The Effects Of Instructional Rubrics On Learning To Write, Heidi Goodrich Andrade
The Effects Of Instructional Rubrics On Learning To Write, Heidi Goodrich Andrade
Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship
This study examines the impact of instructional rubrics on eighth grade students' writing and on their knowledge of the qualities of effective writing. Students in the treatment group were given instructional rubrics that articulated the criteria and gradations of quality for three assigned essays. Students in the control group wrote the same three essays but did not receive the rubric. Students in the treatment group received, on average, higher scores on one of the three essays. Questionnaires administered at the end of the study revealed that students in the treatment group tended to identify more of the criteria by which …

Between- Or Within-Culture Variation? Culture Group As A Moderator Of The Relations Between Individual Differences And Resource Allocation Preferences, Gustavo Carlo, Scott C. Roesch, George P. Knight, Silvia H. Koller
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Recent theoretical discussion of the influence of between- and within-culture factors on social behaviors suggests that both approaches may be useful. The present study was designed to investigate the joint influence of sociocultural (between-group) and individual (within-group) factors on resource allocation preferences. Brazilian (n = 166) and European-American (n = 99) children with ages ranging from 37 to 140 months were administered a resource allocation task, which consisted of distributing rewards to themselves or to an acquaintance. As expected, individualistic resource allocation preferences decreased with age, whereas competitive and cooperative resource allocation preferences increased with age. Culture group, the task-specific …

Abstracting Aristotle’S Philosophy Of Mathematics, John J. Cleary
Abstracting Aristotle’S Philosophy Of Mathematics, John J. Cleary
Research Resources
In the history of science perhaps the most influential Aristotelian division was that
between mathematics and physics. From our modern perspective this seems like an unfortunate deviation from the Platonic unification of the two disciplines, which guided Kepler and Galileo towards the modern scientific revolution. By contrast, Aristotle’s sharp distinction between the disciplines seems to have led to a barren scholasticism in physics, together with an arid instrumentalism in Ptolemaic astronomy. On the positive side, however, astronomy was liberated from commonsense realism for the conceptual experiments of Aristarchus of Samos, whose heliocentric hypothesis was not adopted by later astronomers because …
