Effect Of Tactile Feedback On Performance, Darren Paul Wilson Jul 2001

Effect Of Tactile Feedback On Performance, Darren Paul Wilson

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Humans interact with their environment by obtaining information from various modalities of sensing. These various modalities of sensing combine to facilitate manipulation and interaction with objects and the environment. The way humans interact with computers mirrors this environmental interaction with the absence of feedback from the tactile channel. The majority of computer operation is completed visually because currently, the primary feedback humans receive from computers is through the eyes. This strong dependence on the visual modality can cause visual fatigue and fixation on displays, resulting in errors and a decrease in performance. Distributing tasks and information across sensory modalities could …

Responses Of Three Coral Communities To The 1997–98 El Niño–Southern Oscillation: Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, Joshua S. Feingold Jul 2001

Responses Of Three Coral Communities To The 1997–98 El Niño–Southern Oscillation: Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, Joshua S. Feingold

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

One deep (13–15 m depth) and two shallow water (1.5 and 7 m) coral communities in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador were monitored for tissue response (bleaching, paling, morbidity) and secondary responses during and after elevated temperature stress associated with the 1997–98 El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event. Between March and May 1998, the fungiid coral Diaseris distorta paled and bleached (up to 88.0% of all individuals bleached) at 13–15 m depth. The small branching colonial coral, Psammocora stellata, paled (79.2% of all colonies) with very little bleaching (11.1%), also at 13–15 m depth. However, by May 1998 colonies of this …

Moving Icons, Detection And Distraction, Lyn Bartram, Colin Ware, Tom Calvert

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Simple motion has great potential for visually encoding information but there are as yet few experimentally validated guidelines for its use. Two studies were carried out to look at how efficiently simple motion cues were detected and how distracting they were in different task contexts. The results show that motion outperforms static representations and identify certain types of motions which are more distracting and irritating than others.

Surgical Sterilization As A Method Of Reducing Coyote Predation On Domestic Sheep, Cassity Bromley, Eric M. Gese Jul 2001

Surgical Sterilization As A Method Of Reducing Coyote Predation On Domestic Sheep, Cassity Bromley, Eric M. Gese

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Predation by coyotes (Canis latrans) on domestic sheep is a problem for many livestock producers throughout the United States Intermountain West. We examined whether surgical sterilization of coyote packs would modify their predatory behavior and reduce predation rates on domestic sheep as compared to coyote packs with pups. From June 1997 to December 1997, we gathered baseline information on coyote pack size and movements. In winter 1998, we surgically sterilized and radio-collared members of 5 coyote packs. We also captured and radio-collared members of 6 packs that remained intact (i.e., reproductive). During summer 1998, only 1 sterile pack …

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 2 - Clearing The Cobwebs From Judicial Opinions, Bryan A. Garner Jul 2001

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 2 - Clearing The Cobwebs From Judicial Opinions, Bryan A. Garner

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Ipropose that judges, in their opinions, put citations in footnotes and generally abstain from using substantive footnotes. And I propose that courts adopt a rule that brief writers may single-space footnotes if they contain only citations (or parentheticals coupled with citations) but must double space all footnotes that contain sentences. These simple proposals, if widely adopted, would promote better writing within the legal profession by encouraging legal writers to:
• Use shorter sentences.
• Compose paragraphs that are more coherent and forceful.
• Lead their readers to focus on ideas, not numbers.
• Lay bare poor writing and poor thinking. …

Effects Of Handedness On Completion Time During Performance Of Multiple Tasks Using “Proper” And “Improper” Tools, Lisnnette M. Nieves Suarez Jul 2001

Effects Of Handedness On Completion Time During Performance Of Multiple Tasks Using “Proper” And “Improper” Tools, Lisnnette M. Nieves Suarez

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Handedness is a very critical factor involving single or multiple tasks that are designed for a specific hand. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of proper tool design. This research identified the dominant hand and measured task completion time between each of two tasks, 1) the use of left and right-handed scissors using the right hand, and 2) Mouse Manipulation Task using the calculator provided by the computer with a left and right-handed mouse using the right hand. Annett’s (1995) 12-item questionnaire was used to identify the preferred hand. This questionnaire consisted of having the participants …

Job Shop Scheduling Problem: An Overview, Amr Arisha, Paul Young, Mohie El Baradie

Conference papers

The Job-shop scheduling is one of the most important industrial activities, especially in manufacturing planning. The problem complexity has increased along with the increase in the complexity of operations and product-mix. To solve this problem, numerous approaches have been developed incorporating discrete event simulation methodology. The scope and the purpose of this paper is to present a survey which covers most of the solving techniques of Job Shop Scheduling (JSS) problem. A classification of these techniques has been proposed: Traditional Techniques and Advanced Techniques. The traditional techniques to solve JSS could not fully satisfy the global competition and rapidly changing …

