The Considerations Of Interpretation Through The Function Of Imagery In The Song Of Songs And Its Application To The Current Believing Community, Sanggeol Lyu
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Song of Songs parallels with the synthetic method of literary criticism. This criticism places value on the text because it is literature for the believing community to maximize the celebration of delight and consummation of love within marriage and it deemphasizes the search for the hidden meaning beyond the text. Literary criticism demonstrates not only the function of the literary message but also the aesthetic effect, and is suitable and adaptable to explain and help determine the identity of today's young adults. The study focuses on the wisdom of others and how it is adapted for today. It also …
Metaphysical Detectives And Postmodern Spaces, Or The Case Of The Missing Boundaries, Richard A. Swope
Metaphysical Detectives And Postmodern Spaces, Or The Case Of The Missing Boundaries, Richard A. Swope
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Taking as its point of departure Henri Lefebvre's contention that "(Social) space is a (social) product," my dissertation explores the contemporary American novels of Pynchon, Acker, Reed, Auster, DeLillo, and McElroy as well as the two recent films Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor and their dramatization of the production of twentieth-century social space. I approach these works as metaphysical detective stories which evoke the classic detective figure only to frustrate his impulse to solve and contain. Following Foucault's contention that "space is fundamental to any exercise of power," I suggest that the detective figure is significant to an understanding …
Generic Pronouns And Their Influence On The Speakers' Language Awareness, Maike Engelhardt
Generic Pronouns And Their Influence On The Speakers' Language Awareness, Maike Engelhardt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The English language is a genderless language in which nouns receive grammatical gender through natural gender assignment. The generic pronoun encoded in English is the pronoun he, which next to its secondary meaning of the generic also has the primary meaning of the third person masculine singular. Following the moderate version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, English speaking societies may therefore be considered androcentric societies, since the unmarked use of the generic he makes everyone in this society male until explicitly proven otherwise. In this thesis I explore the history of the generic pronoun in English and offer suggestions for a …
Theorie Und Praxis Im Dramatischen Werk Rainer Lewandowskis, Ulrike E. Taylor
Theorie Und Praxis Im Dramatischen Werk Rainer Lewandowskis, Ulrike E. Taylor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine selected works of the contemporary German playwright Rainer Lewandowski. This project will introduce Rainer Lewandowski's style and innovative ways of writing and directing plays by first analyzing two significant monographs, one about the German filmmaker Alexander Kluge and the other about the Romantic composer and writer E. T. A. Hoffmann. Second, I will show the importance of Rainer Lewandowski's children's theater, for example his stage adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffmann's children's story The Strange Child. Next, his musicals Me, Marlene, Mambo Mortale and Don't Panik, and his plays Tonight Neither Hamlet …

Multimedia -Assisted Reading In Spanish And Its Relationship With The Cognitive Control Of Field Dependence And Field Independence, Laura Janes Little
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines the influence of the cognitive controls of field independence and field dependence on the use of a multimedia-assisted reading program and reading recall. The participants were 11 university students of intermediate Spanish as a second language. The participants were classified as field dependent or field independent based on GEFT scores. The participants read a passage about Mayan architecture that was converted to a multimedia-assisted format. Participants could access as many or as few of the multimedia aids as they chose. After completing the reading, a recall measure was obtained in which participants wrote everything they could recall …

Student Variables As A Predictor Of E -Course Completion, Norma Helen Hodge-Thompson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study is to determine student variables that predict E-course completion. Research questions were defined for investigating the relationship between student demographics and E-course completion. Student demographics include age, gender, GPA, student major, access to technology and employment. The student demographic variables were correlated with course completion and through logistic regression were determined to be predictors of E-course completion. The research population for this study was 3453 Marshall University students enrolled in E-courses from the spring semester of 1998 through the fall semester of 2000. Data for the study was obtained from the Marshall University Institutional Research …
A Hermeneutic Study: The Impacts Of The Harm Reduction Approach On Women Living In Abusive Relationships, Darla Segelstrom
A Hermeneutic Study: The Impacts Of The Harm Reduction Approach On Women Living In Abusive Relationships, Darla Segelstrom
Theses and Graduate Projects
Despite the number of services available to battered women, few focus on working with those who remain in the abusive relationships. The Harm Reduction approach is one geared towards working with women who have not yet made the decision to leave their abusive partner. This hermeneutic, interpretive study of women's narratives revealed that the harm reduction approach provided non-judgmental support, which was conducive to increasing women's overall awareness of themselves, their situation, and their options. It is recommended that social workers and other human service agencies recognize the complexity, individuality and strength in each battered woman they encounter, facilitate a …

