The Breakdown Of Synchronization In Systems Of Non-Identical Chaotic Oscillators: Theory And Experiment, Jennifer Chubb, Ernest Barreto, Paul So, Bruce J. Gluckman Jan 2001

The Breakdown Of Synchronization In Systems Of Non-Identical Chaotic Oscillators: Theory And Experiment, Jennifer Chubb, Ernest Barreto, Paul So, Bruce J. Gluckman

Mathematics

The synchronization of chaotic systems has received a great deal of attention. However, most of the literature has focused on systems that possess invariant manifolds that persist as the coupling is varied. In this paper, we describe the process whereby synchronization is lost in systems of nonidentical coupled chaotic oscillators without special symmetries. We qualitatively and quantitatively analyze such systems in terms of the evolution of the unstable periodic orbit structure. Our results are illustrated with data from physical experiments.

Modular Miracles, John Stillwell Jan 2001

Modular Miracles, John Stillwell

Mathematics

Over the last 20 years, the modular function has become widely known through its miraculous intervention in two great mathematical achievements: the proof of Fermat's last theorem and the "moonshine" of the monster simple group. In both cases, the modular function appears where no one expected it, and it bridges a chasm between seemingly unrelated fields. It is probably fair to say that, in these two cases, we do not yet fully understand how the modular magic works.

However, it can at least be said that these are not the first modular miracles. Ever since its discovery, in the early …

Western Australia Soil Acidity Research And Development Update 2001 : Time To Lime, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

This book for 2001 again summarises the work being carried out by staff of The Integrated Soil Acidity Research, Development and Extension projects in Western Australia. These projects are based at Agriculture Western Australia, The University of Western Australia and CSIRO.

Several articles in this book are an indication that the current round of funding for this work is drawing to a close in June 2002. The articles reflect our increasing understanding of not only the effects of soil acidity but also the time required for current practices of surface applied lime to ameliorate acidity in both the surface and …

Thermodynamic Investigation Of The Si7 And Si8 Clusters By Knudsen Cell Mass Spectrometry, Giovanni Meloni, Karl A. Gingerich

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The Knudsen cell mass spectrometric method has been employed to measure the partial pressures of the Si[sub 7] and Si[sub 8] clusters under equilibrium conditions above liquid silicon, contained in a boron nitride liner inside a graphite Knudsen cell. Gaussian 2 (G2) theory and B3LYP density functional method were employed to determine the geometry, the vibrational frequencies, and the binding energy of the Si[sub 8] cluster. From the all-gas analyzed equilibria the following atomization enthalpies, Δ[sub a]H[sub 0][sup o](Si[sub n]), and enthalpies of formation, Δ[sub f]H[sub 298.15][sup o](Si[sub n]), in kJ mol-1, have been obtained: Si[sub 7], 2381±36 and …

Structure And Thermodynamic Stability Of The Osc And Osc2 Molecules By Theoretical Calculations And By Knudsen Cell Mass Spectrometry, Giovanni Meloni, L M. Thomson, Karl A. Gingerich

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Knudsen cell mass spectrometric equilibrium measurements together with theoretical computations have been employed to gain structural and thermodynamic information of the OsC and OsC[sub 2] molecules. Several levels of theory have been applied to determine the structures, molecular parameters, and physico-chemical properties of OsC(g) and OsC[sub 2](g), and their singly charged ions. Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on the apparent [sup 3]Σ[sup -] ground state and first [sup 3]Δ excited state of OsC. From the analyzed gaseous equilibria and the thermal functions calculated from the computed molecular parameters, the following atomization enthalpies, Δ[sub a]H[sub 0][sup o](OsC,g) …

Value Of Incorporating Satellite-Derived Land Cover Data In Mm5/Place For Simulating Surface Temperatures, Todd M. Crawford, David J. Stensrud, Franz Mora, James W. Merchant, Peter J. Wetzel Jan 2001

Value Of Incorporating Satellite-Derived Land Cover Data In Mm5/Place For Simulating Surface Temperatures, Todd M. Crawford, David J. Stensrud, Franz Mora, James W. Merchant, Peter J. Wetzel

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Parameterization for Land–Atmosphere–Cloud Exchange (PLACE) module is used within the Fifth- Generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model (MM5) to determine the importance of individual land surface parameters in simulating surface temperatures. Sensitivity tests indicate that soil moisture and the coverage and thickness of green vegetation [as manifested by the values of fractional green vegetation coverage (fVEG) and leaf area index (LAI)] have a large effect on the magnitudes of surface sensible heat fluxes. The combined influence of LAI and fVEG is larger than the influence of soil moisture on the partitioning of the surface energy …

Some Perspectives On Recent In Situ Air Temperature Observations: Modeling The Microclimate Inside The Radiation Shields*, X. Lin, Kenneth Hubbard, Elizabeth A. Walter-Shea, James Brandle, G.E. Meyer Jan 2001

