Coercivity Of Titanium-Substituted High-Temperature Permanent Magnets, Jian Zhou, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer Jul 2001

Coercivity Of Titanium-Substituted High-Temperature Permanent Magnets, Jian Zhou, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

The temperature dependence of the coercivity of Sm–Co based magnets is investigated by magnetization measurements and model calculations. The Zr-free titanium-substituted Sm–Co material exhibits a positive temperature coefficient dHc/dT of the coercivity (TCC) above room temperature, a reasonable hysteresis-loop shape, and an appreciable coercivity of 12.3 kOe at 500 C for the nominal composition Sm(Co6.2Cu0.8Ti0.3). The samples were produced by heat-treating the disordered 1 : 5 alloy commonly referred to as the TbCu7 (or 1 : 7) phase. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that, upon annealing at 1165 C, …

Towards Fusing Sophisticated Mathematical Knowledge And Informal Expert Knowledge: An Arbitrary Metric Can Be Naturally Interpreted In Fuzzy Terms, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Witold Pedrycz Jul 2001

Towards Fusing Sophisticated Mathematical Knowledge And Informal Expert Knowledge: An Arbitrary Metric Can Be Naturally Interpreted In Fuzzy Terms, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Witold Pedrycz

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we are faced with a necessity to combine sophisticated mathematical knowledge about the analyzed systems with informal expert knowledge. To make this combination natural, it is desirable to reformulate the abstract mathematical knowledge in understandable intuitive terms. In this paper, we show how this can be done for an abstract metric.

One way to define a metric is to pick certain properties P1, ..., Pn, and to define a similarity between two objects x and y as the degree to which P1(x) is similar to P1(y) and P2(x) is similar to P2(y), etc.

Similarity is naturally …

Statistical Inference For Simultaneous Clustering Of Gene Expression Data, Katherine S. Pollard, Mark J. Van Der Laan Jul 2001

Statistical Inference For Simultaneous Clustering Of Gene Expression Data, Katherine S. Pollard, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Current methods for analysis of gene expression data are mostly based on clustering and classification of either genes or samples. We offer support for the idea that more complex patterns can be identified in the data if genes and samples are considered simultaneously. We formalize the approach and propose a statistical framework for two-way clustering. A simultaneous clustering parameter is defined as a function of the true data generating distribution, and an estimate is obtained by applying this function to the empirical distribution. We illustrate that a wide range of clustering procedures, including generalized hierarchical methods, can be defined as …

Ethics As Therapy: Philosophical Counseling And Psychological Health, Mike W. Martin Jul 2001

Ethics As Therapy: Philosophical Counseling And Psychological Health, Mike W. Martin

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

From the inception of philosophical counseling an attempt was made to distinguish it from (psychological) therapy by insisting that therapy could not be more misleading. It is true that philosophical counselors should not pretend to be able to heal major mental illness; nevertheless they do contribute to positive health—health understood as something more than the absence of mental disease. This thesis is developed by critiquing Lou Marinoff’s book, Plato not Prozac!, but also by ranging more widely in the literature on philosophical counseling. I also interpret philosophical counseling as a form of philosophical ethics.

Precise Environmental Searches: Integrating Hierarchical Information Search With Envirodaemon, George Chang, Gunjan Samtani, Marcus Healey, Franz J. Kurfess, Jason Wang

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Information retrieval has evolved from searches of references, to abstracts, to documents. Search on the Web involves search engines that promise to parse full-text and other files: audio, video, and multimedia. With the indexable Web at 320 million pages and growing, difficulties with locating relevant information have become apparent. The most prevalent means for information retrieval relies on syntax-based methods: keywords or strings of characters are presented to a search engine, and it returns all the matches in the available documents. This method is satisfactory and easy to implement, but it has some inherent limitations that make it unsuitable for …

Market Revaluations Of Foreign Listings’ Reconciliations To U.S. Financial Reporting Gaap, Samir M. El-Gazzar, Philip M. Finn, Rudy A. Jacob Jul 2001

Market Revaluations Of Foreign Listings’ Reconciliations To U.S. Financial Reporting Gaap, Samir M. El-Gazzar, Philip M. Finn, Rudy A. Jacob

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires foreign firms wishing to list their securities on the U.S. exchanges to convert their financial statements to U.S.-based generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in a reconciliation filing known as Form 20-F. This paper extends prior research analyzing the importance of the SEC requirement by examining the value relevance to U.S. capital markets of Form 20-F reconciliation information under two additional hypotheses related to: i) investors' anticipation of the reconciliation, and ii) investors' perception of foreign countries' enforcement and reliability in applying local accounting rules. We argue that the information content of the Form …

Role Of Nitric Oxide As A Modulator Of Platelet Dense Granule Release, Clifton Ford Frilot Ii Jul 2001

Role Of Nitric Oxide As A Modulator Of Platelet Dense Granule Release, Clifton Ford Frilot Ii

