The Relationship Of The Language-Based Characteristics Of A Selected Group Of Post-Secondary Esl Students To Pass Rates On The New Jersey Basic Skills Reading Test, Tina Previtera

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between selected language-based predictors of reading competence and the reading performance of a group of college-level ESL students receiving Basic Skills instruction. It appeared that a language barrier was preventing this group of students from passing their Basic Skills Reading requirement. It was hypothesized that this resulted in a lack of necessary skills for comprehending standard English. Based on theoretical perspectives obtained from a review of the literature, the language-based characteristics needed to obtain a passing score on the Basic Skills Reading are vocabulary, short-term verbal memory, and broad linguistic …

The Single-Sex Classroom And Math Self-Concept In Girls, Gina M. Piraccini May 2001

The Single-Sex Classroom And Math Self-Concept In Girls, Gina M. Piraccini

Student Work

Research shows girls' and boys' mathematics self-concept and achievement are comparable in elementary school; however as adolescence emerges, girls' scores fall below boys' (AAUW, 1992; Marsh, Parker & Barnes, 1985). In general self-concept in mathematics has been found to be highly correlated with mathematics achievement (Marsh et al., 1986, Shavelson & Bolus, 1982; Skaalvik & Rankin, 1990).

Fuel-Based On-Road Motor Vehicle Emissions Inventory For The Denver Metropolitan Area, Sajal S. Pokharel, Gary A. Bishop, Donald H. Stedman May 2001

Fuel-Based On-Road Motor Vehicle Emissions Inventory For The Denver Metropolitan Area, Sajal S. Pokharel, Gary A. Bishop, Donald H. Stedman

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications

Emission inventories from mobile sources have traditionally been obtained through computer modeling. This method, however, has intrinsic shortcomings in that ideal factors are included while real-world observations are left out. The model predictions have not correlated well with measurements from several studies. Recently, a fuel-based method of obtaining on-road emissions inventories has been developed. This technique calculates emission factors in grams of pollutant per unit of fuel used (kg, gallons or L) from remote sensing measurements. Combining these factors with fuel use data, available from tax records, yields a fuel based emission inventory. We have used this routine to calculate …

Paper Session Ii-B - Lunar And Martian Paleontology, Doug D. Shull May 2001

Paper Session Ii-B - Lunar And Martian Paleontology, Doug D. Shull

Space Congress® Proceedings

The discovery of organic material imbedded in the Martian Meteorite Alan Hills (AH) 84001 in 1996 changed science. Many people now consider the possibility that microbial life existed on or may still exist on the planet Mars. NASA, The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the European Space Agency (ESA) are considering packages and experiments for future Mars robotic missions to detect the presence of microbial life near the surface of Mars. We should pursue these worthy efforts. However, the surfaces of Mars and the Moon may very well hold evidence of life, both microbial and macroscopic, from Earth’s past. I …

In a comparison of achievement in scientific inquiry, the U.S. ranks thirteenth among the 38 nations participating in the study. This decline is a serious national …

Paper Session Ii-A - Design And Verification Of Space Station Eva-Operated Truss Attachment System, Gabriel R. Katell May 2001

Paper Session Ii-A - Design And Verification Of Space Station Eva-Operated Truss Attachment System, Gabriel R. Katell

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper describes the design and verification of a system used to attach two segments of the International Space Station (ISS). This system was first used in space to mate the P6 and Z1 trusses together in December 2000, through a combination of robotic and Extra-Vehicular tasks. Features that provided capture, coarse alignment, and fine alignment during the berthing process are described. Attachment of this high value hardware was critical to the ISS’s sequential assembly, necessitating the inclusion of backup design and operational features. Astronauts checked for the proper performance of the alignment and bolting features during on-orbit operations. During …

The Ising Model On A Dynamically Triangulated Disk With A Boundary Magnetic Field, Simon Catterall, Scott V. Mcguire, Mark Bowick, Simeon Warner May 2001

The Ising Model On A Dynamically Triangulated Disk With A Boundary Magnetic Field, Simon Catterall, Scott V. Mcguire, Mark Bowick, Simeon Warner

Physics - All Scholarship

We use Monte Carlo simulations to study a dynamically triangulated disk with Ising spins on the vertices and a boundary magnetic field. For the case of zero magnetic field we show that the model possesses three phases. For one of these the boundary length grows linearly with disk area, while the other two phases are characterized by a boundary whose size is on the order of the cut-off. A line of continuous magnetic transitions separates the two small boundary phases. We determine the critical exponents of the continuous magnetic phase transition and relate them to predictions from continuum 2-d quantum …

Comprehensive Isotachophoresis-Capillary Electrophoresis Coupled To Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, Christopher Ryan Bowerbank May 2001

Comprehensive Isotachophoresis-Capillary Electrophoresis Coupled To Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, Christopher Ryan Bowerbank

Theses and Dissertations

Isotachophoresis (ITP) coupled to capillary zone electrophoresis (CE) in a comprehensive manner was used to separate mixture components in both insufficient and sufficient concentrations without heart-cutting or splitting. Examples of comprehensive ITP-CE involving multiple CE injections of preconcentrated ITP zones are demonstrated. In the comprehensive arrangement, all of the sample in the first dimension (ITP) is subjected to analysis in the second dimension (CE), without significant sample loss or decrease in sample detectability resulting from removal of a portion of the sample. This is especially important for analytes at low concentrations which may form a single mixed zone instead of …
