Market-Based Control Of Mobile-Agent Systems, Jonathan L. Bredin Jun 2001

Market-Based Control Of Mobile-Agent Systems, Jonathan L. Bredin

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Modern distributed systems scatter sensors, storage, and computation throughout the environment. Ideally these devices communicate and share resources, but there is seldom motivation for a device's owner to yield control to another user. We establish markets for computational resources to motivate principals to share resources with arbitrary users, to enforce priority in distributed systems, to provide flexible and rational limitations on the potential of an application, and to provide a lightweight structure to balance the workload over time and between devices. As proof of concept, we implement a structure software agents can use to discover and negotiate access to networked …

Cost Domination In Graphs, David John Erwin Jun 2001

Cost Domination In Graphs, David John Erwin

Dissertations

Let G be a connected graph having order at least 2. A function f : V (G) —> {0 , 1 , . . . , diam G} for which f ( v ) < e(v) for every vertex v of G is a cost function on G. A vertex v with f ( v ) > 0 is an f-dominating vertex, and the set Vj~ = {v 6 V(G) : f(v) > 0} of f-dominating vertices is the f-dominating set. An /-dominating vertex v is said to f-dominate every vertex u with d(n, v) < f(u ), while …

The Differential Impact Of Sexism In Latino Men And Women’S Psychiatric Symptoms, Astrid Magalij Reina-Patton Jun 2001

The Differential Impact Of Sexism In Latino Men And Women’S Psychiatric Symptoms, Astrid Magalij Reina-Patton

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study assessed the reliability of the Spanish and English versions of the Schedule of Sexist Events General Form (SSE-G). The extent to which Spanish and English-speaking men and women differed in their responses on the SSE-G was investigated, as was the degree to which men and women differed in their report of psychiatric symptoms. Further, the extent to which the SSE-G predicted psychiatric symptomology for Spanish and English-speaking men and women was assessed, as was the extent to which sexism (i.e., gender-specific stress) accounted for additional variance in symptoms, above and beyond that accounted for by acculturation, language, and …

Approximating Eigenvalues For Double Well Potentials., Chad Fulk Jun 2001

Approximating Eigenvalues For Double Well Potentials., Chad Fulk

Student Work

One dimensional double well potentials usually refer to those potentials which have two equivalent or non-equivalent minima. They have been used to model diverse systems ranging from the electronic structure of diatomic molecules to electron-lattice coupling in high temperature superconductors [1][2]. However, one difficulty to the utility of these models is that exact analytical solutions for almost all double well potentials have not been found, in spite of the fact that this type of potential is constantly utilized as an illustrative example in the literature. Despite intensive research into this problem, only a few types of double wells have been …

Assessing Silicone Holdout For Release Papers, Rudolf Haraga Jun 2001

Assessing Silicone Holdout For Release Papers, Rudolf Haraga

Masters Theses

Silicone coating is widely used on papers that require low surface tension. Such papers are called release papers and are used in label, food, and packaging applications. Before silicone coating is applied, the base paper undergoes sizing procedures to smooth the surface and to cover voids present in the surface of the paper substrate. After the base paper is properly sized, it is silicone coated. This makes the surface of the base paper have a low surface energy. Therefore, when a second adhesive paper is applied to the base paper, the second adhesive paper can be easily recovered from the …

The resultant linear Approximate Dynamic Programming algorithm is illustrated via the design of an autolander for the NASA X-43 research aircraft, without a priori knowledge of the X-43's flight dynamics.

Oregon Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan, Erik Hanson, Mark Sytsma Jun 2001

Oregon Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan, Erik Hanson, Mark Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) are a serious problem in Oregon. There are currently over 134 nonindigenous aquatic species reported in Oregon. More species are expected to arrive. Current state activities and authorities address some ANS, their prevention, and control. Yet, the activities are not coordinated or comprehensively managing the impacts of ANS. The importance of Oregon’s aquatic resources requires a coherent response to the threat posed by ANS. This management plan is the initial step in establishing a program in Oregon to specifically address ANS issues.

Apoptosis Following Peripheral Sensory Deafferentation In The Olfactory Blub Of Adult Zebrafish, Danio Rerio, Akiko M. Vankirk Jun 2001

Apoptosis Following Peripheral Sensory Deafferentation In The Olfactory Blub Of Adult Zebrafish, Danio Rerio, Akiko M. Vankirk

Masters Theses

Removal of the olfactory organ in the adult zebrafish results in a significant decrease in volume of the ipsilateral olfactory bulb. Our lab has been investigating the potential role of apoptosis in this phenomenon. My hypothesis is that cells in the adult olfactory bulb normally undergo minimal apoptosis and that apoptosis will increase when sensory stimulation is removed. The TUNEL method allowed detection of cells undergoing DNA-fragmentation, which indicates an apoptotic response. Double-label immunohistochemistry was used to mark which apoptotic cells are neurons by using antibody to Hu, a neuron specific protein. Triple-labeling with bis-benzirnide confirmed the apoptotic nature of …

