Are Bank Deposits And Bank-Affiliated Managed Funds Close Substitutes?, David E. Allen, Jerry T. Parwada Jan 2001

Are Bank Deposits And Bank-Affiliated Managed Funds Close Substitutes?, David E. Allen, Jerry T. Parwada

Research outputs pre 2011

This study tests the hypothesis that bank liabilities and managed funds are close substitutes. Some literature associates the alleged decline in banking business with the disintermediation of banks’ traditional deposit-taking business in favour of investment management. A comparative assessment of managed fund and bank deposit qualitative attributes fails to support substitutability. Using data on Australian bank-affiliated funds and a nine-year record of bank liability balances, this study finds that, empirically, managed funds do not displace bank liabilities. Prudential capital adequacy requirements dissuade banks from using in-house managed investments as indirect conduits for raising funds in the same manner as deposit …

The Duration Derby : A Comparison Of Duration Based Strategies In Asset Liability Management, Harry Zheng, David E. Allen, Lyn C. Thomas Jan 2001

The Duration Derby : A Comparison Of Duration Based Strategies In Asset Liability Management, Harry Zheng, David E. Allen, Lyn C. Thomas

Research outputs pre 2011

Macaulay duration matched strategy is a key tool in bond portfolio immunization. It is well known that if term structures are not at or changes are not parallel, then Macaulay duration matched portfolio can not guarantee adequate immunization. In this paper the approximate duration is proposed to measure the bond price sensitivity to changes of interest rates of non- at term structures. Its performance in immunization is compared with those of Macaulay, partial and key rate durations using the US Treasury STRIPS and Bond data. Approximate duration turns out to be a possible contender in asset liability management: it does …

Commentary: International And Comparative Law Perspectives On Internet Patents, Toshiko Takenaka Jan 2001

Commentary: International And Comparative Law Perspectives On Internet Patents, Toshiko Takenaka

Articles

The Internet and e-commerce have created a borderless market. Goods and services sold on the Internet are subject to the patent statutes and regulations of all countries in which customers have access. Because the presence or absence of patent protection—or variations in that protection—hinders the movement of goods and services throughout the Internet, it is necessary to harmonize the protection afforded by Internet patents in their early stages of development. Among the three papers, however, only Professor Chiappetta touched upon the problem of compliance with the provisions in TRIPS. None of the papers paid attention to the feasibility of harmonizing …

A 4-Dimensional 1-Lcc Shrinking Theorem, Mladen Bestvina, Robert J. Daverman, Gerard A. Venema Jan 2001

A 4-Dimensional 1-Lcc Shrinking Theorem, Mladen Bestvina, Robert J. Daverman, Gerard A. Venema

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This paper contains several shrinking theorems for decompositions of 4-dimensional manifolds. Let f : M → X be a closed, cell-like mapping of a 4-manifold M onto a metric space X and let Y be a closed subset of X such that X - Y is a 4-manifold and Y is locally simply co-connected in X. The main result states that f can be approximated by homeomorphisms if Y is a 1-dimensional ANR. The techniques of the proof also show that f can be approximated by homeomorphisms in case Y is an arbitrary 0-dimensional closed subset. Combining the two results …

Buckets: Smart Objects For Digital Libraries, Michael L. Nelson Jan 2001

Buckets: Smart Objects For Digital Libraries, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Current discussion of digital libraries (DLs) is often dominated by the merits of the respective storage, search and retrieval functionality of archives, repositories, search engines, search interfaces and database systems. While these technologies are necessary for information management, the information content is more important than the systems used for its storage and retrieval. Digital information should have the same long-term survivability prospects as traditional hardcopy information and should be protected to the extent possible from evolving search engine technologies and vendor vagaries in database management systems. Information content and information retrieval systems should progress on independent paths and make limited …

Analysis Of A Non-Replicated Split-Split Plot Experiment, Emily Simmons Sim Jan 2001

Analysis Of A Non-Replicated Split-Split Plot Experiment, Emily Simmons Sim

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A major obstacle in the analysis of experimental data, in many situations, is the lack of "true" or "complete" replication. In some disciplines, researchers are very aware of the importance of replication and the methods for correctly replicating an experiment. In other subject areas, however, researchers are less aware of what it means to properly replicate an experiment. Due to this lack of awareness, many non-replicated experiments are carried out every year. For many of these non-replicated experiments, there is no satisfactory statistical analysis.

