An All-To-All Multicast Routing Protocol In A Wireless Ad-Hoc Network To Improve Channel Utilization, Zhong Hua Zhou May 2001

An All-To-All Multicast Routing Protocol In A Wireless Ad-Hoc Network To Improve Channel Utilization, Zhong Hua Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless Ad-hoc network has become more and more popular. Several different multicasting schemes for this type of network have been developed. But most of them are targeting a situation where the total number of senders is much less than the total number of receivers. This thesis analyzes different wireless communication patterns in ad hoc network, the trend for wireless communication and presents a new multicast scheme. It targets an ad-hoc network where all mobile hosts act as both senders and receivers. The proposed scheme in this thesis will reduce overheads by combining data packets that are destined for the same …

Natural History And Roosting Ecology Of The Eastern Pipistrelle, Pipistrellus Subflavus, Jacques Pierre Veilleux

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study concerning the natural history and roosting ecology of the eastern pipistrelle, Pipistrellus subtlavus, was conducted from 1997 to 2000, in southern Vigo County, Indiana. 111 Females began forming pre-maternity colonies during early May, and parturition began during late June. Pre-maternity colonies averaged 3.7 ± 1.9 individuals, and maternity colonies averaged 4.4 ± 2.4 individuals. Young pipistrelles first became volant during the third and fourth weeks of July. Pipistrelles were located in 59 roost trees. All roosts were located in foliage, either in clusters of dead leaves (n = 40) or in live foliage (n = 19). Oaks (Ouercus …

Integer Approximation Of Real Valued Preference Curves, Richard M. Antoine May 2001

Integer Approximation Of Real Valued Preference Curves, Richard M. Antoine

Theses and Dissertations

A primary challenge of the AFIT Mission Resource Value Assessment Tool is to approximate a given preference curve with integer valued mission ready resources. This thesis evaluated four candidate methods of accomplishing this approximation. The thesis evaluated the implementation of the integer estimation approximation from a purely mathematical perspective. The models were measured against six quality and error measurement standards: convergence on an endpoint, convergence on any interior integer points, characterization of the overall error between the sequence of integer coordinates and the real valued linear function and characterization of the error in each individual dimension of the problem space. …

An Investigation Into Justification And Hyphenation Methodologies In Quarkxpress And Adobe Indesign, Michael Stone May 2001

An Investigation Into Justification And Hyphenation Methodologies In Quarkxpress And Adobe Indesign, Michael Stone

Theses

Adobe's newest page layout program, InDesign, includes a "multi-line composing engine." This feature has been highlighted in presentations and preliminary literature about the program by Adobe. The claim being made by Adobe is that the multi-line composing method will produce visible improvements over traditional line-by-line justification methods, such as that employed by the current most-popular page layout program, QuarkXPress. Text produced using line-by-line justification methods tends to exhibit significant variances in interword spacing from one line to the next. Text often appears too loose or too tight in parts, and visual effects such as rivers of white space running through …

Quiet Rebellion? Explaining Nearly A Decade Of Declining Federal Drug Sentences, Frank O. Bowman Iii, Michael Heise May 2001

Quiet Rebellion? Explaining Nearly A Decade Of Declining Federal Drug Sentences, Frank O. Bowman Iii, Michael Heise

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This is the first of two articles, the second of which will appear in January 2002 edition of the Iowa Law Review, in which we seek an explanation for the little-noticed and hitherto unexamined fact that the average length of prison sentences imposed in federal court for narcotics violations has been declining steadily since 1991-92.

According to figures maintained by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, in the eight years between 1991 and 1999, the average federal drug sentence decreased from 95.7 months to 75.2 months, a drop of 22%, or nearly two years, per defendant. United States …

Integration Of A Statcom And Battery Energy Storage, Zhiping Yang, Shen Chen, Lin Zhang, Stan Atcitty, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The integration of an energy storage system, such as battery energy storage (BESS), into a FACTS device can provide dynamic decentralized active power capabilities and much needed flexibility for mitigating transmission level power flow problems. This paper introduces an integrated StatCom/BESS for the improvement of dynamic and transient stability and transmission capability; compare the performance of the different FACTS/BESS combinations, and provide experimental verification of the proposed controls on a scaled StatCom/BESS system

Constitutional Risks To Equal Protection In The Criminal Justice System, Edward K. Cheng May 2001

Constitutional Risks To Equal Protection In The Criminal Justice System, Edward K. Cheng

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Note has examined the consequences of a shift in the equal protection context - a move from a traditional particularized harm perspective to a constitutional risk perspective focused on systemic harms. It has also acknowledged the significant remedial difficulties associated with constitutional risk, but by focusing on discretion as the source of most equal protection risks, this Note has proposed a moderate doctrinal change: discretionary safeguards. To be sure, this Note leaves the project substantially incomplete. Constitutional risk's focus on statistical evidence requires careful discussion of the pitfalls judges face in this area and of how they can develop …

An Ethical Framework For Interpreting The United States Endangered Species Act, Cathryn M. Elgin May 2001

