Electronic Structure Of Chromium Oxides, Cron- And Cron (N=1-5) From Photoelectron Spectroscopy And Density Functional Theory Calculations, G. L. Gutsev, P. Jena, Hua-Jin Zhai, Lai-Sheng Wang

Physics Publications

The electronic structure of CrO−n and CrOn (n=1–5) was investigated using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory. Photoelectron spectra of CrO−n were obtained at several photon energies and yielded electron affinities, vibrational and electronic structure information about the neutral CrOn species. Density functional theory calculations were carried out for both the neutrals and anions and were used to interpret the experimental spectra. Several low-lying electronic states of CrO were observed and assigned from photodetachment of the CrO− ground state(6∑+) and an excited state (4∏), which is only 0.1 eV higher. The main spectral features of CrO−2 were interpreted based …

Orientation And Speed Of The Parsec-Scale Jet In Ngc4261 (3c270), B. Glenn Piner, Dayton L. Jones, Ann E. Wehrle

Physics

NGC 4261 (3C 270) is an elliptical galaxy containing a 300 pc–scale nuclear disk of gas and dust imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), around a central supermassive black hole. Previous VLBI observations of NGC 4261 revealed a gap in emission in the radio counterjet, presumably due to free-free absorption in the inner parsec of the accretion disk. Here we present three 8 GHz VLBA observations of NGC 4261 that allow us to monitor the location and depth of the gap and check for motions in the jet and counterjet. The separation between the brightest peak and …

A Degree Of Nonlocal Connectedness, J. J. Charatonik, W. J. Charatonik Jan 2001

A Degree Of Nonlocal Connectedness, J. J. Charatonik, W. J. Charatonik

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

To any continuum X weassign an ordinal number (or the symbol ∞) s(X), called the degree of nonlocal connectedness of X. We show that (1) the degree cannot be increased under continuous surjections; (2) for hereditarily unicoherent continua X, the degree of a subcontinuum of X is less than or equal to s(X); (3) s(C(X)) ≤ s(X), where C(X) denotes the hyperspace of subcontinua of a continuum X. We also investigate the degrees of Cartesian products and inverse limits. As an application weconstruct an uncountable family of metric continua X homeomorphic to C(X).

Assessment Of Kriging Accuracy In The Gis Environment, I-Kuai Hung Jan 2001

Assessment Of Kriging Accuracy In The Gis Environment, I-Kuai Hung

Faculty Presentations

The demand for spatial data is on the rise. However, even the latest technology cannot guarantee an error free database in Geographic Information System (GIS). In natural resources the point field sampling is often used for spatially oriented projects and interpolation methods are implemented to predict the values in an unsampled location and to generate maps. In order to evaluate the performance of Kriging interpolation in GIS the Kriging errors were analyzed and compared to the four other interpolation methods using fundamental statistical parameters. The sensitivity of ordinary Kriging interpolation in the GIS environment was evaluated with respect to the …

Propagation Of Errors In Spatial Analysis, Peter P. Siska, I-Kuai Hung Jan 2001

Propagation Of Errors In Spatial Analysis, Peter P. Siska, I-Kuai Hung

Faculty Presentations

In most spatially oriented projects, the conversion of data from analog to digital form used to be an extremely time-consuming process. At present, industrial and research institutions continue to accumulate large quantities of data that are easily accessible to users worldwide, and consequently less time is spent for data input. In addition, the introduction of Internet2 rapidly increased the transfer of spatial data through the electronic highway and opened new avenues for collaboration among research institutions and scientists. It is apparent that this trend will continue in the future. New regional and national centers for spatial data are being established …

Ii. Curriculum Models That Include Undergraduate Research Jan 2001

Ii. Curriculum Models That Include Undergraduate Research

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

This chapter features different perspectives on integrating research into the curriculum. The series of papers describes programs, credit bearing as well as non-credit bearing, that include a significant research component.

