Dartmouth Scholarship

OBJECTIVE:

The study compares the effectiveness of two strategies for distributing azithromycin in an area with mild-to-moderate active trachoma in Nepal.

METHODS:

The two strategies investigated were the use of azithromycin for 1) mass treatment of all children, or 2) targeted treatment of only those children who were found to be clinically active, as well as all members of their household.

FINDINGS:

Mass treatment of children was slightly more effective in terms of decreasing the prevalence of clinically active trachoma (estimated by clinical examination) and of chlamydial infection (estimated by DNA amplification tests), although neither result was statistically significant.

CONCLUSION: …

Serogroups And Antimicrobial Susceptibility Of Non-Typhoidal Salmonellas In Children, Fahad A. Al-Zamil, Awad R. Al-Anazi

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To update knowledge regarding the pattern of Serogroups and antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonellas causing gastroenteritis in children at the King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during the period of 1st April 1996 to 30th September 1999. METHODS: The case records of 416 children, from whom Salmonella species were isolated from stool cultures between April 1996 and September 1999 were reviewed. The isolates and susceptibility of these Salmonella were carried out accordingly to standard microbiological methods. RESULTS: During a period of 3 and 1/2 years a total of 412 non-typhoidal Salmonellas were isolated from stool cultures of 416 …

Characterization Of The Laminated Layer Of In Vitro Cultivated Echinococcus Vogeli Metacestodes, Katrin Ingold, Wenjuan Dai, Robert L. Rausch, Bruno Gottstein, Andrew Hemphill

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The metacestode (larval) stages of the cestode parasites Echinococcus vogeli and E. multilocularis were isolated from the peritoneal cavity of experimentally infected C57BL/6 mice and were cultured in vitro for a period of up to four months under conditions normally applied for the in vitro cultivation of E. multilocularis metacestodes. In contrast to E. multilocularis, E. vogeli did not exhibit extensive exogenous budding and proliferation but increased in size with a final diameter of up to 10 mm. Most metacestodes contained protoscoleces, singly or in groups, either associated with brood capsules or growing directly out of the germinal layer. …

Characterization Of Sarr, A Modulator Of Sar Expression In Staphylococcus Aureus, Adhar Manna, Ambrose L. Cheung Feb 2001

Characterization Of Sarr, A Modulator Of Sar Expression In Staphylococcus Aureus, Adhar Manna, Ambrose L. Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

The expression of virulence determinants in Staphylococcus aureus is controlled by global regulatory loci (e.g., sar and agr). The sar locus is composed of three overlapping transcripts (sar P1, P3, and P2 transcripts from P1, P3, and P2 promoters, respectively), all encoding the 372-bp sarA gene. The level of SarA, the major regulatory protein, is partially controlled by the differential activation of sar promoters. We previously partially purified a ∼12 kDa protein with a DNA-specific column

The Genetic Mating System And Population Structure Of The Green -Rumped Parrotlet., Rebecca Renae Melland Jan 2001

The Genetic Mating System And Population Structure Of The Green -Rumped Parrotlet., Rebecca Renae Melland

Theses and Dissertations

The population genetic structure and extra-pair paternity were investigated using microsatellite markers in a Neotropical parrot, the Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus pesserinus). Blood samples were taken from adults at 6 natural populations from the Llanos of Venezuela and 160 families from the Hato Masaguaral population. Adult samples were screened at 10 microsatellite loci. Offspring were screened at 3 loci. Parentage analysis of 827 offspring revealed an extra-pair fertilization (EPF) rate of 7.7% young (n = 64) in 14.4% of nests (n = 23). No offspring resulted from intra-specific parasitism. Identification of genetic paternity was attempted for all extra-pair young. Comparisons of …

Microhabitat Partitioning By Two Chipmunk Species (Tamias) In Western Colorado, J. Jeffrey Root, Charles H. Calisher, Barry J. Beaty Jan 2001

Microhabitat Partitioning By Two Chipmunk Species (Tamias) In Western Colorado, J. Jeffrey Root, Charles H. Calisher, Barry J. Beaty

Western North American Naturalist

We examined microhabitat use of sympatrically occurring Tamias minimus (least chipmunk) and T. rufus (Hopi chipmunk) in a piñon-juniper/sagebrush vegetative community near Molina, western Colorado, from October 1994 to June 1999. This community is dominated by 2 major microhabitat types: shrub (sage; Artemisia spp.) and tree (pine and juniper; Pinus edulis and Juniperus scopulorum). Small mammals were live-trapped, marked, and released throughout this study. When it was the most abundant Tamias species on the study plots (1994–1997), Tamias minimus captures were associated with trees. Tamias rufus also exhibited this association but was captured at very low abundances during this …

Univercity News (2001-01-08)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Free-Ranging Deer In Nebraska, David G. Renter, Jan M. Sargeant, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Jeff D. Hoffmann, Jerry R. Gillespie

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In order to determine the prevalence and distribution of the human pathogen, Escherichia coli O157:H7, in free-ranging deer, hunters were asked to collect and submit fecal samples from deer harvested during a regular firearm season (14–22 November 1998). Prior to the season, 47% of the hunters with permits in the southeastern Nebraska (USA) study area indicated a willingness to participate in the study. Approximately 25% of successful hunters in the area submitted deer fecal samples. Escherichia coli O157:H7 was cultured from four (0.25%) of 1,608 total samples submitted. All of the fecal samples that were properly identified (1,426) and all …
