Fuzzy Areas And Firm Boundaries, Pradeep Banerjee Jun 2001

Fuzzy Areas And Firm Boundaries, Pradeep Banerjee

IIMB Management Review

The manner in which firms function has been studied by academic economists for some time now. Adam Smith, the doyen of economists, incorporated his evaluation of producing units in his Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of Wealth of Nations (1776). The other famous economist, Alfred Marshal also studied the operation of the market and firms that functioned in it. Marshal is credited with having laid down an important part of the methodology of microeconomics, a branch of economics that takes up the study of firms as part of its routine.

Hillsborough Independent Monitoring Program Technical Memorandum Lower Hillsborough River Benthic Monitoring 2000, Stephen A. Grabe, David J. Karlen, Christina M. Holden, Barbara Goetting Jun 2001

Hillsborough Independent Monitoring Program Technical Memorandum Lower Hillsborough River Benthic Monitoring 2000, Stephen A. Grabe, David J. Karlen, Christina M. Holden, Barbara Goetting

Reports

The Lower Hillsborough River system has been heavily impacted by stormwater discharges and reduction of freshwater inflow (Mote Marine Laboratory 1984; Water & Air Research Inc. 1993; Water & Air Research & SOl Environmental Services, Inc. 1994) .. A consequence has been increased salinity, the accumulation of fine-grained sediments and associated contaminants, as well as lowered DO levels. Analysis of past EPCHC data for the Lower Hillsborough River showed that benthic community characteristics (as measured by the TBBI) were not necessarily related to dissolved oxygen, salinity, or depth (Grabe and Karlen 1999; Grabe el al. 2000). The data collected through …

Mathematics Memory Verses: Weekly Devotionals For Math Class, Mark Colgan Jun 2001

Mathematics Memory Verses: Weekly Devotionals For Math Class, Mark Colgan

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

Each Monday during the semester I start class with a short devotional on a verse that relates in some way to mathematics. After three weeks I choose one of the three at random for students to write out on their quiz for a possible bonus point. This encourages students to practice memorizing Scripture and it gives us the opportunity to discuss biblical principles that relate to some of the topics we are studying in the course.

I would like to share some of the Bible verses and weekly devotionals I have used in my mathematics classes. These can be organized …

Parables For Mathematicians: With Good News For Curved Beings, Ashley Reiter Ahlin Jun 2001

Parables For Mathematicians: With Good News For Curved Beings, Ashley Reiter Ahlin

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

Because we often lack the language for talking about such deep matters, the things of God can be hard to understand or talk about. The things that we do see and know were made by the same God of whom we speak. Thus, they are reflections of His nature, purposes, and ways and can help us to think and take about Him. This presentation expresses a parable using the language of math.

On Periodic Points On Maps Of Trees And The Expansive Property, Fred Worth Jun 2001

On Periodic Points On Maps Of Trees And The Expansive Property, Fred Worth

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

In this paper, we consider the expansive property (A homeomorphism, f, of a metric space, X, onto itself is called expansive if there is a positive number, ε, such that if x and y are distinct points of X, then there exists an integer, n = n(x,y), such that d(f n(x), f n(y)) > ε. It should be noted that n may be negative.) and how it relates to shift homeomorphisms of a tree with a single, surjective bonding map. We also consider some results regarding the periodicity of points in self-maps of trees.

Why Natural Selection Can't Design Anything, William A. Dembski Jun 2001

Why Natural Selection Can't Design Anything, William A. Dembski

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

In The Fifth Miracle Paul Davies suggests that any laws capable of explaining the origin of life must be radically different from scientific laws known to date? The problem, as he sees it, with currently known scientific laws, like the laws of chemistry and physics, is that they cannot explain the key feature of life that needs to be explained. That feature is specified complexity. Life is both complex and specified. The basic institution here is straightforward. Davies rightly notes, laws (that is, necessities of nature) can explain specification but not complexity. Once life (or more generally some self-replicator) …

Mathematics As Worship, David J. Stucki Jun 2001

Mathematics As Worship, David J. Stucki

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

In keeping with the mission of this organization to explore the relationship of faith to our discipline, I would like to take this opportunity to investigate the relationship, if any, between mathematics and worship. There have been throughout history, at least since Pythagoras, connections made between the mathematical and the theological. Many of these such efforts have followed the Pythagorean cult in deifying number, thus making mathematics the object of worship. Othes have effectively situated theology in subservience to mathematical reason. However, these are not the only alternatives.

