Levels Of Acculturation Of Children Of Mexican Descent As Perceived In Their Kinetic Family Drawings, Kevin Adolfo Rosado
Levels Of Acculturation Of Children Of Mexican Descent As Perceived In Their Kinetic Family Drawings, Kevin Adolfo Rosado
Dissertations
Problem. Information on Hispanic children and their families is limited. More research activity is crucial in the light of the rapidly expanding population of Latino/Hispanics. Mexican families present a particular challenge to clinicians and to treatment settings, as well as to researchers. The impact of acculturation on psychological assessment instruments is largely unknown. This study sought to use the Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) as a tool to gain information about how differences in acculturation are reflected through drawings done by children of Mexican descent.
Method. Private and public schools with representation of Mexican-American and Caucasian children from rural, semi-rural, small …
Intergenerational Transmission Of Values Through Adages In An Ecuadorian Family, Norma Albán-Lowry
Intergenerational Transmission Of Values Through Adages In An Ecuadorian Family, Norma Albán-Lowry
Dissertations
Problem. This study explored the function of adages in intergenerational value transmission in an Ecuadorian family. Drawing on the richness of Hispanic culture, the study documents a method used by parents and grandparents to pass on their wisdom to younger generations.
The transmission of values to younger generations has always been of special interest to parents, teachers, and religious educators. While the role of the family in the transmission of values has been researched, the use of adages, long practiced as a traditional parenting method in Ecuadorian families, had not been studied.
Method. The ethnographic method, as proposed …
Three Nearly Sacred Books In Western Law, George P. Fletcher
Three Nearly Sacred Books In Western Law, George P. Fletcher
Faculty Scholarship
We American lawyers pride ourselves on the secular nature of our legal system. We celebrate the separation of Church and State. We think that the moving spirit of the law is to be found not in eternal truths about the universe but in the contingent needs of social and economic policy. "The life of the law has not been logic: it has been experience," said Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., in a sentence that since 1881 has broadcast to every new generation of lawyers the pragmatic foundations of their craft.
We assume that we have little in common with the great …
Bullying In A Primary School : A Case Study, Christopher Graham Lee
Bullying In A Primary School : A Case Study, Christopher Graham Lee
Plymouth Institute of Education Theses
Bullying has become a significant issue for schools and one that has attracted the media spotlight. It has also received considerable attention from the research community since the late 1980s following the tradition established through the work of many Scandinavian researchers. Much of the research has been longitudinal and sought to illuminate the experience of children who bullied or were being bullied. There has been considerably less research into teachers' and parents' understanding and experience of bullying between school children. This thesis seeks to rectify that situation by examining the views of Year 5 and 6 pupils, teachers and a …

Methodological Embodiments:: Psychical Corporeal Performances Of Subjective Specific Auto[Erotic)-Representations, Ryya Aviva Sanders
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
A great deal of critical attention has been paid over the last twenty years at least to the relation of 'self and 'Other'. But what happens when the external 'other' is displaced to the periphery of the concerns of textual production? In order to explore this question Methodological Embodiments employs an interdisciplinary praxis that is not limited to the classic model of written theory. At the same time, it does not negate this form that has historical and ideological precedence within an academic context. The aim of this thesis is to juxtapose written theory with artistic practices in order to …
The Original Meaning Of The Commerce Clause, Randy E. Barnett
The Original Meaning Of The Commerce Clause, Randy E. Barnett
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The U& Supreme Court, in recent cases; has attempted to define limits on the Congress's power to regulate commerce among the several states. While Justice Thomas has maintained that the original meaning of "commerce" was limited to the "trade and exchange" of goods and transportation for this purpose, some have argued that he is mistaken and that "commerce" originally included any "gainful activity." Having examined every appearance of the word "commerce"in the records of the Constitutional Convention, the ratification debates and the Federalist Papers, Professor Barnett finds no surviving example of this term being used in this broader sense. In …

