Computational Simulation Of Fluid Dynamics In Thin Films, Anand Patil May 2001

Computational Simulation Of Fluid Dynamics In Thin Films, Anand Patil

HMC Senior Theses

We investigate the formation of droplets in a thin liquid film on a solid substrate due to the combined action of surface tension and van der Waals forces. Current models for droplet formation assume that droplets have a shallow profile. By removing that assumption and numerically solving for stable droplet profiles, we have modelled droplets that separate from the substrate on which they sit.

The Approximate Inclusion Of Triple Excitations In Eom-Type Quantum Chemical Methods, Mike Rust May 2001

The Approximate Inclusion Of Triple Excitations In Eom-Type Quantum Chemical Methods, Mike Rust

HMC Senior Theses

In non-relativistic quantum mechanics, stationary states of molecules and atoms are described by eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian operator. For one-electron systems, such as the hydrogen atom, the solution of the eigenvalue problem (Schro ̈dinger’s equation) is straightforward, and the results show excellent agreement with experiment. Despite this success, the multi electron problem corresponding to virtually every system of interest in chemistry has resisted attempts at exact solution. Perhaps the most popular method for obtaining approximate, yet very accurate results for the ground states of molecules is the coupled cluster approximation. Coupled cluster methods move beyond the simple, average field Hartree-Fock …

Estimation Of Forest Stand Parameters And Application In Classification And Change Detection Of Forest Cover Types In The Brazilian Amazon Basin, Dengsheng Lu May 2001

Estimation Of Forest Stand Parameters And Application In Classification And Change Detection Of Forest Cover Types In The Brazilian Amazon Basin, Dengsheng Lu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on measurement of forest stand parameters using remote sensing which is applied to classification and change detection of tropical successional and mature forests in selected areas in the Brazilian Amazon Basin. Three study areas, Altamira, Bragantina, and Pedras, each with different biophysical environments, were selected for this research. Previous research has indicated that relationships between selected stand parameters and remotely sensed data are not clearly understood, especially in tropical areas. Rarely has remote sensing research been successfully conducted in quantitative estimation of forest stand parameters (e.g. biomass) and identification of vegetation growth stages. In this research, atmospherically …

Cluster Computing In The Classroom: Topics, Guidelines, And Experiences, Amy Apon, Rajkumar Buyya, Hai Jin, Jens Mache

Publications

With the progress of research on cluster computing, more and more universities have begun to offer various courses covering cluster computing. A wide variety of content can be taught in these courses. Because of this, a difficulty that arises is the selection of appropriate course material. The selection is complicated by the fact that some content in cluster computing is also covered by other courses such as operating systems, networking, or computer architecture. In addition, the background of students enrolled in cluster computing courses varies. These aspects of cluster computing make the development of good course material difficult. Combining our …

Results Of A Rapid Appraisal Study: Agricultural Producers’ Perceptions Of Drought Vulnerability And Mitigation—Howard County, Nebraska, Cody L. Knutson, Matthew L. Blomstedt, Kara Slaughter

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

Drought is the leading natural disaster in the United States in terms of monetary losses. The National Research Council (1995) estimates that drought costs the United States an average of $6–8 billion per year. Because of these losses and the great effects of drought on many citizens’ quality of life, drought planning is gaining widespread support in the United States. However, U.S. drought planning within the agricultural sector has historically focused on response measures that help producers, primarily farmers, deal with and recover from drought. It has been found that these often ad-hoc drought responses are very expensive and do …

Droughts And Dew Bean Productivity In Northwestern Arid Rajasthan, India, Pratap Narain, R. S. Singh, D. Kumar

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

Arid ecosystems constitute an important part of the world’s dry climates. The Indian arid zone is characterized by a harsh and fragile system, which influences the productivity (both quantitative and qualitative) and socioeconomic status of the inhabitants. The study discussed in this article was conducted in the Bikaner region, which is one of the most drought-prone districts of Rajasthan (Figure 1). Annual rainfall in the district is 268 mm, of which 85% occurs during the southwest summer monsoon (July–September). The region is known to experience extreme variations in diurnal and seasonal temperatures and high wind velocity, particularly during summers, associated …