Some Perspectives On Recent In Situ Air Temperature Observations: Modeling The Microclimate Inside The Radiation Shields*, X. Lin, Kenneth Hubbard, Elizabeth A. Walter-Shea, James Brandle, G.E. Meyer

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Air temperature measurement has inherent biases associated with the particular radiation shield and sensor deployed. The replacement of the Cotton Region Shelter (CRS) with the Maximum–Minimum Temperature System (MMTS) and the introduction of Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) air temperature observing systems during the NWS modernization introduced bias shifts in federal networks that required quantification. In rapidly developing nonfederal networks, the Gill shield temperature systems are widely used. All of these systems house an air temperature sensor in a radiation shield to prevent radiation loading on the sensors; a side effect is that the air temperature entering a shield is …

Impacts Of Predation On Northern Bobwhite And Scaled Quail, Dale Rollins, John P. Carroll Jan 2001

Impacts Of Predation On Northern Bobwhite And Scaled Quail, Dale Rollins, John P. Carroll

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) populations have declined throughout most of their distribution, and these declines have become more dramatic in recent years. In this review, we examine the role of predation in quail management. Predation is the major source of nest loss and of mortality for young and adult quail. Mean nest success across studies reviewed was 28%. Estimates of annual survival rates have varied from 5 to 26% for radiotelemetry studies and from 15 to 30% based on age-ratio studies. Breeding season survival estimates ranged from 13 to 51% in telemetry …

Bollgard Cotton: An Assessment Of Global Economic, Environmental, And Social Benefits, Julie M. Edge, John H. Benedict, John P. Carroll, H. Keith Reding

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Insect-protected crops like Bollgard (Monsanto Company, St. Louis) Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton are bringing cotton growers new alternatives to broad-spectrum insecticide use in integrated pest management. After five years (1996-2000) of commercial use, a number of benefits of Bt cotton technology to growers, the environment, and society at large have been reported; however, the benefits of the technology have not been examined to date from a holistic point of view. Accordingly, the objectives of this paper were to examine the potential economic, environmental, and social benefits of Bt cotton compared with broad-spectrum insecticide use, as reported in current literature, …

Field-Scale Remediation Of A Metolachlor-Contaminated Spill Site Using Zerovalent Iron, Steven Comfort, Patrick J. Shea, Thomas A. Machacek, H. Gaber, B.-T. Oh Jan 2001

Field-Scale Remediation Of A Metolachlor-Contaminated Spill Site Using Zerovalent Iron, Steven Comfort, Patrick J. Shea, Thomas A. Machacek, H. Gaber, B.-T. Oh

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Pesticide spills are common occurrences at agricultural cooperatives and farmsteads. When inadvertent spills occur, chemicals normally beneficial can become point sources of ground and surface water contamination. We report results from a field trial where approximately 765 m3 of soil from a metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl) acetamide] spill site was treated with zerovalent iron (Fe0). Preliminary laboratory experiments confirmed metolachlor dechlorination by Fe0 in aqueous solution and that this process could be accelerated by adding appropriate proportions of Al2(SO4)3 or acetic acid (CH3COOH). The field project was …

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Free-Ranging Deer In Nebraska, David G. Renter, Jan M. Sargeant, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Jeff D. Hoffmann, Jerry R. Gillespie

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In order to determine the prevalence and distribution of the human pathogen, Escherichia coli O157:H7, in free-ranging deer, hunters were asked to collect and submit fecal samples from deer harvested during a regular firearm season (14–22 November 1998). Prior to the season, 47% of the hunters with permits in the southeastern Nebraska (USA) study area indicated a willingness to participate in the study. Approximately 25% of successful hunters in the area submitted deer fecal samples. Escherichia coli O157:H7 was cultured from four (0.25%) of 1,608 total samples submitted. All of the fecal samples that were properly identified (1,426) and all …

Non-Destructive And Remote Sensing Techniques For Estimation Of Vegetation Status, Anatoly A. Gitelson, M. N. Merzlyak, Y. Zur, R. Stark, U. Gritz

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The goal of this work is to develop non-destructive techniques that can conveniently, rapidly and accurately assess crop physiological status and objectively evaluate plant responses to environmental factors, both natural and anthropogenic. High spectral resolution reflectance and absorption spectra of different and unrelated plant species were analyzed to determine spectral variability and information content in the visible and near-infrared spectrum at leaf and canopy levels. Techniques were developed to quantitatively retrieve chlorophyll, carotenoid and anthocyanin content from reflectance in a wide range of pigment content and composition.