Code-Switching In The Hispanic Community Of Bloomington, Illinois: A Case Study, Rachel Dziallo
Code-Switching In The Hispanic Community Of Bloomington, Illinois: A Case Study, Rachel Dziallo
Honors Projects
This present case study of code-switching is a quasi-replication of Valdes' (1976) research on code-switching patterns, in which one individual is studied in various conversational situations. In the study carried out by Valdes, the focus was on the presence of code-switching patterns in different situations in order to determine the significance of one native speaker with various interlocutors. By realizing this study she concluded the following: (1) the use of code-switching by the principal infonnant does not suggest a lack of language skills; (2) bilingual speakers take full advantage of rhetorical devices to dramatize their speech; (3) regularity of patterned …

Mexican-American Women In The United States: Acculturation Experiences, Language And Self-Identity, Diana Hammer '01
Mexican-American Women In The United States: Acculturation Experiences, Language And Self-Identity, Diana Hammer '01
Honors Projects
As a society composed of multiple ethnic groups, the United States is a place where the processes of acculturation and assimilation are never-ending. Today, large numbers of Mexicans, in particular, are immigrating to the U.S. According to Gordon's assimilation model (1964), Anglo-American and Mexican-American ethnic groups will one day be indistinguishable. At the individual level, Gordon believes this process begins with acculturation as members of each group adjust to the differing customs of the other. Park (1928) and Stonequist (1935, 1937) agree that finding a compromise can be especially difficult for "marginal" individuals who have identities in both cultures. From …
Second Language Acquisition And Its Practical Application: Evaluating French Textbooks At The Secondary School Level, Jacelyn O'Roark '01
Second Language Acquisition And Its Practical Application: Evaluating French Textbooks At The Secondary School Level, Jacelyn O'Roark '01
Honors Projects
A textbook is an essential starting point for education in a foreign language classroom. That is why it is so crucial that teachers take the time to consider a text extensively. There are multiple textbooks on the market for secondary French teachers from which to choose. What makes a textbook more appropriate for one teacher or one class of students than another? I believe that we must start by looking at some of the information that is available that explains how students learn a second language. Then, it is important to consider some of the ways that the teaching of …

A Comparison Of Two Arts Programs Implemented In Two Elementary Schools In Hamilton County, Tennessee, Jayne Denton
A Comparison Of Two Arts Programs Implemented In Two Elementary Schools In Hamilton County, Tennessee, Jayne Denton
Honors Theses
A wide variety of theoretical backgrounds can exist between two different art programs. This paper observes and compares two different art programs that are currently being implemented in two elementary schools of the Hamilton County Department of Education. The theoretical background of the first program, Arts Integration (AI), promotes the teaching art in combination with other subjects. The theoretical background of the second program, Discipline-Based Art Education(DBAE), promotes the teaching of art as its own subject area. First, this paper briefly describes the history of each program, including explanations of the curriculum, program antecedents, and both positive and negative critical analysis. …
Co-Constructed Interpersonal Perceptions Of Self: Meaning-Making In The Astrological Consultation, Jean Alice Richey
Co-Constructed Interpersonal Perceptions Of Self: Meaning-Making In The Astrological Consultation, Jean Alice Richey
Communication
This research study employs qualitative narrative analysis in order to develop an understanding of co-constructed meaning of self-identity within the astrological practitioner-client relationship. The literature review includes theoretical perspectives from interpersonal communication, the social construction of reality and of self-identity, and transpersonal studies. Three emergent themes from six narrative interviews are discussed in regard to co-constructed constitutive interpretations of self-identity: (1) cultural stranger/insider standpoint, (2) worldview metaphors, (3) and recognition of a socially embedded self. The consultation narrative illustrates the constitution of identity in interaction with an other who is afforded the status of "professional" regarding the interaction itself. Like …

Mediated Identity And Negotiated Tradition: The Inupiaq Atigi, 1850--2000, Cydny Brynn Martin
Anthropology
The Inupiaq parka and associated activities constitute an unbroken practice from the prehistoric to modern times. The overall form and use of the garment remains constant while materials and technology evolve. Inupiaq parkas, often categorized as art because of their craft, creativity, and aesthetic appeal, also serve as tangible reminders of cultural abstractions. When considered within the age-old Inupiaq subsistence system, the position of women and the role of parka sewing suggests that both are critical to the maintenance of the human/animal relationship central to Inupiaq culture. The Inupiaq parka is seen to mediate between the physical and spiritual relationship …