Winter Drought In Iran: Associations With Enso, M. J. Nazemosadat

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

The Islamic Republic of Iran (Figure 1) has an area of 1,648,000 km2 and a population of 65 million people (1995 estimate). The country has arid and semiarid climates and the occurrence of rainfall is unreliable, with a coefficient of variation as high as 70%. The average annual precipitation over the country is around 250 mm. Two mountain ridges, the Alborz and Zagros (Figure 1), which run east and southeast from the northwest corner of the country, play an influential role in determining the amount and spatial distribution of rainfall. The peaks of Alborz and Zagros are about 5,700 …

Back To The Drawing Board: Envisioning A Gender-Inclusive Introductory Technology Course, Eric Brewer May 2001

Back To The Drawing Board: Envisioning A Gender-Inclusive Introductory Technology Course, Eric Brewer

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

In this new millennium technology permeates everything we do and see. You cannot work, act, or interact in society without using technology. Who is creating and working with this technology? According to Clark (1990) less than 30% of these technology users are female. Unfortunately, this is mirrored in secondary education as well. For example, here are the enrollment statistics for my drafting and engineering classes for the past four years: 1997-1998 School year - 0 females; 1998-1999 School year - 1 female; 1999-2000 School year - 2 females; 2000-2001 School year - 2 females. Since I have roughly 70 - …

Geometric Realization And K-Theoretic Decomposition Of C*-Algebras, Claude Schochet May 2001

Geometric Realization And K-Theoretic Decomposition Of C*-Algebras, Claude Schochet

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

Suppose that A is a separable C*-algebra and that G∗ is a (graded) subgroup of the ℤ/2-graded group K∗(A). Then there is a natural short exact sequence

0 → G∗ → K∗(A) → K∗(A)/G∗ → 0.

In this note we demonstrate how to geometrically realize this sequence at the level of C*-algebras. As a result, we KK-theoretically decompose A as

0 → A ⊗ [cursive]K → Aƒ → SAt → 0

where K∗(At) is the torsion subgroup of …

Automatic Detection Of Outliers In Multibeam Echo Sounding Data, Tianhang Hou, Lloyd C. Huff, Larry A. Mayer May 2001

Automatic Detection Of Outliers In Multibeam Echo Sounding Data, Tianhang Hou, Lloyd C. Huff, Larry A. Mayer

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The data volumes produced by new generation multibeam systems are very large, especially for shallow water systems. Results from recent multibeam surveys indicate that the ratio of the field survey time, to the time used in interactive editing through graphical editing tools, is about 1:1. An important reason for the large amount of processing time is that users subjectively decide which soundings are outliers. There is an apparent need for an automated approach for detecting outliers that would reduce the extensive labor and obtain consistent results from the multibeam data cleaning process, independent of the individual that has processed the …

Nucleation Of Water And Methanol Droplets On Cations And Anions: The Sign Preference, K.J. Oh, G.T. Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng May 2001

Nucleation Of Water And Methanol Droplets On Cations And Anions: The Sign Preference, K.J. Oh, G.T. Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The barrier height to cation- and anion-induced nucleation to produce water and methanol droplets are calculated by means of an umbrella-sampling Monte Carlo method. The computer simulation corroborates the century-old finding of Wilson that the anion is a better nucleator to produce water droplets than the cation having the same magnitude of charge, even without the presence of external electric field. The simulation also shows that the cation is a better nucleator to produce methanol droplets than the anion.