Techniques for vegetation fraction retrieval those based on channels in visible range of …

Geochemical Evolution Of Ground Water In The Great Plains (Dakota) Aquifer Of Nebraska: Implications For The Management Of A Regional Aquifer System, David C. Gosselin, F. Edwin Harvey, Carol D. Frost Jan 2001

Geochemical Evolution Of Ground Water In The Great Plains (Dakota) Aquifer Of Nebraska: Implications For The Management Of A Regional Aquifer System, David C. Gosselin, F. Edwin Harvey, Carol D. Frost

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Great Plains (Dakota) aquifer system is one of the most extensive in North America, extending from the Arctic Circle to New Mexico, and underlies approximately 94% of Nebraska. In Nebraska, we do not have the physical ground water monitoring data at the scale that is necessary to manage ground water flow systems. However, first-order management strategies for this regional aquifer can be developed by understanding the geochemical evolution of the ground water. Using major-ion water chemistry data from 203 wells in 19 counties in eastern Nebraska, reconnaissance δ18O, δD, and δ87Sr data, and two geochemical …

On The Nonembeddability And Crossing Numbers Of Some Toroidal Graphs On The Klein Bottle, Adrian Riskin

Mathematics

We show that toroidal polyhedral maps with four or more disjoint homotopic noncontractiblecircuits are not embeddable on the projective plane and that toroidal polyhedral maps with -veor more disjoint homotopic noncontractible circuits are not embeddable on the Klein bottle. Wealso show that the Klein bottle crossing numbers ofCm×Cn(m6n) form=3;4;5;6 are 1,2,4,and 6, respectively, and give upper bounds for all other values ofn. These crossing numbersdispla yat ypical behavior in that the value depends onl yonminstead of on bothmandnas isthe case for the plane and projective plane.

Reactivity And Electronic Structure Of Aluminum Clusters: The Aluminum-Nitrogen System, B. D. Leskiw, A. W. Castleman Jr., C. Ashman, S. N. Khanna Jan 2001

Reactivity And Electronic Structure Of Aluminum Clusters: The Aluminum-Nitrogen System, B. D. Leskiw, A. W. Castleman Jr., C. Ashman, S. N. Khanna

Physics Publications

The stability of anionic aluminum–nitrogen clusters has been examined and Al2N−, Al3N−2,Al5N−2, Al6N−3, Al8N−3, and Al9N−2 are found to be particularly stable. Theoreticaldensity functional calculations on neutral and anionic AlnN (n=1–8) clusters were performed and the stability and reaction energetics with oxygen examined. Clusters requiring less than 5.7 eV to remove an electron and an Al atom are shown to be resistant to the reaction with oxygen.

Geometry, Electronic Structure, And Energetics Of Copper-Doped Aluminum Clusters, S. N. Khanna, C. Ashman, B. K. Rao, P. Jena

Physics Publications

Using density functional theory and generalized gradient approximation for exchange-correlation potential, we have calculated the equilibrium geometries and energetics of neutral and negatively charged AlnCu (n=11,12,13,14) clusters. Unlike the alkali atom-doped aluminum clusters in the same size range, the copper atom resides inside the aluminum cluster cage. Furthermore, the 3d and 4s energy levels of Cu hybridize with the valence electrons of Al causing a redistribution of the molecular orbital energy levels of the Aln clusters. However, this redistribution does not affect the magic numbers of AlnCu clusters that could be derived by assuming that Cu donates one electron to …

Electronic Structure And Chemical Bonding Of 3d-Metal Dimers Scx, X=Sc-Zn, G. L. Gutsev, P. Jena, B. K. Rao, S. N. Khanna Jan 2001

Electronic Structure And Chemical Bonding Of 3d-Metal Dimers Scx, X=Sc-Zn, G. L. Gutsev, P. Jena, B. K. Rao, S. N. Khanna

Physics Publications

The electronic and geometrical structures of the ground and excited states of the homonuclear Sc2, mixed ScTi, ScV, ScCr, ScMn, ScFe, ScCo, ScNi, ScCu, and ScZn 3d-metal dimers and their anions have been calculated using the density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation potential. The ground states of the neutral dimers are found to be 5Σ−u (Sc2), 6Σ+ (ScTi), 7Σ+ (ScV), 4Σ+ (ScCr), 3Σ+ (ScMn), 2Δ(ScFe), 1Σ+ (ScCo), 2Σ+ (ScNi), 3Δ(ScCu), and 4Σ+ (ScZn). A natural bond analysis reveals an antiferrimagnetic spin coupling in the ground states of ScCr, ScMn, and ScFe. This is due to the …

Energetics And Electronic Structure Of Carbon Doped Aluminum Clusters, B. K. Rao, P. Jena Jan 2001

Energetics And Electronic Structure Of Carbon Doped Aluminum Clusters, B. K. Rao, P. Jena

Physics Publications

The energetics and the electronic structure of AlnC clusters (n=3, 4, 5; 11, 12, 13) have been studied by a global optimization of their geometry without any symmetry constraint. The total energies of these clusters both in neutral and charged states are calculated using an all-electron basis and the generalized gradient approximation to the density functional theory. While Al4C and Al12C clusters share some characteristic features of closed shell structures, namely enhanced stability and low electron affinity compared to their neighboring sizes, their ionization potentials exhibit different behavior. These decrease steadily from Al3C to Al5C while that of Al12C is …
