Investment Performance Comparison Between Roth And Traditional Individual Retirement Accounts, George Kutner, Lloyd Doney, James Trebby Jan 2001

Investment Performance Comparison Between Roth And Traditional Individual Retirement Accounts, George Kutner, Lloyd Doney, James Trebby

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

With the recent introduction of the Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA) along with a significantly improved Traditional IRA, there has been considerable interest in comparing the performance of these investment vehicles. Some confusion regarding these comparisons has evolved. In this paper we show that this confusion may be attributed to scale and tax differences between the two investment vehicles. We adjust for these differences by focusing on the after-tax rate-of-return on investment for each IRA vehicle. We find that performance depends crucially on the relationship between an individual's tax rates at the time of investment and at the time of …

Game Theory And Customary International Law: A Response To Professors Goldsmith And Posner, Mark A. Chinen Jan 2001

Game Theory And Customary International Law: A Response To Professors Goldsmith And Posner, Mark A. Chinen

Faculty Articles

In a pair of recent articles, Professors Jack Goldsmith and Eric Posner have used game theoretic principles to challenge the positivist account of customary international law. Their writings join other early attempts to apply game theory to the international law sources. This article has two purposes. The first is to evaluate game theory's potential for yielding greater insight into customary international law and international law more generally. The second is to respond to the conclusions about customary international law drawn by Professors Goldsmith and Posner. In Part I, Professor Chinen discusses the approach proposed by these two scholars. Traditionally, customary …

Law Students' Undergraduate Major: Implications For Law School Academic Support Programs (Asps) Performance, Bryan Adamson, Mark Graham Jan 2001

Law Students' Undergraduate Major: Implications For Law School Academic Support Programs (Asps) Performance, Bryan Adamson, Mark Graham

Faculty Articles

This article addresses whether or not law students' comparative educational backgrounds affect their ability to solve general deductive reasoning problems. This question leads to two broader issues: (1) whether any comparative differences in general reasoning competency affect a student's ability to reason within a legal framework; and (2) whether a student's reasoning competency remains static over three years of law school. This article addresses the first issue. At present, a separate study is being conducted to explore how general reasoning differences may influence a student's ability to reason within a legal framework. This article contends that law school academic support …

Modal Rules Are Co-Implications, Alexander Kurz Jan 2001

Modal Rules Are Co-Implications, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

In [13], it was shown that modal logic for coalgebras dualises—concerning definability— equational logic for algebras. This paper establishes that, similarly, modal rules dualise implications:It is shown that a class of coalgebras is definable by modal rules iff it is closed under H (images) and Σ (disjoint unions). As a corollary the expressive power of rules of infinitary modal logic on Kripke frames is characterised.

Fair Use And The Digital Distribution Of Music - Recording Industry Association Of America V. Napster, Inc. (A Comparative Analysis Of A Restraint On Copyright In The United States Of America And Trinidad And Tobago), Michelle Lisa Alexander

LLM Theses and Essays

The purpose of this thesis is to undertake a critical analysis of the Napster judgment and its treatment of the doctrine of fair use, to determine whether the doctrine can retain its integrity in the internet age. It is proposed that as technology advances, U.S. policymakers are moving away from the constitutional objectives of U.S. copyright law and are equating copyright interests with property rights, to the detriment of noncommercial users of copyrighted works. Further, it is suggested that the decision in the Napster litigation is important for the evolving landscape of U.S. copyright law, as it signals the difficulty …

In this aim, those in the business of securing online information call upon an area …

An Explanation And Illustration Of The Importance Of Infinite Series In Mathematics, Allison Walker Jan 2001

An Explanation And Illustration Of The Importance Of Infinite Series In Mathematics, Allison Walker

Honors Theses

The purpose of this work is to first, explore exactly what an infinite series is, and second, to explain the importance of infinite series is, and second, to explain the importance of infinite sries in the everyday calculations of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers. In investigating this topic, I researched the development of infinite sries as well as how Taylor and Mclaurin series are derived. I then considered many different problems containing intractable functions. In the consideration of these problems I was able to explore the usefulness of infinite series in solving these intractable problems. The conclusion of this research was …

Arc - An Oai Service Provider For Digital Library Federation, Xiaoming Liu, Kurt Maly, Mohammad Zubair, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The usefulness of the many on-line journals and scientific digital libraries that exist today is limited by the inability to federate these resources through a unified interface. The Open Archive Initiative (OAI) is one major effort to address technical interoperability among distributed archives. The objective of OAI is to develop a framework to facilitate the discovery of content in distributed archives. In this paper, we describe our experience and lessons learned in building Arc, the first federated searching service based on the OAI protocol. Arc harvests metadata from several OAI compliant archives, normalizes them, and stores them in a search …

On Marczewski-Burstin Representations Of Certain Algebras Of Sets, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 2001

On Marczewski-Burstin Representations Of Certain Algebras Of Sets, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We show that the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis GCH (its appropriate part) implies that many natural algebras on R, including the algebra B of Borel sets and the interval algebra S, are outer Marczewski-Burstin representable by families of non-Borel sets. Also we construct, assuming again an appropriate part of GCH, that there are algebras on R which are not MB-representable. We prove that some algebras (including B and S) are not inner MB-representable. We give examples of algebras which are inner and outer MB-representable, or are inner but not outer MB-representable.

