Relativistic Effects On Interchannel Coupling In Atomic Photoionization: The Photoelectron Angular Distribution Of Xe, Oliver Hemmers, S. T. Manson, M. M. Sant'anna, P. Focke, H. Wang, I. A. Sellin, Dennis W. Lindle Jul 2001

Relativistic Effects On Interchannel Coupling In Atomic Photoionization: The Photoelectron Angular Distribution Of Xe, Oliver Hemmers, S. T. Manson, M. M. Sant'anna, P. Focke, H. Wang, I. A. Sellin, Dennis W. Lindle

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Measurements of the photoelectron angular-distribution asymmetry parameter β for Xe 5s photoionization have been performed in the 80–200 eV photon-energy region. The results show a substantial deviation from the nonrelativistic value of β=2 and provide a clear signature of significant relativistic effects in interchannel coupling.

Dr. Darwin Meet The Great Physician, Alan L. Gillen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Darwinists have repeatedly used the terms “constrained” and “failing” physiology to describe our heart and blood vessels. After all, the leading cause of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Therefore, by Darwinian reasoning, the anatomical and physiological design of the circulatory system must be bad, and evolution in its randomness has given us a “raw” deal. This position is stated by Nesse and Williams (1995, p. 5), “Bones, physiology, the nervous system — the body has thousands of consummate designs that elicit our wonder and admiration. By contrast, however, many aspects …

An Investigation On The Impact Of Implementing Visual Quantum Mechanics On Student Learning And Student Instructor Beliefs, Lawrence Escalada Jul 2001

An Investigation On The Impact Of Implementing Visual Quantum Mechanics On Student Learning And Student Instructor Beliefs, Lawrence Escalada

Faculty Work

Aspects of the Visual Quantum Mechanics instructional materials have been adapted and implemented into a university physical science course for pre-service elementary education majors and various high school physics classrooms. These materials utilize a learning cycle pedagogy involving interactive, simulation computer programs and inexpensive devices to introduce basic quantum physics ideas within the context of fundamental physics concepts. A brief description of how these materials and strategies were adapted and implemented in high school classrooms will be provided. The results found on student conceptual learning and student/instructor attitudes and beliefs will also be briefly discussed.

Stochastic Properties Of Spacings In A Single-Outlier Exponential Model, Baha-Eldin Khaledi, Subhash C. Kochar Jul 2001

Stochastic Properties Of Spacings In A Single-Outlier Exponential Model, Baha-Eldin Khaledi, Subhash C. Kochar

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let X1,..., Xn be independent exponential random variables with possibly different scale parameters. Kochar and Korwar [J. Multivar. Anal. 57 (1996)] conjectured that, in this case, the successive normalized spacings are increasing according to hazard rate ordering. In this article, we prove this conjecture in the case of a single-outlier exponential model when all except one of the parameters are identical. We also prove that the spacings are more dispersed and larger in the sense of hazard rate ordering when the vector of scale parameters is more dispersed in the sense of majorization.

Influence Of The Earthquake Cycle And Lithospheric Rheology On The Dynamics Of The Eastern California Shear Ζone, R. Malservisi, K. Furlong, Timothy H. Dixon Jul 2001

Influence Of The Earthquake Cycle And Lithospheric Rheology On The Dynamics Of The Eastern California Shear Ζone, R. Malservisi, K. Furlong, Timothy H. Dixon

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The Eastern California Shear Zone is bounded by the high heat flow region of the Basin and Range province and the low heat flow region of the Sierra Nevada block. This difference in thermal state influences the rheology of the lower crust/upper mantle, resulting in a viscosity contrast between the two regions. We analyze the effect of such a contrast on the kinematics and dynamics of the shear zone with numerical models. This viscosity contrast drives asymmetric strain accumulation in the upper crust, producing an asymmetric surface velocity field. An additional consequence of this strain pattern is the potential for …

Probing "Life Qualification" Through Expanded Voir Dire, John H. Blume, Sheri Lynn Johnson, A. Brian Threlkeld

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The conventional wisdom is that most trials are won or lost in jury selection. If this is true, then in many capital cases, jury selection is literally a matter of life or death. Given these high stakes and Supreme Court case law setting out standards for voir dire in capital cases, one might expect a sophisticated and thoughtful process in which each side carefully considers which jurors would be best in the particular case. Instead, it turns out that voir dire in capital cases is woefully ineffective at the most elementary task--weeding out unqualified jurors.

Empirical evidence reveals that many …

Factors That Effect The Course/Subject Selection Process Of High School Students Of African Descent, Denise-Bonnette Jones

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Advanced societies require technologically literate citizens who can solve problems, manage complexities, find and use resources, and learn and apply evolving technologies (Owen, 1997). Today's rapidly changing economy is defined by constantly evolving technologies and falling behind is a recipe for disaster (Augustine, 1997). At the forefront is a reality that for most people, particularly the youth, the period during and beyond high school is marked by important career decision-making tasks. Determining what to do next in their lives remains an important but arduous developmental task for the youth leaving secondary school. As the world of work becomes more complex …

A Complex Variables Techniques For Approximating The Derivatives Of Real-Valued Functions., Beverly M. Brown Jul 2001

A Complex Variables Techniques For Approximating The Derivatives Of Real-Valued Functions., Beverly M. Brown

Theses (Pre-2016)

The numerical solution of an n-th order differential equation relies on an accurate approximation of the derivative. A standard method of approximating the derivative of a real-valued function f at a point Xo is to use the central difference formula f ' (xo) 􁪽 [f (x, + h) - f (x, - h)] / 2h . An error analysis of this formula shows that the truncation error is 0(h2) while the round off error is 0(h-1). A major dilemma in using this formula is the fact that using a small h increases the round off error. In this thesis, a …

Even Kakutani Equivalence And The Loose Block Independence Property For Positive Entropy Zᵈ Actions, Aimee S. A. Johnson, A. A. Şahin

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

In this paper we define the loose block independence property for positive entropy Zᵈ actions and extend some of the classical results to higher dimensions. In particular, we prove that two loose block independent actions are even Kakutani equivalent if and only if they have the same entropy. We also prove that for d > 1 the ergodic, isometric extensions of the positive entropy loose block independent Zᵈ actions are also loose block independent.

