Caught In The Middle: The Construction, Expression, And Transformation Of Identity Among Haitian Youth In Montreal., Earl Floyd Scooter Pegram Jan 2001

Caught In The Middle: The Construction, Expression, And Transformation Of Identity Among Haitian Youth In Montreal., Earl Floyd Scooter Pegram

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines identity issues among Haitian youth in Montreal, Quebec (Canada). Because Haitians are the largest group of "visible minorities" in the province and are an integral part of the Quebec mosaic, the distinctive "sense of belonging" felt by youth in the Haitian community necessitates further inquiry into what connections they (Haitian youth) have with both the majority Quebecois culture and the minority Haitian immigrant culture of Montreal. Since Quebec is a Francophone society in a North America that is majority Anglophone, this linguistic and cultural confusion sometimes results in immigrant youth assuming multiple identities in order to "fit …

Embracing The Void: Nietzsche's "Zarathustra" And The Political., James Daniel Stewart Jan 2001

Embracing The Void: Nietzsche's "Zarathustra" And The Political., James Daniel Stewart

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores Nietzsche's political theory through an analysis of his major work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is demonstrated that the narrative structure of Zarathustra follows from a politically-grounded critique of collective human existence. Nietzsche critiques the state and mass society as inherently repressive. He critiques the concept of the community and friendship as producing ressentiment and bad conscience. One of the central metaphors in Zarathustra proves to be that of nausea, arising from contempt for the mediocre masses of humanity and the realization of the chaotic and contingent nature of existence. Through nausea, the individual necessarily becomes separated from …

The Effect Of Prime Word Processing On The Semantic Priming Effect., Satomi Imai Jan 2001

The Effect Of Prime Word Processing On The Semantic Priming Effect., Satomi Imai

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In three experiments the effect of ease of prime word access on semantic priming was investigated. Ease of prime access was manipulated by prime word frequency, by prime degradation, and by prime repetition. Primes accessed faster (high frequency prime words, repeated primes) should produce larger priming than those accessed more slowly (low frequency prime words, degraded prime words). The time course of priming was also examined by comparing a 150 ms SOA to a 500 ms. The results partially supported the hypothesis. There was a prime word frequency effect on priming in both short and long SOA conditions. High frequency …

Penn And West Philadelphia, Dale Mezzacappa Jan 2001

Penn And West Philadelphia, Dale Mezzacappa

Partnerships/Community

May 13, 1985, was one of the most tragic days in the history of Philadelphia. ln an effort to dislodge the troublesome back-to-nature group MOVE, the police department bombed its row house, inadvertently setting off a fire that engulfed two city blocks, displaced 53 families, and killed 11 people. It's hard to imagine that anything good could come out of an event like this, but it did. The MOVE fire served as the catalyst that propelled the fledgling West Philadelphia Improvement Corps into what is now one of the most far-reaching collaborations between an urban university and the schools in …

Community Service Learning In Culturally Diverse Stettings As A Springboard For Student Constructed Case Studies, Viviana Alexandrowicz

Service Learning, General

This article describes the process of incorporating case study development by students in a teacher education methods course. The students weekly and final reflections, in addition to the high quality of their case studies, suggested that case study development by teacher candidates is an effective approach to increase their understanding of and competence to work with second language and culturally diverse people.

A Constitutional Confluence: American ‘State Action’ Law And The Application Of South Africa’S Socioeconomic Rights Guarantees To Private Actors, Stephen Ellmann Jan 2001

A Constitutional Confluence: American ‘State Action’ Law And The Application Of South Africa’S Socioeconomic Rights Guarantees To Private Actors, Stephen Ellmann

Articles & Chapters

As constitutional protection of human rights expands around the world, the question of whether constitutional rights should protect people not only against state action but also against the conduct of private actors is once again timely. Few nations have so broadly, or so ambiguously, endorsed the application of constitutional guarantees to constrain private conduct (known outside the United States as "horizontality") as South Africa. The constitution approved in 1996 applies fully and without qualification to all "organs of state," and this term is defined in section 239 in potentially very broad terms, notably embracing "any other functionary or institution ... …

Will The Wolf Survive?: Latino/A Pop Music In The Cultural Mainstream, Steven W. Bender Jan 2001

Will The Wolf Survive?: Latino/A Pop Music In The Cultural Mainstream, Steven W. Bender

