Ecology Of Treeline Whitebark Pine (Pinus Albicaulis) Populations In Central Idaho: Successional Status, Recruitment, And Mortality, And A Spring Temperature Reconstruction From Whitebark Pine Tree Rings, Dana Lee Perkins May 2001

Ecology Of Treeline Whitebark Pine (Pinus Albicaulis) Populations In Central Idaho: Successional Status, Recruitment, And Mortality, And A Spring Temperature Reconstruction From Whitebark Pine Tree Rings, Dana Lee Perkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research investigated the successional status of treeline whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) populations on 14 stands in central Idaho and used empirical statistical models to determine the principal factors affecting recruitment and mortality. The longest lived whitebark pines from four additional high-elevation sites were used to develop a tree-ring chronology to reconstruct over 1,000 years of average April-May temperature.

The assessment of stand structures using size-frequency distributions generally provides evidence that treeline whitebark pine populations are currently self-sustaining in areas of low to nonexistent incidence of white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola). However the presence of …

On D0 Brane Polarization By Tidal Forces, Vatche Sahakian May 2001

On D0 Brane Polarization By Tidal Forces, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Gravitational tidal forces may induce polarization of D0-branes, in analogy to the same effects arising in the context of constant background gauge fields. Such phenomena can teach us about the correspondence between smooth curved spacetime and its underlying non-commutative structure. However, unlike polarization by gauge fields, the gravitational counterpart involves concerns regarding the classical stability of the corresponding polarized states. In this work, we study this issue with respect to the solutions presented in hepth0010237 and find that they are classically unstable. The instability however appears with intricate features with all but a few decay channels being lifted. Through a …

Discrete Spring Solitons, Donald Greenspan May 2001

Discrete Spring Solitons, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

A soliton is a local, traveling wave pulse. It is significant in a variety of unrelated areas, like studies of water waves, acoustic waves, electron transfer, gravity waves, plasmas, optics and condensed matter (Miura [4], Newell [5]). In this paper we will generate and study solitons in a new context, that is, from the point of view of discrete string motion in the XY plane. Our approach enables one to elucidate the complexities of soliton interactions easily using only a scientific personal computer and velocity profiles. Detailed examples are presented and displayed graphically.

A Geometric Inequality For Convex Polygons, Mostafa Ghandehari May 2001

A Geometric Inequality For Convex Polygons, Mostafa Ghandehari

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

Consider a regular polygon with vertices P1, P2, , Pn. Assume P is an interior point. Let [see pdf for notation] denote the Euclidean distance from P to Pi, i = 1, ...., n. Let A denote the area of the polygon. It is shown that [see pdf for notation] special cases of the above inequality are proved for some nonregular convex polygons. An example is given to show that the above inequality is not true for a general convex polygon.

Historical And Contemporary Distributions Of Aquatic Mollusks In The Upper Conasauga River System Of Georgia And Tennessee, Robert Ryan Evans

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Conasauga River, an upper Coosa River tributary, was historically one of the most diverse rivers within the Mobile basin drainage for freshwater mollusks. The Conasauga River historically supported 37 species of unionids (Bivalvia: Unionidae), 11 species of prosobranch gastropods (Mollusca: Gastropoda), and 3 species of sphaerid (Bivalvia: Sphaeridae) clams. I collected records from several museums ranging from 1914 to 1990 to chronicle the historical diversity of the Conasauga River system, and conducted a contemporary survey to compare changes in species distributions and richness over the twentieth century. During this study, a total of203 collections were made in the mainstem …

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Anion-yield spectroscopy using x rays is shown to be a selective probe of molecular core-level processes, providing unique experimental verification of shape resonances. For CO, partial anion and cation yields are presented for photon energies near the C K edge. The O- yield exhibits features above threshold related only to doubly excited states, in contrast to cation yields which also exhibit pronounced structure due to the well-known σ* shape resonance. Because the shape resonance is completely suppressed for O-, anion spectroscopy thus constitutes a highly selective probe, yielding information unobtainable with absorption or electron spectroscopy.

