications in finance. These models treat the time between events (durations) as a stochastic process and the corresponding durations are modelled using a theory similar to that of autoregressive processes. This new class of time series models is called Autoregressive Conditional Duration (ACD) models. Various extensions and the statistical properties of this class of ACD models are given. We also suggest some alternative models for durations arising from the market microstructure literature. An estimation procedure is discussed. The theory is illustrated …