Measure Zero Sets Whose Algebraic Sum Is Non-Measurable, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In this note we will show that for every natural number n > 0 there exists an S ⊂ [0, 1] such that its n-th algebraic sum nS = S + ··· + S is a nowhere dense measure zero set,but its n+ 1-st algebraic sum nS +S is neither measurable nor it has the Baire property. In addition, the set S will be also a Hamel base, that is,a linear base of R over Q.

For any subset C of R there is a subset A of C such that A+A has inner measure zero and outer measure the same as C+C. Also, there is a subset A of the Cantor middle third set such that A+A is Bernstein in [0,2]. On the other hand there is a perfect set C such that C+C is an interval I and there is no subset A of C with A+A Bernstein in I.

Practice In The Electronic Community, Roger A. Lohmann, John Mcnutt Jan 2001

Practice In The Electronic Community, Roger A. Lohmann, John Mcnutt

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The Internet was at its inception a commons rather than a marketplace. Increasingly, however, communitarian notions have been overwhelmed by the internet as one huge shopping arcade. The potential is certainly there for this amazing technology to advance the causes of human freedom well-being and community. At the same time, however, this powerful set of technologies that in less than a decade have become nearly universal in scope and sweep, have the potential also to become simply another extension of the global economic marketplace. Far worse, there is also the potential to become a power tool for class domination or …

Performance Of Genetic Algorithms For Data Classification, Matthew E. Stine Jan 2001

Performance Of Genetic Algorithms For Data Classification, Matthew E. Stine

Honors Theses

In today's world, the amount of raw data archived across multiple distinct domains is growing at an exponential rate. "Data Mining" is a continuously evolving family of processes by which individuals extract useful information from these data. Classification is one of these processes, and is the construction of varying types of descriptive models from labeled data objects, for the purpose of predicting the label of those objects with unknown labels. The construction of these modules is often adversely affected by the presence of incorrect values or outlier values within the data, a phenomenon known as noise. The original motivation of …

Regularity And Symmetry As A Base For Efficient Realization Of Reversible Logic Circuits, Marek Perkowski, Pawel Kerntopf, Andrzej Buller, Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske, Alan Mishchenko, Xiaoyu Song, Anas Al-Rabadi, Lech Jozwiak, Alan Coppola Jan 2001

Regularity And Symmetry As A Base For Efficient Realization Of Reversible Logic Circuits, Marek Perkowski, Pawel Kerntopf, Andrzej Buller, Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske, Alan Mishchenko, Xiaoyu Song, Anas Al-Rabadi, Lech Jozwiak, Alan Coppola

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We introduce a Reversible Programmable Gate Array (RPGA) based on regular structure to realize binary functions in reversible logic. This structure, called a 2 * 2 Net Structure, allows for more efficient realization of symmetric functions than the methods shown by previous authors. In addition, it realizes many non-symmetric functions even without variable repetition. Our synthesis method to RPGAs allows to realize arbitrary symmetric function in a completely regular structure of reversible gates with smaller “garbage” than the previously presented papers. Because every Boolean function is symmetrizable by repeating input variables, our method is applicable to arbitrary multi-input, multi-output Boolean …

Preliminary Evaluation Of A Guideline Classification System, Elmer Bernstam, Nachman Ash, Mor Peleg, Samson Tu, Edward H. Shortliffe, Robert A. Greenes Jan 2001

Preliminary Evaluation Of A Guideline Classification System, Elmer Bernstam, Nachman Ash, Mor Peleg, Samson Tu, Edward H. Shortliffe, Robert A. Greenes

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In a previous paper, we presented a proposed expansion of the National Guideline Clearing-house (NGC) classification1. We performed a preliminary evaluation of the classification based on 100 guidelines randomly selected from the NGC collection. We found that 89 of the 100 guidelines could be assigned to a single guideline category. To test inter-observer agreement, twenty guidelines were also categorized by a second investigator. Agreement was found to be 40-90% depending on the axis, which compares favorably with agreement among MeSH indexers (30-60%)2. We conclude that categorization is feasible. Further research is needed to clarify axes with poor inter-observer agreement.

Synthesis Of Cyclopropanes Via Organoiron Methodology: Preparation Of 2-(2′-Carboxy-3′-Ethylcyclopropyl)Glycine, Kamil Godula, William A. Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A route to 1,2,3-trisubstituted cyclopropanes has been developed. The relative stereochemistry at the three cyclopropane centers is established by nucleophilic attack on the pentadienyl ligand on the face opposite to iron and subsequent oxidatively induced reductive elimination with retention of configuration. This methodology was applied to the synthesis of 2-(2′-carboxy-3′-ethylcyclopropyl)glycines. The diastereomeric glycine dimethyl esters are separable as their diphenylmethylene imines.

The conformationally restricted glutamate analogs (2S,1′S,2′S,3′R)- and (2R,1′S,2′S,3′R)-ECCG's 5a and5b were prepared in five steps (17 and 15% yield, respectively) from (pentadienyl)Fe(CO) …