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Presentations

The paper suggests that fuzzy logic controllers present a computationally efficient and robust alternative to conventional controllers. The paper presents two possible structures for the distributed fuzzy logic controller of a single-link flexible manipulator. A linear quadratic regulator method is used to prove the effectiveness of fuzzy logic controllers.

Design Of Fuzzy Logic Controllers For Optimal Performance, Mohamed Trabia May 2001

Design Of Fuzzy Logic Controllers For Optimal Performance, Mohamed Trabia

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Presentations

While fuzzy logic controllers are generally robust, the performance of a system whose behavior is not well understood, or that has a large number of coupled inputs and outputs, may be less than optimal. In this paper, nonlinear programming techniques are used to improve the performance of a fuzzy logic controller for navigating an autonomous vehicle.

Image Reconstruction Using Data-Dependent Triangulation, Thomas W. Sederberg, Xiaohua Yu, Bryan S. Morse May 2001

Image Reconstruction Using Data-Dependent Triangulation, Thomas W. Sederberg, Xiaohua Yu, Bryan S. Morse

Faculty Publications

Image reconstruction based on data-dependent triangulation with new cost functions and optimization can create higher quality images than traditional bilinear or bicubic spline reconstruction. The article presents a novel method for image reconstruction using a piecewise linear intensity surface whose elements don't generally align with the coordinate axes. This method is based on the technique of data-dependent triangulation (DDT) that N. Dyn et al. (1990) introduced and has proven capable of producing more pleasing reconstructions than axis-aligned methods.

Interpolating Implicit Surfaces From Scattered Surface Data Using Compactly Supported Radial Basis Functions, Bryan S. Morse, David T. Chen, Penny Rheingans, Kalpathi Subramanian, Terry S. Yoo

Faculty Publications

We describe algebraic methods for creating implicit surfaces using linear combinations of radial basis interpolants to form complex models from scattered surface points. Shapes with arbitrary topology are easily represented without the usual interpolation or aliasing errors arising from discrete sampling. These methods were first applied to implicit surfaces by Savchenko, et al. and later developed independently by Turk and O'Brien as a means of performing shape interpolation. Earlier approaches were limited as a modeling mechanism because of the order of the computational complexity involved. We explore and extend these implicit interpolating methods to make them suitable for systems of …

In today’s Internet, demand is increasing for guarantees of speed and efficiency. Current routers are very limited in the type and quantity of observed data they can provide, making it difficult for providers to maximize utilization without the risk of degraded throughput. This research uses statistical data currents provided by router vendors to estimate the impact of changes in network configuration on the probability of link overflow. This allows service providers to calculate in advance, the effect of grooming on a network, eliminating the conservative trial-and-error approach normally used. These predictions are made using Large Deviation Theory, which focuses on …

A Surface Insulator-To-Conductor Phase Transition In Colossal Magnetoresistive Manganese Perovskites Thin Films, C.N. Borca, Bo Xu, Takashi Komesu, Hae-Kyung Jeong, Sy-Hwang Liou, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We have observed a distinct surface phase transition for an important class of colossal magnetoresistive materials, La0.65D0.35MnO3 (with D = Sr, Pb) occurring in a surface layer compositionally different from the bulk. The surface phase transition occurs around 240 K compared to 350 K for the bulk and is fundamentally different. In the bulk, a ferromagnetic metal to paramagnetic ‘bad metal’ occurs, while the lower-temperature surface transition is from an n-type (in case of La0.65Sr0.35MnO3) or a p-type (in case of La0.65Pb0.35MnO3 …

Rewriting Near V. Minnesota: Creating A Complete Definition Of Prior Restraint, Michael I. Meyerson

Mercer Law Review

The Supreme Court's opinion in Near v. Minnesota was both a major step on the road to free expression and a missed opportunity. It represented the first time a law was struck down as violating the First Amendment's guarantee of free expression. Moreover, it placed the concept of "prior restraint" at the forefront of the theory of free expression. As one scholar noted: "Since the 1931 release of the Supreme Court's opinion in Near v. Minnesota, the doctrine of prior restraint has been an essential element of first amendment jurisprudence."

Unfortunately, the Court neither defined prior restraint, nor explained precisely …
