Seasonal Patterns Of Photosynthesis In Douglas Fir Seedlings During The Third And Fourth Year Of Exposure To Elevated Co2 And Temperature, James D. Lewis, Melissa S. Lucash, David M. Olszyk, David T. Tingey

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The interactive effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 and temperature on seasonal patterns of photosynthesis in Douglas fir (Psuedotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seedlings were examined. Seedlings were grown in sunlit chambers controlled to track either ambient (~400 p.p.m.) CO2 or ambient +200 p.p.m. CO2, and either ambient temperature or ambient +4 °C. Light-saturated net photosynthetic rates were measured approximately monthly over a 21 month period. Elevated CO2 increased net photosynthetic rates by an average of 21% across temperature treatments during both the 1996 hydrologic year, the third year of exposure, and the 1997 hydrologic year. Elevated …

Pattern Recognition In Software Engineering Trend Adapting, Dapeng Chen May 2001

Pattern Recognition In Software Engineering Trend Adapting, Dapeng Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Whether and when to adapt to certain software engineering trends are difficult questions to be answered by many decision-makers. The main reasons are due to the fact that evolution of software engineering trends itself is determined by various factors, many of which come from the fields outside of the software technology, thus hard to predict. So it is even harder to estimate the cost and benefit when adapting to certain trends. This paper is intended to study ways to decrease the risk involved in such decision making processes, by developing a pattern from past software engineering trends. While the pattern …

Metaphysical Detectives And Postmodern Spaces, Or The Case Of The Missing Boundaries, Richard A. Swope May 2001

Metaphysical Detectives And Postmodern Spaces, Or The Case Of The Missing Boundaries, Richard A. Swope

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Taking as its point of departure Henri Lefebvre's contention that "(Social) space is a (social) product," my dissertation explores the contemporary American novels of Pynchon, Acker, Reed, Auster, DeLillo, and McElroy as well as the two recent films Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor and their dramatization of the production of twentieth-century social space. I approach these works as metaphysical detective stories which evoke the classic detective figure only to frustrate his impulse to solve and contain. Following Foucault's contention that "space is fundamental to any exercise of power," I suggest that the detective figure is significant to an understanding …

Message Sequence Chart Specifications With Cross Verification, Timothy Shawn Boles May 2001

Message Sequence Chart Specifications With Cross Verification, Timothy Shawn Boles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Current software specification verification methods are usually performed within the context of the specification method. There is little cross verification, pitting one type of specification against another, taking place. The most common techniques involve syntax checks across specifications or doing specification transformations and running verification within the new context. Since viewpoints of a system are different even within programming teams we concentrate on producing an efficient way to run cross verification on specifications, particularly specifications written with Message Sequence Charts and State Transition Diagrams.;In this work an algorithm is proposed in which all conditional MSCs are transformed into an algebraic …

Processing And Characterization Of Contacts On Mbe-Grown Gallium Nitride, Carlo Requiao Da Cunha May 2001

Processing And Characterization Of Contacts On Mbe-Grown Gallium Nitride, Carlo Requiao Da Cunha

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gallium nitride, a III-V compound semiconductor, is a good candidate for applications such as blue laser diodes and power devices due to its wide bandgap. One of the main challenges related to this compound is the growth of high quality crystals. If crystals with high level of purity are grown, the carrier concentration is therefore low, and the resulting high resistivity of the bulk imposes some difficulties for capacitance-related measurements. This thesis deals with the problem of processing and characterization of contacts on highly resistive materials such as unintentionally doped n-type gallium nitride. The ideal electrical model of a depletion …

J. Morgan Kousser, professor of history and social science at the California Institute of Technology, is an unusual academic. He enjoys the respect of two quite different groups - historians and civil rights litigators. As a historian, Kousser has written a number of important works on the American South in the tradition of his mentor, C. Vann Woodward, including a foundational book on southern political history, The Shaping of Southern Politics: Suffrage Restriction and the Establishment of the One-Party South, 1880-1910. Many of his writings have become seminal texts among election law scholars. Kousser has also used his historical skills …

Making The Familiar Conventional Again, Steven L. Winter May 2001

Making The Familiar Conventional Again, Steven L. Winter

Michigan Law Review

In 1984, Gerald López published his groundbreaking and still remarkable Lay Lawyering, employing then-recent developments in cognitive science to reexamine and reconfigure basic questions of law and legal reasoning. Three years later, Charles Lawrence's The Id, the Ego, and Equal Protection: Reckoning with Unconscious Racism used insights from cognitive and Freudian psychology to probe the problem of racism and the inadequacy of the law's response. George Lakoff's Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things appeared that same year. It was followed by a series of articles in which I examined a range of legal and theoretical issues in light of the new …

An Analysis Of Key Leadership Behaviors Of The Principal In A High -Performing Elementary School Serving Mexican American Children In South Texas, Alda T. Benavides May 2001

An Analysis Of Key Leadership Behaviors Of The Principal In A High -Performing Elementary School Serving Mexican American Children In South Texas, Alda T. Benavides