Can Students Sue When Schools Don't Make The Grade? The Washington Assessment Of Student Learning And Educational Malpractice, Rebecca R. Glasgow Jul 2001

Can Students Sue When Schools Don't Make The Grade? The Washington Assessment Of Student Learning And Educational Malpractice, Rebecca R. Glasgow

Washington Law Review

Washington's Academic Achievement and Accountability Statute (AAA Statute) creates a statewide system of school accountability. It also requires that all students pass the tenth-grade level of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning standardized test (WASL) to receive a diploma. Unfortunately, when this graduation requirement takes effect in 2008, many students will not receive diplomas because they will be unable to pass the WASL before graduation. Some of these students will have met all local graduation requirements, so the only graduation requirement they will not be able to meet will be the statewide requirement that they pass the WASL. Their WASL …

Educating International Security Practitioners: Preparing To Face The Demands Of The 21st Century International Security Environment, Robert H. Dorff Dr., Daniel J. Kaufman Brigadier General, James M. Smith Dr., Linda P. Brady Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The authors examine the challenges of the 21st century international security environment to which future strategic leaders and policy practitioners will need to respond. More specifically, they offer the reader insights into security studies and leadership development at their respective levels (military undergraduate, civilian undergraduate, traditional and nontraditional graduate, and senior military officer) and institutions (including research centers and professional outreach programs). The goal is to inform a broader audience about what is currently being done in the way of educating strategic practitioners at these various institutions, and what might need to be done differently or better.

Text Segmentation Of The Archimedes Palimpsest Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Charles Dickinson Jul 2001

Text Segmentation Of The Archimedes Palimpsest Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Charles Dickinson

Theses

Digital imaging methods have been developed and adapted to analyze the so-called "Archimedes Palimpsest", which is a 10th century overwritten manuscript including the oldest known copies of seven of the treatises of Archimedes. Multispectral digital images of five of the leaves of the palimpsest have been collected, processed, and analyzed using principal component analysis and orthogonal subspace projection techniques. These methods have been applied to "strip off the later overwriting to reveal the original text.

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Gray wolf (Canis lupus) populations were eliminated from Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming, as well as adjacent southwestern Canada by the 1930s. After human-caused mortality of wolves in southwestern Canada began to be regulated in the 1960s, populations began expanding southward. Dispersing individuals occasionally reached the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States, but lacked legal protection there until 1974, after passage of the Endangered Species Act of 1973. In 1986, wolves from Canada successfully raised a litter of pups in Glacier National Park, Montana, and a small population was soon established. In 1995 and 1996, wolves from western …

Organic Grapes And Wine : A Guide To Production, Gerry Parlevliet, Steven Mccoy Jul 2001

Organic Grapes And Wine : A Guide To Production, Gerry Parlevliet, Steven Mccoy

Bulletins 4000 -

The tastebuds, health concerns and environmental conscience of affluent consumers are demanding more organically grown food than producers worldwide can supply. Growing consumer concerns about the effects of synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilisers on human health and the environment have boosted world trade in organic products by a rate of about 20-30 per cent a year for the past 10 years. World trade was estimated to be worth $US 21.6 billion in 2000 and is expected to reach US$100 billion by the year 2006.

The Australian market for organic products alone is valued at $200-$250 million - with exports estimated …

Predictably Incoherent Judgments, Cass R. Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman, David Schkade, Ilana Ritov Jul 2001

Predictably Incoherent Judgments, Cass R. Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman, David Schkade, Ilana Ritov

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

When people make moral or legal judgments in isolation, they produce a pattern of outcomes that they would themselves reject, if only they could see that pattern as a whole. A major reason is that human thinking is category-bound. When people see a case in isolation, they spontaneously compare it to other cases that are mainly drawn from the same category of harms. When people are required to compare cases that involve different kinds of harms, judgments that appear sensible when the problems are considered separately often appear incoherent and arbitrary in the broader context. Another major source of incoherence …

The Expansion Center And Dynamical Age Of The Galactic Supernova Remnant Cassiopeia A, John R. Thorstensen, Robert A. Fesen, Sidney Van Den Bergh

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present proper motions for 21 bright main shell and 17 faint, higher velocity, outer ejecta knots in the Cas A supernova remnant and use them to derive new estimates for the remnant's expansion center and age. Our study included 1951–1976 Palomar 5 m prime focus plates, 1988–1999 CCD images from the KPNO 4 m and MDM 2.4 m telescopes, and 1999 HST WFPC2 images. Measurable positions covered a 23 to 41 yr time span for most knots, with a few outer knots followed for almost 48 yr. We derive an expansion center of α(J2000) = 23h23m …

An Information Theoretic Methodology For Prestructuring Neural Networks, Bjorn Chambless, George G. Lendaris, Martin Zwick Jul 2001

An Information Theoretic Methodology For Prestructuring Neural Networks, Bjorn Chambless, George G. Lendaris, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Absence of a priori knowledge about a problem domain typically forces use of overly complex neural network structures. An information-theoretic method based on calculating information transmission is applied to training data to obtain a priori knowledge that is useful for prestructuring (reducing complexity) of neural networks. The method is applied to a continuous system, and it is shown that such prestructuring reduces training time, and enhances generalization capability.