The subject of this report is the analysis of two non-replicated experiments in environmental engineering. First, …

Simulation/Optimization Applications And Software For Optimal Ground-Water And Conjunctive Water Management, Richard C. Peralta Jan 2001

Simulation/Optimization Applications And Software For Optimal Ground-Water And Conjunctive Water Management, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Diverse water management simulation/optimization (S/O) experiences promoted the development of many S/O modeling approaches and models. Several of these are being incorporated within the Simulation/Optimization Modeling System (SOMOS). Non-modeler water scientists or engineers can apply one SOMOS module to optimize field-scale groundwater and conjunctive water management. Experienced groundwater modelers can apply other modules to optimally manage complex heterogeneous aquifer and stream-aquifer systems. SOMOS employs a variety of simulation models and approaches and optimization algorithms to optimize flow and contaminant management. SOMOS or its precursor modules have been well proven in real-world projects. Designed for use by consultants, students, academics, and …

Dynamics Of Stars And Globular Clusters In M87, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek Jan 2001

Dynamics Of Stars And Globular Clusters In M87, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek

Faculty Publications

We examine the dynamics of the stars and globular clusters in the nearby giant elliptical galaxy M87 and constrain the mass distribution, using all the available data over a large range of radii, including higher order moments of the stellar line-of-sight velocity distributions and the discrete velocities of over 200 globular clusters. We introduce an extension of spherical orbit modeling methods that makes full use of all the information in the data and provides very robust constraints on the mass models. We conclusively rule out a constant mass-to-light ratio model and infer that the radial density profile of the galaxy's …

Multivariate Calibration For Icp-Aes, Michael Lee Griffiths Jan 2001

Multivariate Calibration For Icp-Aes, Michael Lee Griffiths

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The analysis of metals is now a major application area for ICP-AES, however, the technique suffers from both spectral and non-spectral interferences. This thesis details the application of univariate and multivariate calibration methods for the prediction of Pt, Pd, and Rh in acid-digested and of Au, Ag and Pd in fusion-digested autocatalyst samples. Of all the univariate calibration methods investigated matrix matching proved the most accurate method with relative root mean square errors (RRMSEs) for Pt, Pd and Rh of 2.4, 3.7, and 2.4 % for a series of synihelic lest solutions, and 12.0, 2.4, and 8.0 % for autocatalyst …

The Development Of A Holistic Expert System For Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Antoni Bruce Moore Jan 2001

The Development Of A Holistic Expert System For Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Antoni Bruce Moore

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Coastal data and information comprise a massive and complex resource, which is vital to the practice of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), an increasingly important application. ICZM is just as complex, but uses the holistic paradigm to deal with the sophistication. The application domain and its resource require a tool of matching characteristics, which is facilitated by the current wide availability of high performance computing. An object-oriented expert system, COAMES, has been constructed to prove this concept. The application of expert systems to ICZM in particular has been flagged as a viable challenge and yet very few have taken it …

Study Of The Effect Of Turbulence On The Properties Of Flocculated Mud, Andrew Manning Jan 2001

Study Of The Effect Of Turbulence On The Properties Of Flocculated Mud, Andrew Manning

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

For the successful management of an estuary, an accurate simulation model predicting sediment transport patterns is a necessity. This requires a knowledge of the vertical mass settling flux (MSF), which is the product of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration and the settling velocity (Ws). However the presence of cohesive sediments (i.e. mud) complicates this description due to the ability of mud particles to flocculate into larger aggregates (floes) which demonstrate faster settling velocities and lower effective densities (pe) than the component cohesive particles. The generation of turbulent shear stress (TSS) within the water column is regarded as having a …

The two aims of the project involved: 1. Devising a system for prediction o f areas of bathymetric change within the Fal estuary 2. Formulating and evaluating a method for interpolating single beam acoustic bathymetry to avoid artefacts o f interpolation. In order to address these aims, sources of bathymetric data for the Fal estuary were identified as Truro Harbour Office, Cornwall County Council and the Environment Agency. The data collected from these sources included red wavelength Lidar, aerial photography and single beam acoustic bathymetry from a number of different years. These data were input into a Geographic Information System …

Music In Reality The Relation Of Music, Emotion And Pre-Socratic Myth, Brian Capleton Jan 2001

Music In Reality The Relation Of Music, Emotion And Pre-Socratic Myth, Brian Capleton

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is in two sections. The first critically examines the tradition of harmonia mundi. The earliest complete and developed account of musica mundana appears in Plato, but numerous fragmented references appear in the pre-Socratic sources. The notion that harmonia mundi originated as an idea of quantitative speeds and distances of the celestial bodies, is discredited. Rather, it is shown that it more probably originates as an expression of an 'esoteric spiritual' teaching in which self-knowledge, death, the concept of harmonia, and consequently music, are related. The idea that the greatest importance of music rests on the relationship of music …

Poetic Anatomy Of The Numinous Creative Passages Into The Self As Beloved, Partou Zia Jan 2001

Poetic Anatomy Of The Numinous Creative Passages Into The Self As Beloved, Partou Zia

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research is shaped by the actual experience of practice: as painter and writer. My preoccupation is with the nodal moment when conscious awareness is suspended, and both the corporal and psychic involvement in realising the work almost transport one to another zone of effectiveness. This zone, which I name as the poetic zone, is where the numinous enters the ordinary. The investigation for a space/place/moment that lies beyond the logic of acceptable discourse can help initiate and give shape to a new vocabulary - visual or literary. By orchestrating a methodology, which functions on several layers, I have endeavoured …