An Ethical Framework For Interpreting The United States Endangered Species Act, Cathryn M. Elgin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this study I argue that a holistic approach is better than an individualistic approach for interpreting the United States Endangered Species Act (ESA). I propose that the use of a holistic ethical framework, based on fundamental environmental philosophy, is better in that it more effectively fulfills the ESA's goals of species and ecosystem conservation. Holistic ethics is based on concern for a community as a whole, while individualistic ethics is based on concern for the individual. A holistic approach, I argue, is more beneficial to nature than is an individualistic approach or other non-holistic approaches. I set up basic …

Structure Attacks In Cryptographic Protocols, Karl Mahlburg May 2001

Structure Attacks In Cryptographic Protocols, Karl Mahlburg

HMC Senior Theses

Cryptographic protocols are in general difficult to analyze, and complicated attacks exposing security flaws have remained hidden years after a protocol is developed. Recently developed tools such as strand spaces and inductive logical proofs provide mechanical procedures for analyzing protocols. The key to these methods is that a generous upper bound on the activity of a malicious penetrator is often much easier to work with than a tighter bound. However, these formalizations make strong assumptions about the algebraic structure of the cryptosystem that are never met in a real application. In this work, we show that an extended form of …

Fractional Analogues In Graph Theory, Ari Nieh May 2001

Fractional Analogues In Graph Theory, Ari Nieh

HMC Senior Theses

Tait showed in 1878 that the Four Color Theorem is equivalent to being able to three-color the edges of any planar, three-regular, two-edge connected graph. Not surprisingly, this equivalent problem proved to be equally difficult. We consider the problem of fractional colorings, which resemble ordinary colorings but allow for some degree of cheating. Happily, it is known that every planar three-regular, two-edge connected graph is fractionally three-edge colorable. Is there an analogue to Tait’s Theorem which would allow us to derive the Fractional Four Color Theorem from this edge-coloring result?

Computational Evolutionary Linguistics, Tracy Vancort May 2001

Computational Evolutionary Linguistics, Tracy Vancort

HMC Senior Theses

Languages and species both evolve by a process of repeated divergences, which can be described with the branching of a phylogenetic tree or phylogeny. Taking advantage of this fact, it is possible to study language change using computational tree building techniques developed for evolutionary biology. Mathematical approaches to the construction of phylogenies fall into two major categories: character based and distance based methods. Character based methods were used in prior work in the application of phylogenetic methods to the Indo-European family of languages by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. Discussion of the limitations of character-based models leads to a …

The Interrater Reliability Of The Psychological Processing Checklist, John A. Nonnemacher May 2001

The Interrater Reliability Of The Psychological Processing Checklist, John A. Nonnemacher

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare thirty students' profiles under the Psychological Processing Checklist, a tool that attempts to locate the observable, measurable behaviors evident in a student's classroom performance that might be indicative of an emergent processing deficiency. Two individual instructors rated the same students, all chosen from two fifth grade classrooms in a Southern New Jersey public school, and the results were compared using correlation data. Significant correlations between the two profiles generated for each student, as measured by the Checklist, lent support for the Checklist as a reliable tool. It was hypothesized that the PPC …

Overview Of Acousto-Optic Bistability, Chaos, And Logical Applications, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Erol Sonmez

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

An overview is presented of the key results in the field of acousto-optic bistability in the past two decades. It is shown that the basic acousto-optic bistable device may be described as a nonlinear dynamical system which satisfies a quadratic map. Thereafter, details are presented of several analytical methods, computer modeling approaches, including the SPICE circuit modeling technique, and experiments that have been used to understand the phenomenon.

Extensions to logical and digital applications are also discussed.

Using Virtual Reality For Requirements Validation, Dejan Desovski May 2001

Using Virtual Reality For Requirements Validation, Dejan Desovski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Failures of high consequence systems are intolerable. Studies have shown that a significant percentage of safety problems can be traced back to errors in the specification. An important problem that arises during validation is how to include a domain expert in this process. Although the domain experts have exclusive knowledge about the system operation, they may not understand formalisms used for system specification.;Essential type of "evidence" of the correctness of the formalization process must be provided by human-based calculation. Human calculation can be significantly amplified by shifting from symbolic representation to graphical representations. This, in turn, provides an environment for …

Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding May 2001

Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding

Theses

This thesis project is concerned with the role that graphic designers have in making learning materials more effective. It is focused on the need for instructional materials to reflect current advances in cognitive psychology and our society's definition of intelligence. Most instructional materials today are outdated and ineffective. Some reasons are political, others are socio-economic, and some fall within the scope of the designed environment. Learning materials, especially textbooks, designed before the 1980's have been designed without standards, and at a time when intelligence was seen as a narrow list of abilities.

Responses of zooplankton, pelagic primary producers, planktonic bacteria, and CO2 exchange with the atmosphere were measured in four lakes with contrasting food webs under a range of nutrient enrichments during a seven-year period. Prior to enrichment, food webs were manipulated to create contrasts between piscivore dominance and planktivore dominance. Nutrient enrichments of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus exhibited ratios of N:P > 17:1, by atoms, to maintain P limitation. An unmanipulated reference lake, Paul Lake, revealed baseline variability but showed no trends that could confound the interpretation of changes in the nearby manipulated lakes. Herbivorous zooplankton of West Long Lake (piscivorous fishes) …