Human Head-Neck Response To Impact Acceleration: Comparison Of Oblique To Combined Frontal And Lateral Response, Salvadore J. Guccione Jr., Edit J. Kaminsky Jun 2001

Human Head-Neck Response To Impact Acceleration: Comparison Of Oblique To Combined Frontal And Lateral Response, Salvadore J. Guccione Jr., Edit J. Kaminsky

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper relates human oblique head-neck kinematics to human frontal and lateral head-neck kinematics for three subjects of varying anthropometry. Head-neck kinematic response to indirect impact acceleration for an oblique test is compared to the superposition of the head/neck behavior of appropriate frontal and lateral tests for the same subject. The results have important implications in terms of the complexity required in the design and validation of omni-directional biofidelic crash test manikins and mathematical models of human head-neck response.

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

p-Hydroxymethylbenzyl chloride was found to be an effective cross-linking agent for polystyrene. The reaction was found to occur by Friedel–Crafts alkylation between the benzyl alcohol/chloride functional groups in the additive and phenyl ring in polystyrene. The reaction was studied by TGA–IR to monitor the evolution of hydrogen chloride and water, and the structure of the resultant gel was analyzed by solid state NMR and elemental analysis. The potential application in flame-retardancy was evaluated using Cone calorimetry.

Electronic Structure Of Superconducting Mgb₂ And Related Binary And Ternary Borides, Nadezhda I. Medvedeva, Alexander L. Ivanovskii, Julia E. Medvedeva, Arthur J. Freeman

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

First-principles full potential linear muffin-tin orbital-generalized gradient approximation electronic structure calculations of the new medium-Tc superconductor (MTSC) MgB2 and related diborides indicate that superconductivity in these compounds is related to the existence of Px,y-band holes at the γ point. Based on these calculations, we explain the absence of medium-Tc superconductivity for BeB2, AlB2, ScB2, and YB2. The simulation of a number of MgB2-based ternary systems using a supercell approach demonstrates that (i) the electron doping of MgB2 (i.e., MgB2-yXy with X=Be, …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Non superconducting La2Ba2Cu4O9+δ system has been made superconducting by the addition of CaCuO2, along with rare earth doping at the La site, with the stoichiometric composition La2-xRxCayBa2Cu4+yO10+δ (R=Nd, Gd, and y=2x). All the samples with 0.0 < x < 0.5; y=2x were characterized by x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements for structural properties and by ac susceptibility, dc resistivity, and iodometric analysis for superconducting properties. The x=0.0 sample displays semiconducting behavior. Increasing x increases Tc from less than 15 K for Nd/Gd samples with x=0.1 to ∼78 K for x=0.5 samples. It is interesting to note that the hole concentration and Tc exhibit a strong correlation with increasing dopant concentration. Neutron diffraction studies confirm the occupancy of Ca and Nd ions at the La site with a concomitant displacement of La on to the Ba site. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Heavy fermion itinerant antiferromagnetic UNiAl is one of the very few U-containing compounds which absorbs H2/D2 without disproportionation. The present neutron diffraction studies on UNiAlDy (y = 2.2) are directed towards resolving controversies with regard to the occupancy of Ni atoms and the associated interstitial sites for (H/D) atoms, as well as the nature of magnetic ordering in the higher hydride phase with y ≥ 2. The fit to the neutron diffraction data is found to improve considerably if the Ni atoms originally lying in the U-atoms' plane in UNiAl get shifted to the Ni-Al atoms' plane in the deuteride. …

Quality Improvement Tools In Disease Management, Lisa E. Paddock, Amy L. Phillips, Peter Chodoff

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Disease management programs require constant monitoring to assure quality and address problems efficiently. To initiate continuous quality improvement in a disease management program, there are several methods available to identify potential problems within the program that may be affecting quality. Some common quality improvement instruments include the Plan-Do-Check-Act model, check sheets, and so forth. Whatever model is used, Statistical Process Control using flow charts, histograms, Pareto diagrams, scatter diagrams, control charts, and cause-and-effect diagrams provides a better understanding about how the organization's processes are functioning. These tools facilitate problem recognition and allow an organization to meet established standards of quality …

Infopipes—An Abstraction For Information Flow, Jie Huang, Andrew P. Black, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu Jun 2001

Infopipes—An Abstraction For Information Flow, Jie Huang, Andrew P. Black, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Building Object-Oriented Distributed Systems has been facilitated by Remote Message Sending (RMS) systems like Java RMI and implementations of CORBA. However, RMS systems are designed to support request/response interactions. Streaming applications, in contrast, are characterized by high-bandwidth, long-duration communication with stringent performance requirements. Examples of streaming applications include video-on-demand, teleconferencing, on-line education, and environmental observation. These applications transfer huge amounts of data and focus on distributed information flow rather than request/response.

To simplify the task of building distributed streaming applications, we propose a new abstraction for information flow—Infopipes. Using Infopipes, information flow becomes the heart of the system, not an …