Evaluation Of Residual Chlorothalonil Levels On Processing Tomato Foliage Using The Tom-Cast Spray Program, Jane M. Patterson, Sue E. Nokes, Mark A. Bennett, Richard E. Riedel

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Field tomatoes were sprayed with chlorothalonil on a fixed–interval spray program and a TOM–CAST spray program with disease severity value threshold of 18. Foliage samples from upper and lower canopy layers were collected prior to spray re–applications. Chlorothalonil residue data were compared to the chlorothalonil efficacy threshold (1.2 μg/cm2). Using a seven–day interval program, eight of the nine and seven of the nine spray intervals had chlorothalonil residues above the critical level for the upper and lower canopy layers, respectively. Using the TOM–CAST program, four of the five spray intervals had chlorothalonil residues above the critical level for …

On The Utility Of Entanglement In Quantum Neural Computing, Dan A. Ventura Jul 2001

On The Utility Of Entanglement In Quantum Neural Computing, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Efforts in combining quantum and neural computation are briefly discussed and the concept of entanglement as it applies to this subject is addressed. Entanglement is perhaps the least understood aspect of quantum systems used for computation, yet it is apparently most responsible for their computational power. This paper argues for the importance of understanding and utilizing entanglement in quantum neural computation.

An Evaluation Of Shared Multicast Trees With Multiple Active Cores, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri Jul 2001

An Evaluation Of Shared Multicast Trees With Multiple Active Cores, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri

Faculty Publications

Core-based multicast trees use less router state, but have significant drawbacks when compared to shortest-path trees, namely higher delay and poor fault tolerance. We evaluate the feasibility of using multiple independent cores within a shared multicast tree. We consider several basic designs and discuss how using multiple cores improves fault tolerance without sacrificing router state. We examine the performance of multiple-core trees with respect to single-core trees and find that adding cores significantly lowers delay without increasing cost. Moreover, it takes only a small number of cores, placed with a k-center approximation, for a multiple-core tree to have lower delay …

Theories Of Uncertainty: Explaining The Possible Sources Of Error In Inferences, Vern R. Walker Jul 2001

Theories Of Uncertainty: Explaining The Possible Sources Of Error In Inferences, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article develops the concept of a "theory of uncertainty" as a tool for warranting non-monotonic inferences. It proposes that theories of uncertainty have an explanatory function in inference that is roughly parallel to the role played by theories of causation in the empirical sciences. An adequate theory of uncertainty provides a framework for explaining the warrant for non-monotonic inferences by explaining the possible sources of error in such inferences. A theory of uncertainty should explain the extent to which the available evidence warrants a particular conclusion and the kinds and degrees. of uncertainty associated with that conclusion. Such a …

Characterization Of Near-Surface Traps In Semiconductors: Gan, David C. Look, Z-Q. Fang Jul 2001

Characterization Of Near-Surface Traps In Semiconductors: Gan, David C. Look, Z-Q. Fang

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a simple a criterion, based on deep-level transient spectroscopy peak heights S(Vr) at two or more values of reverse bias Vr, to unequivocally determine whether or not a particular semiconductor trap is of bulk or near-surface nature. Moreover, we present an expression for S(Vr) with fitting parameters ϕB, the Schottky barrier height; δ, the trap penetration depth; and NT, the trap density. Application of the method to a thick, high-quality, epitaxial GaN layer, reveals two common traps which penetrate only 2700±300 Å into the …

Feedback Correction Of Angular Error In Grating Readout, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Sundaram Ramachandran Jul 2001

Feedback Correction Of Angular Error In Grating Readout, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Sundaram Ramachandran

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Angular and wavelength READ beam errors in holographic interconnection systems are often a recurrent problem. Several strategies have been proposed to minimize or eliminate such READOUT misalignments.

Some years ago, Chatterjee and co-workers proposed a method involving READ beam wavelength tuning to correct output angular errors. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using an acousto-optic (A-O) Bragg cell with optoelectronic feedback to dynamically correct the scattered beam for deviations in the incidence direction of the READ beam of a hologram. The concept here is based on an acoustic frequency feedback strategy used recently by Balakshy and Kazaryan for …

Raising The Social Security Retirement Ages: Weighing The Costs And Benefits, Kathryn L. Moore Jul 2001

Raising The Social Security Retirement Ages: Weighing The Costs And Benefits, Kathryn L. Moore

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The Social Security program faces a long-term funding deficit. The Board of Trustees of the Federal Old-Age and Survivors and Disability Insurance ("OASDI") Trust Funds predicts that unless corrective action is taken, Social Security benefit payments will exceed dedicated tax revenues by the year 2015, and the Social Security program will become insolvent—unable to pay promised benefits in full-by the year 2037. As a result of this projected deficit, Social Security has become "a lightning rod for far reaching reform proposals."

Proposals range from "traditional" proposals that would maintain the basics of the program's revenue and benefit structure but would …
