The Relationship Between Social And Emotional Intelligence In Children, Shannon Herring May 2001

The Relationship Between Social And Emotional Intelligence In Children, Shannon Herring

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The relationship between social and emotional intelligence was investigated. The study sample consisted of 31 females and 28 males who were between the ages of 9 and 12. The student participants completed the Social Skills Rating System-Student Form (SSRS), which assesses social competence, and the Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version (EQ-i:YV), which measures emotional intelligence. Parents of the children also completed the Social Skills Rating System-Parent Form for comparison purposes. Both forms of the SSRS yielded statistically significant correlations with the EQ-i:YV. The results indicate that the instruments designed to assess emotional intelligence and social intelligence were highly related. The …

Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Three-Dimensional Reconstructions Of The Brain Of A Fetal Common Dolphin, Delphinus Delphis, Lori Marino, Timothy L. Murphy, Lyad Gozal, John I. Johnson May 2001

Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Three-Dimensional Reconstructions Of The Brain Of A Fetal Common Dolphin, Delphinus Delphis, Lori Marino, Timothy L. Murphy, Lyad Gozal, John I. Johnson

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

To demonstrate the kinds of data that can be obtained non-destructively and non-invasively from preserved museum specimens using modern imaging technology the head region of a whole body fetal specimen of the common dolphin, Delphinus delphis, aged 8–9 months post-conception, was scanned using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Series of scans were obtained in coronal, sagittal and horizontal planes. A digital three-dimensional reconstruction of the whole brain was prepared from the coronal series of scans. Sectional areas and three-dimensional volumes were obtained of the cerebral hemispheres and of the brainstemplus-cerebellum. Neuroanatomical features identified in the scans include the major sulci of …

Towards Regional Assimilation Of Lagrangian Data: The Lagrangian Form Of The Shallow Water Reduced Gravity Model And Its Inverse, J. L. Mead, A. F. Bennett May 2001

Towards Regional Assimilation Of Lagrangian Data: The Lagrangian Form Of The Shallow Water Reduced Gravity Model And Its Inverse, J. L. Mead, A. F. Bennett

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Variational data assimilation for Lagrangian geophysical fluid dynamics is introduced. Lagrangian coordinates add numerical difficulties into an already difficult subject, but also offer certain distinct advantages over Eulerian coordinates. First, float position and depth are defined by linear measurement functionals. Second, Lagrangian or ‘comoving’ open domains are conveniently expressed in Lagrangian coordinates. The attraction of such open domains is that they lead to well-posed prediction problems [Bennett and Chua (1999)] and hence efficient inversion algorithms. Eulerian and Lagrangian solutions of the inviscid forward problem in a doubly periodic domain, with North Atlantic mesoscales, are compared and found to be in …

Switching Between Intensive And Extensive Searching In Predators Of Heterogeneously Distributed Prey, Zy Biesinger May 2001

Switching Between Intensive And Extensive Searching In Predators Of Heterogeneously Distributed Prey, Zy Biesinger

Biology

Many predators of patchily distributed prey are thought to increase their searching efficiency by alternating between extensive and intensive searching behavior. To test the effects of predator satiation and prey density on a ladybird's choice of searching mode, I performed experiments in which larvae of different hunger levels experienced different prey encounter rates. Using traditional measures, I found a beetle's satiation level to have no effect. The prey encounter rate had an effect on two of three traditional measures. Less traditional methods, fractal dimension analysis and Fourier slope analysis, supported the conclusions obtained using traditional measures. Analysis of movement patterns …

Mesospheric Planetary Waves Atnorthern Hemisphere Fall Equinox, H. L. Liu, R. G. Roble, Michael J. Taylor, W. R. Pendleton Jr. May 2001

Mesospheric Planetary Waves Atnorthern Hemisphere Fall Equinox, H. L. Liu, R. G. Roble, Michael J. Taylor, W. R. Pendleton Jr.

All Physics Faculty Publications

Northern hemisphere planetary waves are strong in the winter and weak in the summer, and they go through a fast transition around equinox. This transition is studied here using NCAR Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere‐Electrodynamics general circulation model (TIME‐GCM) simulations with 1997 National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) analysis. The planetary wave variability during the transition and its effect on the temperature and winds in the mesosphere are examined. The simulated planetary wave structure agrees with climatological studies, and the fast transition of the planetary waves is captured by the model. The wave variability produces large temperature changes in the upper atmosphere above local …

Developing Scoring Methods For A Non-Additive Psychometric Measure Of Social Skills/Interpersonal Competence, Angela Kurle May 2001

Developing Scoring Methods For A Non-Additive Psychometric Measure Of Social Skills/Interpersonal Competence, Angela Kurle

HMC Senior Theses

For my senior thesis, I am planning to blend my mathematical studies with my second field of study, psychology. In particular, to develop and test various scoring methods for a multidimensional, psychometric measure of social skills/competence. I would work with the Social Skills Inventory (see below) and an existing data set, using statistical modelling to design a more representative total score measure. The current total score measure does not appear to take into account balances and value weights of the six inventory items.

