Evaluation Of Alveolar And Soft Tissue Changes After Muscular Release Surgery In Patients Undergoing Fixed Orthodontic Therapy, Virginia Bernal

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study compared pre-treatment to post-treatment changes in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy who have had muscular release surgery. The alveolar and soft tissue changes in the mandible of 128 subjects from a private practice in Northern Italy (74 females and 54 males) were analyzed. In addition, comparisons were made of changes related to age, gender, facial type, and movement of the lower incisor. Lateral cephalograms were analyzed before and after treatment for skeletal, esthetic, and dentoalveolar changes. Photographs were used to assess changes in the soft tissue of the lower anterior region at pretreatment (Tl) versus post-treatment (T2). The …

Surface Modification Of Diamond And Determination Of Kinetics And Mechanism Of Modification Reactions, Humera Farooq Jun 2001

Surface Modification Of Diamond And Determination Of Kinetics And Mechanism Of Modification Reactions, Humera Farooq

Masters Theses

A series of photochemically modified diamond surfaces were prepared. Surface functional groups added included, chlorine, bromine, methoxy, amine, methylamine, dimethylarnine and trimethylammonium chloride. Photochemically chlorinated and brominated diamond surfaces were used as synthetic intermediates. The modified diamond surfaces were characterized by Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopy (DRIFT) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS).

The study was mainly focused on understanding the kinetic processes and reaction mechanism of modified surfaces. The observed rate constants for surface hydrogen loss and HCl (g) evolution were found to be identical. Similar rate constants were observed for amine substitution and consumption of ammonia.

The study of action …

Meyer-Neldel Rule For Dark Current In Charge-Coupled Devices, Ralf Widenhorn, Lars Mündermann, Armin Rest, Erik Bodegom Jun 2001

Meyer-Neldel Rule For Dark Current In Charge-Coupled Devices, Ralf Widenhorn, Lars Mündermann, Armin Rest, Erik Bodegom

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present the results of a systematic study of the dark current in each pixel of a charged-coupled device chip. It was found that the Arrhenius plot, at temperatures between 222 and 291 K, deviated from a linear behavior in the form of continuous bending. However, as a first approximation, the dark current, D, can be expressed as: D=Dₒ exp(−ΔE/kT),where ΔE is the activation energy, k is Boltzmann’s constant, and T the absolute temperature. It was found that ΔE and the exponential prefactor Dₒ follow the Meyer–Neldel rule (MNR) for all of the more than 222,000 investigated pixels. The isokinetic …

Civil War Book Review

Harry V. Jaffa takes his time. The wait is well worth it. Forty-one years separate the publication of Jaffa's recognized classic, Crisis of the House Divided (University of Chicago Press, ISBN 0226391132, $20.00 softcover), and this new work on Abraham Lincoln's political thought. A third vol....

Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By L-Leucinephosphonic Acid. Spectroscopic And Crystallographic Characterization Of The Transition State Of Peptide Hydrolysis, Carin Stamper, Brian Bennett, Tanya Edwards, Richard C. Holz, Dagmar Ringe, Gregory A. Petsko Jun 2001

Petsko

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The nature of the interaction of the transition-state analogue inhibitor l-leucinephosphonic acid (LPA) with the leucine aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP) was investigated. LPA was shown to be a competitive inhibitor at pH 8.0 with a Ki of 6.6 μM. Electronic absorption spectra, recorded at pH 7.5 of [CoCo(AAP)], [CoZn(AAP)], and [ZnCo(AAP)] upon addition of LPA suggest that LPA interacts with both metal ions in the dinuclear active site. EPR studies on the Co(II)-substituted forms of AAP revealed that the environments of the Co(II) ions in both [CoZn(AAP)] and [ZnCo(AAP)] become highly asymmetric and constrained upon the addition of …

Analysing Construction Risk : A Project Management Model, P K Dey Jun 2001

Analysing Construction Risk : A Project Management Model, P K Dey

IIMB Management Review

The success parameters for any project are ontime completion within the specific budget, and requisite performance or meeting the technical requirements. The main barriers to achievement are changes in the project environment. The problem multiplies with the size of the project. Large-scale construction projects are exposed to an uncertain environment because they are subject to such factors as planning and design complexity, presence of various interest groups (project owner, owner’s project group, consultants, contractors, vendors etc), availability of resources (materials, equipment, funds etc), climatic environment, the economic and political environment and statutory regulations. Other risk factors include the complexity of …

Equilibrium Spells Death : Applying Chaos Theory To Organisations, Saurav Mukherji Jun 2001

Equilibrium Spells Death : Applying Chaos Theory To Organisations, Saurav Mukherji

IIMB Management Review

Organisations have long been viewed as open systems consisting of inter-connected components having multiple levels of interdependencies that work together by exchanging resources within themselves and with the environment. Treating organisations as complex systems, organisational designers tried to match the structural complexity of organisations with a complex
environment and technology. However, in the light of some important discoveries in other fields regarding the nature of complex systems, it may be worthwhile to re-examine some of the basic assumptions made.

