Students And Their Learning From Reading, Chris Fenwick May 2001

Students And Their Learning From Reading, Chris Fenwick

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

My aim in this article is to summarize work I have done over the last three years, focusing on the issue of helping students learn from whatever mathematics text they read. Although these types of texts generally contain 3 modes of communication, namely technical English, the language of mathematics itself and diagrams, I will focus this article only on the technical English of such texts. The idea, then, that students can develop techniques and strategies for learning from what they read is generally known as “reading to learn.”

Lsay Cohort Report The Year 9 Class Of 1998 In 1999 : Activities And Aspirations, Sue Fullarton

LSAY Cohort Reports

This report examines in detail the activities and aspirations of one of the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Youth (LSAY) program’s longitudinal cohorts at a single point in time. In this case the cohort is the national sample of Year 9 students who were in Year 9 in Australian secondary schools in 1998, and the reference period is 1999.

Making Use Of The Most Expressive Jumping Emerging Patterns For Classification, Jinyan Li, Guozhu Dong, Kotagiri Ramamohanarao May 2001

Making Use Of The Most Expressive Jumping Emerging Patterns For Classification, Jinyan Li, Guozhu Dong, Kotagiri Ramamohanarao

Kno.e.sis Publications

Classification aims to discover a model from training data that can be used to predict the class of test instances. In this paper, we propose the use of jumping emerging patterns (JEPs) as the basis for a new classifier called the JEP-Classifier. Each JEP can capture some crucial difference between a pair of datasets. Then, aggregating all JEPs of large supports can produce a more potent classification power. Procedurally, the JEP-Classifier learns the pair-wise features (sets of JEPs) contained in the training data, and uses the collective impacts contributed by the most expressive pair-wise features to determine the class labels …

Participation In Graduate Level Coursework And Self-Efficacy Development Of Provisionally Licensed Special Education Teachers, Amy Corvello Mcginley May 2001

Participation In Graduate Level Coursework And Self-Efficacy Development Of Provisionally Licensed Special Education Teachers, Amy Corvello Mcginley

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this study was to determine (a) whether participation in graduate level coursework increased the self-efficacy of provisionally licensed special education teachers, (b) whether participation in graduate level coursework increased the self-efficacy of general education teachers and, (c) if there was a difference between the self-efficacy beliefs of the two groups of teachers. A total of twenty-three provisionally licensed special education and general education teachers in rural Virginia responded to both a pre and post questionnaire consisting of 30 items designed to assist the teacher in assessing his/her self-efficacy beliefs. The working hypothesis was that the provisionally licensed …

Mathematical Constance (A Poem Dedicated to Constance Reid)

I think that I shall never see

A constant lovelier than e,

Whose digits are too great too state,

They're 2.71828…

And e has such amazing features

It's loved by all (but mostly teachers).

With all of e's great properties

Most integrals are done with … ease.

Theorems are proved by fools like me

But only Euler could make an e.

I suppose, though, if I had to try

To choose another constant, I

Might offer i or phi or pi.

But none of those would satisfy.

Of all the …

Large Amplitude Perturbations In Mesospheric Oh Meinel And 87-Km Na Lidar Temperatures Around The Autumnal Equinox, Michael J. Taylor, W. R. Pendleton Jr., H. L. Liu, C. Y. She, Larry Gardner, R. G. Roble, V. Vasoli May 2001

Large Amplitude Perturbations In Mesospheric Oh Meinel And 87-Km Na Lidar Temperatures Around The Autumnal Equinox, Michael J. Taylor, W. R. Pendleton Jr., H. L. Liu, C. Y. She, Larry Gardner, R. G. Roble, V. Vasoli

All Physics Faculty Publications

Two high‐precision CEDAR instruments, an OH Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (MTM) and a Na Temperature Lidar, have been used to investigate seasonal variability in the mid‐latitude temperature at ∼87 km altitude over the western USA. Here we report the observation of a large perturbation in mesospheric temperature that occurs shortly after the autumnal equinox in close association with the penetration of planetary‐wave energy from the troposphere into the mesosphere. This perturbation has been observed on three occasions and exhibits a departure of up to ∼25–30 K from the nominal seasonal trend during a disturbed period of ∼2 weeks. Such behavior represents …

The Potential For Support Of Gardner's Theory Of The Naturalist Intelligence In Selected Elementary School Library Media Centers, Traci L. Haines May 2001

The Potential For Support Of Gardner's Theory Of The Naturalist Intelligence In Selected Elementary School Library Media Centers, Traci L. Haines

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of teaching to the ability of the child is complex. Each child absorbs, analyzes and processes information differently. Howard Gardner developed a series of eight intelligences describing the variety of ways in which children learn. This study focused on the Naturalist Intelligence, an ability to recognize and discriminate different concepts in nature. A naturalist learner has strong observational skills and is good at sorting and classifying (Checkley, 1997). This evaluation compares randomly selected samples of the collections of two elementary school library media centers in order to determine whether the books in the 500s support Gardner's Theory of …

Numerical Modeling Of Magnetohydrodynamic Activity In The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment, Vyacheslav S. Lukin , '00, G. Qin, W. H. Matthaeus, Michael R. Brown May 2001

Numerical Modeling Of Magnetohydrodynamic Activity In The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment, Vyacheslav S. Lukin , '00, G. Qin, W. H. Matthaeus, Michael R. Brown

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Results from a three-dimensional axisymmetric resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation are compared to experimental data from the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) [M. R. Brown, Phys. Plasmas 6, 1717 (1999)]. The MHD simulation is run under conditions and with dimensionless parameters similar to the experiment (Lundquist number S=1000, plasma beta beta =0.1). The simulation is shown to reproduce global equilibrium magnetic field profiles of the spheromaks as well as much of the detailed reconnection dynamics measured when two spheromaks are merged. It is concluded that SSX merger dynamics may be characterized as MHD reconnection, with the likelihood that extensions are needed to …