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study is based on the theoretical framework that defines leadership as an influence process, one that depends on the extent to which people eventually perceive leadership as a quality someone possesses and as a result of that perception, consent to be led (Greenfield, 1998). Leadership is the process of being perceived as a leader (Lord and Maher, 1993). Doing good work at one's school and being seen to do such work is likely to be the most powerful strategy for positively influencing teachers' perceptions of one's leadership. This study expands on the theory that it is what you do …

Quantitative Analysis Of Domain Testing Effectiveness., Narendra Koneru May 2001

Quantitative Analysis Of Domain Testing Effectiveness., Narendra Koneru

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The criticality of the applications modeled by the real-time software places stringent requirements on software quality before deploying into real use. Though automated test tools can be used to run a large number of tests efficiently, the functionality of any test tool is not complege without providing a means for analyzing the test results to determine potential problem sub-domains and sub-domains that need to be covered, and estimating the reliability of the modeled system.

This thesis outlines a solution strategy and implementation of that strategy for deriving quantitative metrics from domain testing of real-time control software tested via simulation. The …

Scattering Of Elastic Waves In Heterogeneous Media With Local Isotropy, Joseph A. Turner, Phanidhar Anugonda May 2001

Scattering Of Elastic Waves In Heterogeneous Media With Local Isotropy, Joseph A. Turner, Phanidhar Anugonda

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The scattering of elastic waves in heterogeneous media is discussed. Explicit expressions are derived for the attenuation of longitudinal and transverse elastic waves in terms of the statistics of the density and Lame´ parameter fluctuations. The derivation is based upon diagrammatic methods with the problem posed in terms of the Dyson equation. The Dyson equation is solved for the mean field response. The results are given here in a straightforward manner, in which the attenuations reduce to simple integrals on the unit circle. The medium is assumed statistically homogeneous and statistically isotropic. This model, with assumed local isotropic properties, is …

Intralimb Coordination Following Obstacle Clearance During Running: The Effect Of Obstacle Height, Nikolaos Stergiou, Shane D. Scholten, Jody L. Jensen, Daniel Blanke

Journal Articles

The purpose of this study was to investigate the different coordination strategies used following obstacle clearance during running. Ten subjects ran over a level surface and over obstacles of six different heights (10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20 and 22.5% of their standing height). Analysis based upon the dynamical systems theory (DST) was used and the phasing relationships between lower extremity segments were examined. The results demonstrated that the increasing obstacle height elicited behavioral changes. The foot and the leg became more independent in their actions, while the leg and the thigh strengthened their already stable relationship. The 15% obstacle height …

Cigarette Smokers As Job Risk Takers, Joni Hersch, W. Kip Viscusi May 2001

Cigarette Smokers As Job Risk Takers, Joni Hersch, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Using a large data set, the authors find that smokers select riskier jobs, but receive lower total wage compensation for risk than do nonsmokers. This finding is inconsistent with conventional models of compensating differentials. The authors develop a model in which worker risk preferences and job safety performance lead to smokers facing a flatter market offer curve than nonsmokers. The empirical results support the theoretical model. Smokers are injured more often controlling for their job's objective risk and are paid less for these risks of injury. Smokers and nonsmokers, in effect, are segmented labor market groups with different preferences and …

PkA Determination Of Enzyme Bound Coenzyme M With Epoxyalkane: Com Transferase, Matthew Stephen Mciff May 2001

PkA Determination Of Enzyme Bound Coenzyme M With Epoxyalkane: Com Transferase, Matthew Stephen Mciff

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Epoxide metabolism in the aerobic bacterium Xanthobacter strain Py2 proceeds by a coenzyme M (2-mercaptoethanesulfonic acid), NADPH, and NAD+ dependent carboxylation reaction that form beta keto acids as products. Epoxide carboxylase, the enzyme catalyzing this reaction, was resolved into four protein components that are required for functional reconstitiution of epoxide carboxylase activity. Component I, the first step in epoxide carboxylation, catalyzes the conversion of R and S-epoxypropane into Rand S-hydroxypropyl-coenzyme M respectively. This reaction consists of an epoxide ring opening, nucleophilic addition of coenzyme M, and oxygen reduction. Coenzyme M, a compound previously found only in the methanogenic Archaea, …

New Approaches To Processing Nanoparticles And Nanostructures, Mathew M. Maye

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The study of nanoparticles is an emerging field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. A challenging issue is how deliberate tailoring and processing of the nanoscale materials can lead to well defined and functional nanostructures. In this thesis, we explore new strategies of nanoscale design and processing to address the challenge.

A core-shell chemical processing route towards fabrication of functional composite nanomaterials with defined sizes, shapes, compositions and surface properties is demonstrated. New findings of an investigation of thermally-activated core-shell reactivities of nanoparticles in solutions are described. Gold nanoparticles of ~2-nm core size with thiolate monolayer encapsulation were chosen as a model …