Once we admit the possibility of a connection between mathematics and theology, …

Thml: Theological Markup Language For The Christian Classics Ethereal Library, Harry Plantinga Jun 2001

Thml: Theological Markup Language For The Christian Classics Ethereal Library, Harry Plantinga

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

This document describes the Theological Markup Language (ThML), an XML markup language for theological texts. ThML was developed for use in the Christian Classics Ethereal Library (CCEL), but it is hoped that the language will serve as a royalty-free format for theological texts in other applications. Key design goals are that the language should be (1) rich enough to represent information needed for digital libraries and for theological study involving multiple, related texts, including cross-reference, synchronization, indexing, and scripture references, (2) based on XML and usable with World Wide Web tools, (3) automatically convertible to other common formats, and (4) …

Economic Espionage Act--Reverse Engineering And The Intellectual Property Public Policy, The, Craig L. Uhrich Jun 2001

Economic Espionage Act--Reverse Engineering And The Intellectual Property Public Policy, The, Craig L. Uhrich

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

The publicity surrounding[...] incidents of industrial espionage resulted in a push for federal protections. In response to this pressure from U.S. industries, Congress passed the Economic Espionage Act of 1996 ("EEA"). The EEA protects trade secrets through the use of federal criminal sanctions." The EEA's provisions are introduced in Part I. Trade secrets are a form of intellectual property. Therefore, a basic understanding of intellectual property law is important to an analysis of the EEA. Part II of this Article provides an overview of the various forms of intellectual property. To be effective, the EEA must complement existing intellectual property …

Defining The Proper Scope Of Internet Patents: If We Don't Know Where We Want To Go, We're Unlikely To Get There, Vincent Chiappetta Jun 2001

Defining The Proper Scope Of Internet Patents: If We Don't Know Where We Want To Go, We're Unlikely To Get There, Vincent Chiappetta

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Part I of this Article addresses the appropriateness of protecting Internet innovations under the current patent regime. It concludes that the doctrinal, historical and policy arguments require different outcomes regarding computing (patentable subject matter) and competitive arts (at best a difficult fit) innovation. Part II argues that the new electronic economy has given rise to a particular kind of competitive arts "market failure" (interference with first-to-move lead-time incentives) which must be addressed. It concludes, however, that tinkering with the existing patent or copyright regimes is not only complex, but poses significant risks, and should be avoided. Part III sketches the …

International And Comparative Law Perspectives On Internet Patents, Toshiko Takenaka Jun 2001

International And Comparative Law Perspectives On Internet Patents, Toshiko Takenaka

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

The Internet and e-commerce have created a borderless market. Goods and services sold on the Internet are subject to the patent statutes and regulations of all countries in which customers have access. Because the presence or absence of patent protection--or variations in that protection--hinders the movement of goods and services throughout the Internet, it is necessary to harmonize the protection afforded by Internet patents in their early stages of development. Among the three papers, however, only Professor Chiappetta touched upon the problem of compliance with the provisions in TRIPS. None of the papers paid attention to the feasibility of harmonizing …

Hypertextile Scholarship: Digitally Editing The Bayeux Tapestry, Martin Kennedy Foys Jun 2001

Hypertextile Scholarship: Digitally Editing The Bayeux Tapestry, Martin Kennedy Foys

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The dilemma of studying the Tapestry is twofold. In traditional editions of the textile, the discursive limits of the printed page require either a sacrifice of narrative fluidity for detailed resolution, or the converse. Put another way, in a printed edition, "readers" of the Tapestry either are given the document in gloriously detailed, high-resolution plates that fragment the textile's continuity, or are faced with small-scale reproductions that capture large narrative blocks but lack any comprehensive magnified detail. Additionally, since its rediscovery in the 1720s and like any complex and canonical narrative expression, the Tapestry has generated hundreds of scholarly books …

Hillsborough Independent Monitoring Program Technical Memorandum Palm River Benthic Monitoring 2000, Stephen A. Grabe, David J. Karlen, Christina M. Holden, Barbara Goetting

Reports

The EPCHC proposed an increase in benthic macro invertebrate sampling in the Palm River during the three "wet seasons" preceding the initiation of withdrawals, to be followed by at least three years of post-diversion sampling. This technical memorandum summarizes data collected during the August 2000 sampling period and complements data collected in prior years (Grabe & Karlen 1999; Karlen et al. 2000).

An Analysis Of Recent Drought Conditions In Turkey In Relation To Circulation Patterns, Ali Umran Komuscu Jun 2001

An Analysis Of Recent Drought Conditions In Turkey In Relation To Circulation Patterns, Ali Umran Komuscu

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

Drought commonly is perceived to be a prolonged period with a significant reduction in precipitation. Namias (1985) argues that drought is associated with persistent or persistently recurring atmospheric circulation patterns. For example, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has a major role in controlling European climate and appears to exert a strong influence in modulating North Atlantic ecosystems. During the positive phases of NAO, the North Atlantic westerlies, which provide much of the atmospheric moisture to north Africa and Europe, shift northward. This, in turn, results in drier conditions over southern Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, and northern Africa (Hurrell, 1995; Hurrell …

Microcathodoluminescence Of Impurity Doping At Gallium Nitride/Sapphire Interfaces, S. H. Goss, X. L. Sun, A. P. Young, L. J. Brillson, David C. Look, Richard J. Molnar Jun 2001

Microcathodoluminescence Of Impurity Doping At Gallium Nitride/Sapphire Interfaces, S. H. Goss, X. L. Sun, A. P. Young, L. J. Brillson, David C. Look, Richard J. Molnar

Physics Faculty Publications

We have used low-temperature cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (CLS) to probe the spatial distribution and energies of electronic defects near GaN/Al2O3 interfaces grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE). Cross sectional secondary electron microscopy CLS shows systematic variations in impurity/defect emissions over a wide range of HVPE GaN/Sapphire electronic properties. These data, along with electrochemical capacitance–voltage profiling and secondary ion mass spectrometry, provide a consistent picture of near-interface doping by O diffusion from Al2O3 into GaN, over a range 100–1000 nm.