Combinatorial Explanations Of Known Harmonic Identities, Greg Preston May 2001

Combinatorial Explanations Of Known Harmonic Identities, Greg Preston

HMC Senior Theses

We seek to discover combinatorial explanations of known identities involving harmonic numbers. Harmonic numbers do not readily lend themselves to combinatorial interpretation, since they are sums of fractions, and combinatorial arguments involve counting whole objects. It turns out that we can transform these harmonic identities into new identities involving Stirling numbers, which are much more apt to combinatorial interpretation. We have proved four of these identities, the first two being special cases of the third.

Measuring Electron Gas Relaxation In Gold Through Second Harmonic Generation, Paul Sangiorgio May 2001

Measuring Electron Gas Relaxation In Gold Through Second Harmonic Generation, Paul Sangiorgio

HMC Senior Theses

In a thermally equilibrated system, electron behavior in a metal is described by the Fermi-Dirac equation. With ultrafast lasers, electrons can be excited into temporary distributions which are not described by the Fermi-Dirac equation and are therefore not at a well-defined temperature. These nonthermal distributions quickly equilibrate through two primary processes: electron-electron scattering and electron-phonon scattering. In most situations, these effects are unnoticeable, since they are completed within 5 ps. A probabilistic numerical model for electron-electron scattering is presented. The model is robust, scaleable, and requires only one parameter. The success of the model suggests future work on a similar …

Mixing In Curved Pipes, Marco Latini May 2001

Mixing In Curved Pipes, Marco Latini

HMC Senior Theses

Over the previous summer I studied mixing of a passive tracer by flow in a straight cylindrical pipe, under the supervision of prof. Bernoff. The mixing process can be thought of as the successive action of advection by the fluid flow and diffusion modeled by random walks. With this method we were able to distinguish three different regimes. For short times, diffusion is more relevant than advection and we observed a Gaussian longitudinal distribution of the concentration. In an intermediate regime, advection by the shear is dominant over longitudinal diffusion and we observed a distinctively asymmetric distribution which spread much …

Super-Symmetric Three-Cycles In String Theory, Ian Weiner May 2001

Super-Symmetric Three-Cycles In String Theory, Ian Weiner

HMC Senior Theses

We determine several families of so-called associative 3-dimensional manifolds in R7. Such manifolds are of interest because associative 3-cycles in G2 holonomy manifolds such as R6 × S1, whose universal cover is R7, are candidates for representations of fundamental particles in String Theory. We apply the classic results of Harvey and Lawson to find 3-manifolds which are graphs of functions f : Im H → H and which are invariant under a particular 1-parameter subgroup of G2, the automorphism group of the Cayley numbers, O. Systems of PDEs are derived and solved, some special cases of a classic theorem of …

Park And Ride Feasibility Analysis For The Evansville, Indiana, Metropolitan Area, Brian Howard May 2001

Park And Ride Feasibility Analysis For The Evansville, Indiana, Metropolitan Area, Brian Howard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Congested roadways and declining air quality standards are major concerns for many communities faced with the challenges of suburban growth and city decay. How each community chooses to fight the problems created by urban sprawl depends greatly on individualized characteristics of the community. Analyzing and understanding unique values of each community provides a sound foundation for measures designed to promote sustainable growth initiatives. The Evansville, Indiana, region is experiencing many of the growing pains associated with increased residential, commercial, and industrial development. Many roadways are currently strained near capacity, and traffic problems are anticipated to increase over the next 20 …

Elgenvalues Of Fibonacci-Like Sequences, Elyssa Hurst May 2001

Elgenvalues Of Fibonacci-Like Sequences, Elyssa Hurst

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The familiar Fibonacci sequence 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,... can be described by the recurrence relation x(0) = 1, x(1) = 1, x(n) = x(n-1) + x(n-2). For this relation, as n → oo, x(n+1) → 1 +√5 x(n) 2 ' which is the familiar golden ratio. This value is also the dominant eigenvalue of the above recurrence relation. In this series, we consider the dominant eigenvalue of some Fibonacci-like sequence of the form x(n) = ∑n-1/k+1 ak Zk (n-k) where the Zk's are independent random variables with Zk = {+1 with probability p - 1 with probability q, with p + q = …

Power Series Solutions To Ordinary Differential Equations, John Lagrange May 2001

Power Series Solutions To Ordinary Differential Equations, John Lagrange

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis, the reader will be made aware of methods for finding power series solutions to ordinary differential equations. In the case that a solution to a differential equation may not be expressed in terms of elementary functions, it is practical to obtain a solution in the form of an infinite series, since many differential equations which yield such a solution model an actual physical situation. In this thesis, we introduce conditions that guarantee existence and uniqueness of analytic solutions, both in the linear and nonlinear case. Several methods for obtaining analytic solutions are introduced as well. For the …