Error Estimation Of Bathymetric Grid Models Derived From Historic And Contemporary Data Sets, Martin Jakobsson, Brian R. Calder, Larry A. Mayer, Andy Armstrong May 2001

Error Estimation Of Bathymetric Grid Models Derived From Historic And Contemporary Data Sets, Martin Jakobsson, Brian R. Calder, Larry A. Mayer, Andy Armstrong

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The past century has seen remarkable advances in technologies associated with positioning and the measurement of depth. Lead lines have given way to single beam echo sounders, which in turn are being replaced by multibeam sonars and other means of remotely and rapidly collecting dense bathymetric datasets. Sextants were replaced by radio navigation, then transit satellite, GPS and now differential GPS. With each new advance comes tremendous improvement in the accuracy and resolution of the data we collect. Given these changes and given the vastness of the ocean areas we must map, the charts we produce are mainly compilations of …

Effectiveness Of Earthen Escape Ramps In Reducing Big Game Mortality In Utah, Mary L. Hammer May 2001

Effectiveness Of Earthen Escape Ramps In Reducing Big Game Mortality In Utah, Mary L. Hammer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One-way escape gates and earthen escape ramps are structures used to enable deer to exit the highway right-of-way along fenced roads. I compared the use of one-way escape gates and earthen escape ramps by mule deer on two highways in Utah to determine if deer exhibited a preference for either structure. Results showed that earthen escape ramps were used by mule deer 8-11 times more frequently than one-way gates. Highway mortality data suggest that the installation of the escape ramps likely reduced mortality of mule deer in both study locations, because we could not attribute reductions in mortality to decreased …

Controls On Channel Organization And Morphology In A Glaciated Basin In The Uinta Mountains, Utah, Betty E. Paepke May 2001

Controls On Channel Organization And Morphology In A Glaciated Basin In The Uinta Mountains, Utah, Betty E. Paepke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The organization and morphology of Middle Fork Sheep Creek and South Fork Sheep Creek, two mountain streams in the upper Sheep Creek basin, are controlled by the spatial distribution of glacial moraines. Both channels are organized into a reoccurring sequence of steep-gradient reaches changing downstream to low-gradient reaches. Steep-gradient reaches are located where the channels flow through moraine s. Low-gradient reaches are located in meadows downstream of the steep-gradient reaches and immediately upstream of the next moraine. Knickpoints in the longitudinal profiles of both streams coincide with the location of moraines.

Large boulder s, beyond the size transportable by the …

Establishing Reinforcing Properties In Neutral Stimuli Through Observational Learning With Children, Andrew Waine Gardner May 2001

The purpose of this study was to observe and analyze the factors that lead to a child's increase in responding to a previously neutral stimulus after observing another child's behavior and consequences in the same setting. The effects of five video presentations on rate of button-pressing responses were observed across four students. Rates of button-pressing behavior on an FR3 schedule of reinforcement were collected for each student using a computer and a metal apparatus with two flat push buttons. Each student completed two baseline phases to establish neutrality of stimuli, and viewed a total of five video presentations. Each video …

Effects Of High Ammonium/Nitrate Ratios On Nitrification And Growth Of Wheat In Hydroponics, Dawn J. Muhlestein May 2001

Effects Of High Ammonium/Nitrate Ratios On Nitrification And Growth Of Wheat In Hydroponics, Dawn J. Muhlestein

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nitrogen is the only plant nutrient taken up as both a cation (NH4+) and anion (NO3-). Nitrate is considered the "safe" form of N and NH/ is generally thought to be toxic, especially at high levels. High NH4+/NO3- ratios are thought to be toxic because they result in a rhizosphere pH low enough to damage root membranes, induced cation deficiencies, and build-up of NH3 caused by delayed NH/ assimilation. These factors can be minimized in hydroponic culture. The objective of these studies was to quantify the effects of high …

Latino Children's Kindergarten Entry: Views Of Parents And Teachers, Shanda Stephens May 2001

Latino Children's Kindergarten Entry: Views Of Parents And Teachers, Shanda Stephens

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examined parental and teacher expectations of kindergarten readiness of Latino children. The perceptions of Latino mothers, Latino fathers, and kindergarten teachers were analyzed and compared. Specifically, parents' and teachers' responses were compared in three areas: perceptions of what parents can do to prepare children for kindergarten, priorities for requisite kindergarten entry skills, and rankings of the importance of specified skills to be emphasized in kindergarten. Differences between kindergarten teachers' expectations for nonnative English-speaking children and native English-speaking children were also examined.

The parent sample consisted of 35 Latino mother/father pairs. All were parents of children who entered kindergarten …
