Review Of Das Straßburger Eulenspiegelbuch: Studien Zu Entstehungs-Geschichtlichen Voraussetzungen Der Ältesten Drucküberlieferung, By Jürgen Schulz-Grobert, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jun 2001

Review Of Das Straßburger Eulenspiegelbuch: Studien Zu Entstehungs-Geschichtlichen Voraussetzungen Der Ältesten Drucküberlieferung, By Jürgen Schulz-Grobert, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Schulz-Grobert argues that scholars' pursuit of a phantom Low German original, and their "fixation" on Herman Bote as its author, have directed scholarly attention away from the role the editors in Strassburg played in its production. While TE scholarship to date is in agreement that a Strassburg editor had a hand in the final version of the book, Schulz-Grobert argues that the circle of humanists and literati associated with Grüninger's press in Strassburg were alone responsible for producing the book. There is no need to assume the existence of a Low German original, he states, nor does the "ERMAN B" acrostic, …

Leadership In The Continuous Improvement Process, Jim L. Kline Jun 2001

Leadership In The Continuous Improvement Process, Jim L. Kline

Theses and Graduate Projects

Companies are formed for many reasons, but without profitability, they will not survive. Therefore, it remains the focus of the company's employees to maintain profitability. New ideas and improvements must be implemented continuously for the company to maintain and increase their profitability.

The employees responsible for continuously implementing these new ideas and improvements will significantly contribute to the success of the company and its profitability. The key to their success is the use of positive leadership and a continuous improvement process. This study presents two theories that support this claim: Masaaki lmai's continuous improvement process, and James MacGregor Burns' theory …

Review Of The Phonology Of Portuguese, David J. Silva Jun 2001

Review Of The Phonology Of Portuguese, David J. Silva

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

As noted by its publisher in LINGUIST 12.390, The Phonology of Portuguese (TPP) provides "an accurate description of the phonological system of Portuguese"-referencing both European and Brazilian varieties, and seeks to explain phonological and morphological phenomena "within the light of current phonological theories." With TPP, authors Mateus and d'Andrade have delivered a concise and comprehensive English-language volume on Portuguese phonology, nicely complementing the pre-generative English language version of J. Mattoso Camara's 1970 work, The Portuguese Language (translated by Anthony Naro).

Effects Of Professional Interpreter Services On The Utilization Of Health Care Services Of Different Language/Cultural Groups, Amanda Fleming Petrik Jun 2001

Effects Of Professional Interpreter Services On The Utilization Of Health Care Services Of Different Language/Cultural Groups, Amanda Fleming Petrik

Dissertations and Theses

Immigration has affected the number of U.S. residents who speak little or no English. These residents have limited English proficiency. Research studies have indicated discrepancies in medical interpretation and medical care. However, differences in health care between the language/ cultural groups are rarely recognized as health discrepancies.

This research project is a quasi-experimental design, testing differences between the four major language groups in the greater Portland, Oregon area. These four major language/cultural groups speak Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish and Russian.

A secondary data analysis was used to compare the differences in utilization of emergency room services, routine services, and urgent care …

Univercity News (2001-06-04)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Image Retrieval Knowledge And Art History Curriculum In The Digital Age, Hsin-Liang Chen Jun 2001

Image Retrieval Knowledge And Art History Curriculum In The Digital Age, Hsin-Liang Chen

University Libraries Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study investigates end-users' image queries by comparing the features of the queries to those identified in previous studies proposed by Enser and McGregor (1992), Jorgensen (1995) and Fidel (1997) in order to discover the utility of these existing features for the art history field and identify any expansions or new features. It also examines relationships between user search tasks and image query modes. Enser and McGregor's categories of Unique and Non-unique, and Jorgensen's classes of Location, Literal Object, Art Historical Information, People and People-related Attributes received high degrees of matching by three reviewers. This finding can be applied to …

Review: Lionel Gossman, Basel In The Age Of Burckhardt. A Study In Unseasonable Ideas, Benn Williams Jun 2001

Review: Lionel Gossman, Basel In The Age Of Burckhardt. A Study In Unseasonable Ideas, Benn Williams

Swiss American Historical Society Review

"Monotonie sans egale" or sanctuary for "unbridled thinkers"?

Being human and prone to forming first impressions, this reviewer glanced at the full title of the text under review, and saw red flags rising. First, in the spirit of full disclosure, this non-Swiss reviewer has only "visited" Basel once: an unpleasant-and unexpected-wintry layover courtesy of a French rail strike. Second, seeing "unseasonable ideas" in the same title as anyone other than Nietzsche raises one's hackles. Third, while the works of Burckhardt enjoy renewed interest among art historians and publishers, he remains largely ignored by "new" cultural and intellectual historians and humanists …

Internet Business Model Patents: Obvious By Analogy, Margo A. Bagley Jun 2001

Internet Business Model Patents: Obvious By Analogy, Margo A. Bagley

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

This Article contends that part of the problem of Internet business model patents is the narrow view of analogous art employed by judges and USPTO examiners which largely excludes relevant "real-world" prior art in the determination of non-obviousness under § 103 of the Patent Act. Consequently, part of the solution lies in helping courts and the USPTO properly to define analogous art for a particular invention. To do so, judges and examiners must recognize the interchangeability of computer programming (i.e. "e-world" activities) to perform a function, with human or mechanical performance of the same function (i.e. "real world" activities). Such …

Towards More Realistic (E.G., Non-Associative) And- And Or-Operations In Fuzzy Logic, Jesus Martinez, Leopoldo Macias, Ammar Esper, Jesus Chaparro, Vick Alvarado, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2001