An Analysis Of Nominal Groups In Inspirational Writings : A Systemic-Functional Approach, Wai To Wong
Student Works (2000-2009)
The Nominal Group (NG), which carries lexical content, is part of a clause that contains nouns, determiners, numerals, epithets, classifiers and qualifiers. This paper gives an overview of how NGs function in response to the concepts found in inspirational writings with Christian themes. The NGs are selected from five different sources on such writings. The NGs are quantitatively and qualitatively described and analysed in both their logical and experiential structures. The theoretical foundations of Systemic Functional Grammar are adapted for use, following the framework espoused by M A K Halliday (1994), for the NG analysis. The NGs are first demarcated, …

A Study Of Stipulative Terms In Conversational Malaysian English, Aileen Cheng Cheng Ng
Student Works (2000-2009)
Malaysian English as a new variety of English is constantly changing and evolving due to the influence of culture and ethnicity in Malaysia. Although fast developing and expanding into various domains such as home, office and recreation, it has not gained recognition in the international arena of Linguistics since it is still a relatively new field. Regardless of the researches that have been conducted on Malaysian English, this new variety of English has not exactly been viewed in a positive light. Foreigners and Malaysians alike have regarded Malaysian English as a substandard variety of English, often equating it with broken …

Padanan Terjemahan Kata Nama : Kes Daripada Dua Buah Novel Jepun, Sarinah Sharif
Padanan Terjemahan Kata Nama : Kes Daripada Dua Buah Novel Jepun, Sarinah Sharif
Student Works (2000-2009)
This research focuses on the approaches and strategies to be taken by any translator in the search for the closest natural equivalence for any given noun. However the approaches and strategies are only a suggestion based on the writer's extracted samplings from the two Japanese novels, namely Hatsukoi by Tatsuya Yoshimura and Hyaku lkkai Me no Puropousu by Shinji Yojima. In the writer's opinion, this research on translation equivalence is important as accuracy in any translation will fall greatly on the mastery and intelligence of a translator in finding the closest equivalence. We can no longer think that the translation …

The Spanish Predominant Language Ordinance: Is Spanish On The Way In And English On The Way Out., Adriana Resendez
The Spanish Predominant Language Ordinance: Is Spanish On The Way In And English On The Way Out., Adriana Resendez
St. Mary's Law Journal
El Cenizo's Spanish language ordinance is likely to survive a constitutional challenge. The City Council of El Cenizo’s Spanish language ordinance, however, has generated a significant amount of controversy in the United States. The ordinance stipulates that all city council meetings will be made in the city’s predominant language—Spanish. Critics argue that the ordinance has made Spanish the official language. Critics also argue that the ordinance is discriminatory toward English speakers. English only advocacy groups, such as English First and U.S. English, argue that the ordinance will create a trend across the United States of immigrants refusing to embrace an …

On The Interaction Of Alphabetic And Logographic Words With Sounds And Images, Nader T. Tavassoli, Jin K. Han
On The Interaction Of Alphabetic And Logographic Words With Sounds And Images, Nader T. Tavassoli, Jin K. Han
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
It is well established that reading alphabetic words is dominated by phonological (sound-based) processes, whereas phonological processes do not appear to dominate the processing of Chinese logographs, where visual processes are more pronounced (for reviews, see Tavassoli, in press; Zhou & Marslen-Wilson, 1999). Most previous demonstrations of these linguistic differences have relied on low-level processes that potentially do not involve short-term memory. For example, they have attempted to assess differences in the speed (measured in milliseconds) by which phonological and semantic information get activated in the brain. Our research adds to a growing stream of consumer behavior research that has …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Studies on the effect of temperature on the development, longevity and population growth of Cotesia flavipes Cameron and Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) indicated that the development of both Cotesia spp. from oviposition to cocoon formation and adult emergence was inversely related to temperature. The longevity of the parasitoids was also inversely related to temperature. Both parasitoids lived longer when moisture and food (agar + honey/water) were provided. The mean number of females and total adult progeny produced by C. flavipes on two host species were, in most cases, higher than C. sesamiae. The intrinsic rate of natural increase of C. flavipes …