Doctoral Dissertations

Nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to suppress platelet activation, induce vasodilation, inhibit smooth muscle cell proliferation, and act against infection. Activated platelets generally have opposite effects from these. They secrete platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), which stimulates smooth muscle growth, serotonin, which is a platelet agonist, and a number of agents that promote further platelet aggregation. However, activated platelets also produce NO through the enzymatic functions of the constitutive form of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). The primary functions of this capability are not yet completely understood. Due to its low molecular weight and high diffusivity, NO is quickly transported from …

Intrasteric Inhibition Of Atp Binding Is Not Required To Prevent Unregulated Autophosphorylation Or Signaling By The Insulin Receptor, Mark Frankel, Ararat J. Ablooglu, Joseph W. Leone, Elena Rusinova, J. B. A. Ross, Robert L. Heinrikson, Ronald A. Kohanski

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Receptor tyrosine kinases may use intrasteric inhibition to suppress autophosphorylation prior to growth factor stimulation. To test this hypothesis we made an Asp1161Ala mutant in the activation loop that relieved intrasteric inhibition of the unphosphorylated insulin receptor (IR) and its recombinant cytoplasmic kinase domain (IRKD) without affecting the activated state. Solution studies with the unphosphorylated mutant IRKD demonstrated conformational changes and greater catalytic efficiency from a 10-fold increase in kcat and a 15-fold-lower Km ATP although Km peptide was unchanged. Kinetic parameters of the autophosphorylated mutant and wild-type kinase domains were virtually identical. The Asp1161Ala mutation increased the …

Multiplewavelength Optical Observations Of A Long-Lived Meteor Trail, B. R. Clemesha, A. F. Medeiros, D. Gobbi, H. Takahashi, P. P. Batista, Michael J. Taylor

All Physics Faculty Publications

A long‐lived meteor trail has been observed at wavelengths of 572.5 nm, 557.7 nm, 630.0 nm, 865.5 nm and in the near infrared band from 715 to 930 nm. The trail was detected at all these wavelengths, with the possible exception of 865.5 nm, where its identification was marginal. It was seen longest (17 minutes) through the wide band NIR 715‐930 nm filter. The fact that the trail was only marginally visible in the 865.5 nm (0–1) band of molecular oxygen, and was strongest in the wide‐band NIR image, raises serious doubts about an earlier suggestion that the infrared light …

A Theoretical Study Of The Effects Of Insulators On Electron Transport Through Electrostatic Tube Lenses, T. G. Anderson, B. G. Birdsey, S. M. Woeher, Mark A. Rosenberry, Timothy J. Gay

Timothy J. Gay Publications

Using the computer program SIMION 6, we have studied the effects of spurious insulator charging on the trajectories of electrons through electrostatic tube lenses. We considered lens elements with flat ends, spaced a distance g apart, whose inner diameter D=10g. For the standard cases of drift tubes, two-element lenses, and einzel lenses, we found that charging effects are eliminated if t/g>3.5, where t is the distance between the lens inner diameter and the charged spacing insulator.

Survival Of Avian Carcasses And Photographic Evidence Of Predators And Scavengers, Richard M. Kostecke, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier Jul 2001

Survival Of Avian Carcasses And Photographic Evidence Of Predators And Scavengers, Richard M. Kostecke, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Scavenging of carcasses may bias estimates of mortality following the use of pesticides. To assess carcass survival, we monitored bird carcasses in crop stubble, grassland, roadside, and wooded habitats in east-central South Dakota in early spring. Survival rates differed among habitat types in 1997 but not in 1998. Survival rates did not differ among species of carcass in 1997 or 1998. Within 5 d, 66% of carcasses had been scavenged in both 1997 and 1998. To assess potential hazards of secondary poisoning, we used infrared-triggered camera systems to identify predators and scavengers of live birds and bird carcasses. Mammals ( …

Semantic Operators And Fixed-Point Theory In Logic Programming, Anthony K. Seda, Pascal Hitzler Jul 2001

Semantic Operators And Fixed-Point Theory In Logic Programming, Anthony K. Seda, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider rather general operators mapping valuations to (sets of) valuations in the context of the semantics of logic programming languages. This notion generalizes several of the standard operators encountered in this subject and is inspired by earlier work of M.C. Fitting. The fixed points of such operators play a fundamental role in logic programming semantics by providing standard models of logic programs and also in determining the computability properties of these standard models. We discuss some of our recent work employing topological ideas, in conjunction with order theory, to establish methods by which one can find the fixed points …

Second-Order Uncertainty As A Bridge Between Probabilistic And Fuzzy Approaches, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

On the example of physics, we show that the traditional one-level description is not completely adequate. For a more adequate structure, a hierarchical description of uncertainty is necessary, which supplements the more traditional first-order uncertainty with second-order, third-order and more sophisticated models. In particular, the second-order approach seems to provide a bridge between probabilistic and fuzzy approaches to uncertainty.