The first four papers provide an excellent contrast of approaches to bringing research into the undergraduate curriculum. The Gemstone Program at the University of Maryland is a fouryear honors program that includes research methods courses and a four-year-long, team-based research project. The students identify the topic, propose the research question and are mentored by a faculty member. The next model describes the efforts in Muhlenberg College's Biology Department to include …

Coptcr:C Nanocomposite Films For High Density Recording, H. Zeng, M.L. Yan, Yi Liu, David J. Sellmyer Jan 2001

Coptcr:C Nanocomposite Films For High Density Recording, H. Zeng, M.L. Yan, Yi Liu, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

We report results on the magnetic properties of nanocomposite films of the form (Co86Cr14)xPt1-x:C, which were prepared by magnetron sputtering and subsequent annealing. X-ray diffraction shows that these films consist of CoPtCr grains with the face-centered-tetragonal structure embedded in an amorphous C matrix. Magnetic properties such as coercivity (Hc), remanence ratio (S), and coercive squareness (S*) are strongly dependent on the Pt and C composition and annealing temperatures. Compared with previously reported CoPt:C films with a equiatomic Co and Pt ratio, lower exchange coupling and …

On The Insensitivity Of The Wind-Driven Circulation To Bottom Topography, David P. Marshall, James C. Stephens Jan 2001

On The Insensitivity Of The Wind-Driven Circulation To Bottom Topography, David P. Marshall, James C. Stephens

Journal of Marine Research

An analytical model is developed for the wind-driven circulation in a continuously stratified ocean overlying variable bottom topography. In the ocean interior we adopt a linear relation between potential vorticity, density and Montgomery potential, resulting in Welander's solution for an adiabatic internal thermocline. The horizontal structure of the circulation is described by a characteristic equation, obtained by imposing a boundary condition of no-normal flow at the sea floor and a prescribed vertical velocity through the base of the surface Ekman layer. The characteristics, which determine the extent to which bottom topography "steers" the circulation within the upper ocean, are dominated …

A Data Assimilative Marine Ecosystem Model Of The Central Equatorial Pacific: Numerical Twin Experiments, Marjorie A. M. Friedrichs Jan 2001

A Data Assimilative Marine Ecosystem Model Of The Central Equatorial Pacific: Numerical Twin Experiments, Marjorie A. M. Friedrichs

Journal of Marine Research

A five-component, data assimilative marine ecosystem model is developed for the high-nutrient low-chlorophyll region of the central equatorial Pacific (0N, 140W). Identical twin experiments, in which model-generated synthetic 'data' are assimilated into the model, are employed to determine the feasibility of improving simulation skill by assimilating in situ cruise data (plankton, nutrients and primary production) and remotely-sensed ocean color data. Simple data assimilative schemes such as data insertion or nudging may be insufficient for lower trophic level marine ecosystem models, since they require long time-series of daily to weekly plankton and nutrient data as well as adequate knowledge of the …

On The Difference Equation Xn+1=(Alpha)+(Beta)Xn-1e^(-Xn), H. El-Metwally, Edward Grove, Gerry Ladas

Articles

We study the global stability, the boundedness nature, and the periodic character of the positive solutions of the difference equation x(n+1)=(alpha)+(beta)x(n-1)e^(-xn), n=0,1,... which is interesting in its own right, but which may also be viewed as describing a population model (Refer to PDF file for exact formulas).