An Investigation Of Goodwill Accounting Policy Choice Within A Specific Knowledge Framework, Pearl H. N. Tan Jun 2001

An Investigation Of Goodwill Accounting Policy Choice Within A Specific Knowledge Framework, Pearl H. N. Tan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study, using Singapore data, investigates the relationship between Chief Executive Officers' (CEO) specific knowledge and the accounting method choice on capitalisation of goodwill. International Accounting Standard 22 (1987), applicable in Singapore in 1996, the year of the study, permits a choice between capitalisation with subsequent amortisation and immediate write-off of goodwill to reserves. This study proposes a positive relationship between human capital specificity of CEOs and the recognition of purchased goodwill on the balance sheet. Specific knowledge is unique to firms and is acquired through experience. Given that specialised assets arise from firm-specific circumstances, firm-specific knowledge potentially explains the …

Bi-Decomposition Of Multi-Valued Relations, Alan Mishchenko, Marek Perkowski, Bernd Steinbach Jun 2001

Bi-Decomposition Of Multi-Valued Relations, Alan Mishchenko, Marek Perkowski, Bernd Steinbach

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This presentation discusses an approach to decomposition of multivalued functions and relations into networks of two-input gates implementing multi-valued MIN and MAX operations. The algorithm exploits both the incompleteness of the initial specification and the flexibilities generated in the process of decomposition. Experimental results over a set of multi-valued benchmarks show that this approach outperforms other approaches in the quality of final results and CPU time.

Single-Sided Noninvasive Inspection Of Multielement Sample Using Fan-Beam Multiplexed Compton Scatter Tomography, Matthew A. Lange Jun 2001

Single-Sided Noninvasive Inspection Of Multielement Sample Using Fan-Beam Multiplexed Compton Scatter Tomography, Matthew A. Lange

Theses and Dissertations

As aircraft age, corrosion forms upon unobservable surfaces, particularly at the junction of the sheet aluminum and the steel rivets used to attach the sheets to the airframe, degrading the aircraft s airworthiness. Previous research developed a noninvasive technique for the evaluation of the material composition of aluminum surfaces, utilizing the information encoded in the energy spectra of Compton-scattered gamma emissions. The spectra are gathered by a six-element, high purity germanium detector array. A, first principles, deterministic computer code is used to reconstruct a two-dimensional map of the electron density of aluminum samples. Previous efforts, to image pure aluminum samples, …

Time-Resolved Photoluminescence Of Inas/Gainsb Quantum Well Lasers, Michael R. Mckay Jun 2001

Time-Resolved Photoluminescence Of Inas/Gainsb Quantum Well Lasers, Michael R. Mckay

Theses and Dissertations

In the world of semiconductor photonic device fabrication, one important objective may be to extract as much light as possible from the device. In these devices, photons are created when electrons recombine with holes by transitioning from a high-energy state to a lower one. Unfortunately, electron-hole recombination does not always result in the formation of a photon. There are three basic types of recombination: the first results in the formation of a photon and is called radiative recombination; and the second and third, known as Shockley-Read-Hall and Auger recombination, result in the heating of the device and do not produce …

Simultaneous Measurement Of Changes In Thickness And Refractive Index Of Weakly Absorbing Self-Standing Solid Films Using Optical Interferometry, Nalini Easwar, R. Fantini, E. Willis Jun 2001

Simultaneous Measurement Of Changes In Thickness And Refractive Index Of Weakly Absorbing Self-Standing Solid Films Using Optical Interferometry, Nalini Easwar, R. Fantini, E. Willis

Physics: Faculty Publications

A nondestructive optical interferometric method, which enables a direct and simultaneous measurement of small changes in both thickness and refractive index of thin films, is described. Optical interferometric methods are sensitive to the changes in the optical path length (the product of the refractive index and the physical thickness) through the film. Thus, when the film is subjected to changing environmental conditions such as changing temperature or humidity, it is a challenge to determine the change in thickness and the change in refractive index separately, using interferometry. By simultaneously monitoring two different sets of interference fringes, i.e., transmission and reflection …

Forecasting Life And Death: Juror Race, Religion, And Attitude Toward The Death Penalty, Theodore Eisenberg, Stephen P. Garvey, Martin T. Wells Jun 2001

Forecasting Life And Death: Juror Race, Religion, And Attitude Toward The Death Penalty, Theodore Eisenberg, Stephen P. Garvey, Martin T. Wells

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Determining whether race, sex, or other juror characteristics influence how capital case jurors vote is difficult. Jurors tend to vote for death in more egregious cases and for life in less egregious cases no matter what their own characteristics. And a juror's personal characteristics may get lost in the process of deliberation because the final verdict reflects the jury's will, not the individual juror's. Controlling for the facts likely to influence a juror's verdict helps to isolate the influence of a juror's personal characteristics. Examining each juror's first sentencing vote reveals her own judgment before the majority works its will. …