Towards More Realistic (E.G., Non-Associative) And- And Or-Operations In Fuzzy Logic, Jesus Martinez, Leopoldo Macias, Ammar Esper, Jesus Chaparro, Vick Alvarado, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

How is fuzzy logic usually formalized? There are many seemingly reasonable requirements that a logic should satisfy: e.g., since A&B and B&A are the same, the corresponding and-operation should be commutative. Similarly, since A&A means the same as A, we should expect that the and-operation should also satisfy this property, etc. It turns out to be impossible to satisfy all these seemingly natural requirements, so usually, some requirements are picked as absolutely true (like commutativity or associativity), and others are ignored if they contradict to the picked ones. This idea leads to a neat mathematical theory, but the analysis of …

Foreign Country Priorities In The Internationalization Process: A Measure And An Exploratory Test On British Firms, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Derek S. Pugh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

After a critical analysis of the psychic distance aspect of the Uppsala model of internationalization and empirical studies to test it, this paper proposes a measure to enable comparison between target foreign countries in the priority given them in the internationalization process. An International Priority Index is developed for each target country, and used as the dependent variable in a model to analyze the effects of the independent variables of size of market, affluence of market, geographical distance and cultural distance on foreign country priority choice of home country firms. The measure and the model are given a first test …

The Emergence Of Website Privacy Norms, Steven A. Hetcher Jun 2001

The Emergence Of Website Privacy Norms, Steven A. Hetcher

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Part I of the Article will first look at the original privacy norms that emerged at the Web's inception in the early 1990s. Two groups have been the main contributors to the emergence of these norms; the thousands of commercial websites on the early Web, on the one hand, and the millions of users of the early Web, on the other hand. The main structural feature of these norms was that websites benefitted through the largely unrestricted collection of personal data while consumers suffered injury due to the degradation of their personal privacy from this data collection. In other words, …

Role Of Traditional Birth Attendants In Improving Reproductive Health: Lessons From The Family Health Project, Sindh, A Islam, F A. Malik Jun 2001

Role Of Traditional Birth Attendants In Improving Reproductive Health: Lessons From The Family Health Project, Sindh, A Islam, F A. Malik

Community Health Sciences

Objective: PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Despite strenuous efforts, the maternal mortality rate in Pakistan remains high. The national figure of 340 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births tends to hide the fact that in some rural areas it is as high as 700 per 100,000 live births. Not surprisingly, in Pakistan only 20% of births are attended by a trained health professional. In most rural areas, home to almost 70% of the population, traditional birth attendants (TBAs) deliver 90% of the births. TBAs, therefore, play a crucial role in the delivery of maternal health care in Pakistan. Realizing the importance …

Analysing Construction Risk : A Project Management Model, P K Dey Jun 2001

Analysing Construction Risk : A Project Management Model, P K Dey

IIMB Management Review

The success parameters for any project are ontime completion within the specific budget, and requisite performance or meeting the technical requirements. The main barriers to achievement are changes in the project environment. The problem multiplies with the size of the project. Large-scale construction projects are exposed to an uncertain environment because they are subject to such factors as planning and design complexity, presence of various interest groups (project owner, owner’s project group, consultants, contractors, vendors etc), availability of resources (materials, equipment, funds etc), climatic environment, the economic and political environment and statutory regulations. Other risk factors include the complexity of …

Literacy, Womanism And Struggle: Reflections On The Practices Of An African Woman, Nombuso Dlamini Jun 2001

Literacy, Womanism And Struggle: Reflections On The Practices Of An African Woman, Nombuso Dlamini

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the Essay:

As I begin writing about the importance of, and interconnections among literacy, womanism and struggle, I feel myself drawn enthusiastically to treasured memories of my mother’s life and the influence she has had in shaping my theoretical and professional undertakings. Going back into my childhood, I can surely categorize my mother then as having been a literacy worker as she taught at an elementary school, a womanist because of her concern for and actions about issues of women equity, and a political activist because of her struggles against apartheid. My interest here is in tracing a …

Review Of Syntactic Transfer, Contact-Induced Change, And The Evolution Of Bilingual Mixed Codes: Focus On Karelian-Russian Language Alternation, By Anneli Sarhimaa, Nancy C. Dorian Jun 2001

Review Of Syntactic Transfer, Contact-Induced Change, And The Evolution Of Bilingual Mixed Codes: Focus On Karelian-Russian Language Alternation, By Anneli Sarhimaa, Nancy C. Dorian

German Faculty Research and Scholarship

The data that underlie Anneli Sarhimaa's excellent study were gathered between 1989 and 1992, under restrictive field circumstances. Visits to Karelia required what the author terms “intricate co-operation with academic and public authorities in Russia” (p. 76), and the duration of any stay was limited to a few weeks. From her home base in Finland, she made short visits to three Central Karelian villages in the summers of 1989 and 1991, working with additional Central Karelian speakers resident in the capital city of Karelia in the winters of 1990 and 1991; in 1992, a two-week trip allowed her to work …

Is It Digitall? Who's Invited To The Digital Revolution?, Sarah E. Dempsey

Masters Theses

A significant issue surrounding the increasing dependence of U.S. society on technological products surrounds questions of equity. Research suggests that our increased dependence on technology has acted to further stratify our society in regards to gender. A growing body of literature which takes a critical stance of technology acknowledges that there are gaps between technology 'haves' and 'have-nots' (Aronowitz, 1988; Brosnan, 1998; Harvey, 2000; Loader, 1998; Millar, 1998), suggesting that utopian perspectives of technology need to be re-examined. Research has addressed issues regarding gender politics and technology (Caputi, 1988; Jansen, 1989; Millar, 1998; Zimmerman, 1983), yet little research has examined …