Faculty Articles

For years, White artists have dominated American pop music. With the notable exception of Black vocalists, non-White artists have rarely experienced sustained and substantial success in this market. Although Latino/a artists have made modest inroads into the pop music mainstream in the past, the current success of Latino/a singers is unprecedented for its sales figures, its domination of pop radio, the diversity of backgrounds of the Latino/a artists riding the same wave, and the degree of American media attention focused on this "phenomenon." In addition to the financial rewards enjoyed by artists (and their record companies) who succeed in the …

Privacy And Power: Computer Databases And Metaphors For Information Privacy, Daniel J. Solove Jan 2001

Privacy And Power: Computer Databases And Metaphors For Information Privacy, Daniel J. Solove

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Journalists, politicians, jurists, and legal academics often describe the privacy problem created by the collection and use of personal information through computer databases and the Internet with the metaphor of Big Brother - the totalitarian government portrayed in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. Professor Solove argues that this is the wrong metaphor. The Big Brother metaphor as well as much of the law that protects privacy emerges from a longstanding paradigm for conceptualizing privacy problems. Under this paradigm, privacy is invaded by uncovering one's hidden world, by surveillance, and by the disclosure of concealed information. The harm caused by such invasions …

The Banquet Type-Scene In The Parables Of Jesus, Fazadudin Hosein Jan 2001

The Banquet Type-Scene In The Parables Of Jesus, Fazadudin Hosein

Dissertations

Biblical narratives abound in ancient literary and oral conventions. One such convention is the type-scene. The study of the type-scene originated in 1933 with Walter Arend who studied compositional recurrent patterns and variations in the epics of Homer. Later, the study was developed by Robert Alter inhis treatment of biblical narratives. The type-scene was a narratorial device used by ancient orators and writers in which traditional elements of repetitive compositional patterns were told and retold ininnovative ways to an audience, raising their expectation and sometimes causing surprise. Conventional elements that make up the type-scene were catchwords, motifs, characters, and themes. …

Reflexive Moments: Negotiating Researcher Roles In Participant Observation, Trudy Milburn, Richard J. Wilkins, Karen W. Wilkins Jan 2001

Reflexive Moments: Negotiating Researcher Roles In Participant Observation, Trudy Milburn, Richard J. Wilkins, Karen W. Wilkins

Iowa Journal of Communication

This essay addresses how, throughout ethnographies of communication, researchers (re)negotiate their roles and voices with the speech communities they study. The authors demonstrate how a (re)negotiation process occurs throughout moments of pre-fieldwork where a researcher struggles with how to make sense of his or her role in relation to those studied, fieldwork where a member manages to tack back and forth between the role of member and the role of researcher, and late stages of fieldwork where role (re)definition comes after spending many months in the field. The moments of data collection occurred in three scenes that are a Finnish …

The Caregiver Quality Of Life Cystic Fibrosis (Cqolcf) Scale: Development And Validation, Whitney Boling Jan 2001

The Caregiver Quality Of Life Cystic Fibrosis (Cqolcf) Scale: Development And Validation, Whitney Boling

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to modify the Caregiver Quality of Life Index-Cancer Scale, develop it as the Caregiver Quality of Life Cystic Fibrosis (CQOLCF) Scale, and validate it in the CF family caregiver population. Another purpose of this study was to create a disease-specific instrument that assessed the CF family caregivers perception of their quality of life. Three research questions guided this investigation into assessing the quality of life of CF family caregivers: (a) Is the CQOLCF a reliable instrument for assessing quality of life in CF family caregivers? (b) Is the CQOLCF a valid instrument for assessing …

Interpretation Of The Definition Of 'Refugee' Under Art. 1(A)(2) Of The Convention Relating To The Status Of Refugees, With A View To The Elaboration Of A Community Instrument To Guide The Application Of The Refugee Convention Pursuant To Art.63(1)(C) Of The Treaty Of The European Communities, James C. Hathaway

Other Publications

In approaching the task of recommending how to structure a Directive on common minimum standards for the recognition ofrefugee status in the Member States of the European Union, I have struggled to avoid two extremes. On the one hand, my recommendations might simply have reflected a search for the common denominator of relevant practice. The risk of this sort of analysis is, of course, that it clearly promotes a "race to the bottom," in which those States which presently fully implement their international obligations are encouraged to reduce the standard of protection. The alternative extreme would have been to define …