Fine Structure On The Green Band In Zno, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai Jun 2001

Fine Structure On The Green Band In Zno, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai

Physics Faculty Publications

An emission band at 2.4 eV, called the green band, is observed in most ZnO samples, no matter what growth technique is used. Sometimes this band includes fine structure, which consists mainly of doublets, repeated with a longitudinal-optical-phonon-energy spacing (72 meV). We have developed a vibronic model for the green band, based on transitions from two separate shallow donors to a deep acceptor. The donors, at energies 30 and 60 meV from the conduction-band edge, respectively, are also found from Hall-effect measurements.

Evidence For Shallow Acceptors In Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai, Richard J. Molnar Jun 2001

Evidence For Shallow Acceptors In Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai, Richard J. Molnar

Physics Faculty Publications

Two low-temperature photoluminescence lines in GaN, in the region of energies commonly interpreted as longitudinal optical-phonon replicas of free excitons, donor-bound excitons, or acceptor-bound excitons, are reinterpreted as acceptor-bound excitons (A0X’s) collapsing to n=2 and n=3 excited states, respectively, of the acceptors involved. Application of this model to two sets of A0X-related lines in hydride-vapor-phase-grown GaN gives acceptor energies of 85±1, and 115±1 meV, respectively. The existence of such shallow acceptor states, if confirmed, is of great technological importance.

Instrument For The Measurement Of Hysteresis Loops Of Magnetotactic Bacteria And Other Systems Containing Submicron Magnetic Particles, Hendrik De Waard, James Hilsinger, Richard B. Frankel Jun 2001

Instrument For The Measurement Of Hysteresis Loops Of Magnetotactic Bacteria And Other Systems Containing Submicron Magnetic Particles, Hendrik De Waard, James Hilsinger, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

An electronic control system for the measurement of hysteresis curves of microscopically observed magnetic structures such as chains of magnetosomes in magnetotactic bacteria suspended or swimming in water is described. Using continuous magnetic fields generated by four coils for guidance or orientation of the bacteria or other magnetic structures, and pulsed magnetic fields in two additional coils for changing the degree of magnetization in small steps, hysteresis curves can be traversed. The circuits described can be constructed with readily available components. The guiding- and pulsed-field coils can be fashioned in any standard machine shop. The typical sensitivity of the system …

In Situ Biosurfactant Production At Carson City Park, Michigan, Andrew J. Hudak Jun 2001

In Situ Biosurfactant Production At Carson City Park, Michigan, Andrew J. Hudak

Masters Theses

Crude oil refining operations conducted by the Crystal Refining Company in Carson City, Michigan have led to the contamination of the soil and groundwater at Carson City Park with petroleum hydrocarbons. In situ biosurfactant production, occurring as a result of the biodegradation activities of hydrocarbon degrading microorganisms, was investigated.

Background hydrogeological and biogeochemical data were collected from the groundwater from thirteen monitoring wells at Carson City Park. Further analysis included the identification of biosurfactant producing microorganisms and biosurfactants present in the soil and groundwater.

Results showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa was producing both monorhamnolipids and dirhamnolipids (glycolipid biosurfactants) in the contaminated …

Optimum Bonding Time Of Four Different Curing Lights, Nathan Don Cotten Jun 2001

Optimum Bonding Time Of Four Different Curing Lights, Nathan Don Cotten

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

With the development of new high-intensity curing lights, the time required to bond orthodontic brackets is steadily decreasing. The objective of this study was to determine the optimum curing time for bonding orthodontic brackets using four different visible curing lights (Standard Optilux 501, High Intensity Optilux 501 with Turbo Tip, Virtuoso Plasma Arc, and ESPE LED light). This study also tested the new generation of light emitting diode (LED) lights to determine if they can be used for bonding orthodontic brackets. Three hundred freshly extracted bovine teeth were mounted in acrylic resin and divided into 20 groups of 15 teeth …

Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler Jun 2001

Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The near-death phenomenon has initiated a new debate over Jesus' and Paul's claim in the New Testament that the gospel message therein outlines the only way to salvation. Despite twenty-five years of writing and research by near-death (NDE) advocates the dispute continues not only over the disparity between the gospel and NOE but over the origin and meaning of the near-death experience itself. Initially it was medical and pharmacological questions that focused the discussions. More advanced theories are being offered suggesting that the right temporal lobe of the brain acts as a "circuit board" or gateway for a range of …