Mixture Hazards Models With Additive Random Effects Accounting For Treatment Effectiveness Lag Time, Ying Qing Chen, C. A. Rohde, M.-C. Wang Jan 2001

Mixture Hazards Models With Additive Random Effects Accounting For Treatment Effectiveness Lag Time, Ying Qing Chen, C. A. Rohde, M.-C. Wang

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In many clinical trials to evaluate treatment efficacy, it is believed that there may exist latent treatment effectiveness lag times after which medical treatment procedure or chemical compound would be in full effect. In this article, semiparametric regression models are proposed and studied for estimating the treatment effect accounting for such latent lag times. The new models take advantage of the invariance property of the additive hazards model in marginalising over an additive latent variable; parameters in the models are thus easily estimated and interpreted, while the flexibility of not having to specify the baseline hazard function is preserved. Monte …

Factors Influencing Spatial Variability Of Soil Apparent Electrical Conductivity, D. E. Clay, J. Chang, D. D. Malo, C. G. Carlson, C. Reese, S. A. Clay, M. Ellsbury, B. Berg

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) can be used as a precision farming diagnostic tool more efficiently if the factors influencing ECa spatial variability are understood. The objective of this study was to ascertain the causes of ECa spatial variability in soils developed in an environment with between 50 and 65 cm of annual rainfall. Soils at the research sites were formed on calcareous glacial till parent materials deposited approximately 10,000 years ago. Soil samples (0–15 cm) collected from at least a 60 by 60 m grid in four fields were analyzed for Olsen phosphorus (P) and …

Complexity As Fitness For Evolved Cellular Automata Update Rules, Em Ward, Doug Blank, Douglas Rolniak, Dale R. Thompson Jan 2001

Complexity As Fitness For Evolved Cellular Automata Update Rules, Em Ward, Doug Blank, Douglas Rolniak, Dale R. Thompson

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

We investigate the state change behavior of one-dimensional cellular automata during the solution of the binary density-classification task. Update rules of high, low and un- known fitness are applied to cellular au- tomata, thereby providing examples of high and low rates of successful classification. A spread factor, ω, is introduced and investi- gated as a numerical marker of state change behavior. The nature of ω describes complex or particle-like behavior on the part of the cellular automata over the middle region of initial configuration density-distribution, but breaks down at the ends. Because of the lim- itation on ω, a related …

Thrown Away Like Rubbish - Disposal Of The Dead In Ancient Greece, Astrid Lindenlauf Jan 2001

Thrown Away Like Rubbish - Disposal Of The Dead In Ancient Greece, Astrid Lindenlauf

Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this article, the literary and archaeological evidence for burial practices that can be associated with the English expression ‘to be disposed of like rubbish’ are discussed. These disposal methods (átaphon rhíptesthai) include the exposure of corpses to carrion animals, to the elements, as well as the disposal of corpses into the sea, pits or natural fissures without burial rites. They also include cases in which graves were dug up in order to throw their contents out. Here, the Greek expressions for the English phrase ‘to be thrown away like rubbish’ are explored, as well as its relation …

Reconciliation And Harmony: The Philosophical Art Of Tragic Drama, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2001

Reconciliation And Harmony: The Philosophical Art Of Tragic Drama, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

In the performance of art one can begin at the beginning, but in a discussion of art one must begin somewhere in the middle. Here, it is with the conviction that art, in whatever form, though it may surprise the sense and quicken the spirit, disturb our thinking or revoke a thoughtless ease, still, its full expression restores a sense of presence and wholeness to our being. That is, every art form has a point of closure in a harmony of the spirit. Even tragic drama, which brings the darkness of human character into a glare of recognition and acceptance, …

The Effect Of Space And Furnishings On Academic Readiness Scores Of West Virginia Preschoolers, J. Elise Coccari Jan 2001

The Effect Of Space And Furnishings On Academic Readiness Scores Of West Virginia Preschoolers, J. Elise Coccari

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The effect of space and furnishings, as measured by the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale – Revised (ECERS-R), on the School Readiness Composite (SRC) of the Bracken Basic Concept Scale –Revised (BBCS-R) was investigated. The data analyzed was collected as part of the West Virginia Educare Initiative and included the SRC from 65 preschool students, ranging in age from 2 years, 6 months to 5 years, 0 months. The first subtest score on the ECERS-R, space and furnishings, was also calculated for each child’s classroom. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient between the SRC on the BBCS-R and the space and …
