Comparative In-Vitro Activity Of Trovafloxacin And Other Related Drugs Against Isolates Of Streptococcus Oralis, Akbar M. Rafay Mar 2001

Comparative In-Vitro Activity Of Trovafloxacin And Other Related Drugs Against Isolates Of Streptococcus Oralis, Akbar M. Rafay

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The in-vitro activity of trovafloxacin a new quinolone was compared with that of ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, various b-lactam and other appropriate antibiotics such as vancomycin, teicoplanin and clindamycin against 60 isolates of S. oralis. METHODS: Minimal inhibitory concentration was performed using the agar dilution technique and micro-titer method. In addition minimal bactericidal concentration and time-kill studies were carried out to estimate the bactericidal activity of trovafloxacin against S. oralis isolates. RESULTS: Trovafloxacin showed a four-fold increase in activity over ciprofloxacin, with a narrow minimal inhibitory concentration range, MIC50 and mode values of 0.25 mg/l. Although the minimal inhibitory concentrations of …

Defining Human Services, Chaim Zins Mar 2001

Defining Human Services, Chaim Zins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study aims at formulating adequate criteria for designing the field of human services. Based on a conceptual analysis of "human services" the study establishes the theoretical ground of a four-category model for classifying human service organizations, and three alternative definitions of the field. The classificatory principle underlying the model and the definitions reflects the contribution of human services to overall societal wellbeing. I conclude the study by discussing the implications for social welfare policy planning, service design and evaluation, and shaping the nature of the helping professions.

Plant-Based Multicomponent Vaccines Against Enteric Diseases, Jie Yu Mar 2001

Plant-Based Multicomponent Vaccines Against Enteric Diseases, Jie Yu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To generate a plant-based multicomponent oral vaccine against cholera, rotavirus and enterotoxigenic E.coli (ETEC), we have constructed transgenic potato plants that synthesize the cholera toxin B and A2 subunits, the rotavirus enterotoxin NSP4 22 amino acid epitope and the ETEC fimbrial antigen CFA/L To use cholera toxin as a carrier molecule for delivery of multiple antigens to the gut-associated lymphoid tissues, the rotavirus NSP4 epitope was linked to the cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) and the ETEC fimbrial antigen CFA/I was linked to the cholera toxin A2 subunit. Cholera toxin-antigen fusion proteins were detected in transformed tuber tissues by immunoblot …

Crossing Myriad Borders: A Dimensional Analysis Of The Migration And Health Experiences Of Indigenous Oaxacan Women, Sharon Mcguire Phd, Op, Msn, Rn-C Mar 2001

Crossing Myriad Borders: A Dimensional Analysis Of The Migration And Health Experiences Of Indigenous Oaxacan Women, Sharon Mcguire Phd, Op, Msn, Rn-C

Dissertations

The growing feminization of the migration of ethnic indigenous women, such as Mixtecs, Zapotecs and Triquis from the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, are altering the dynamics and configuration of traditional Mexican migration, making it especially significant for the health professions. Informed by a postcolonial ecofeminist paradigm, this bi-national grounded theory study explored the migration and health experiences of indigenous Oaxacan immigrant/migrant women. Data collection using participant observation and interviewing occurred in Oaxaca, Mexico, along the US-Mexico border, and the interior of California. Dimensional analysis was used as the method of data analysis to generate theoretical understandings of these phenomena. …

Living-Related Liver Transplantation, Atef F. Bassas, Sami H. Wali, Hussa F. Al-Husseini, Mona S. Al-Shahed, Haider A. Al-Shuraffa, Muafak T. Jawdat Mar 2001

Living-Related Liver Transplantation, Atef F. Bassas, Sami H. Wali, Hussa F. Al-Husseini, Mona S. Al-Shahed, Haider A. Al-Shuraffa, Muafak T. Jawdat

Saudi Medical Journal

We report here, the first pediatric living-related liver transplant in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. Our patient is a 2 year old girl with a diagnosis of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis, causing intractable pruritis and failure to thrive requiring liver transplantation. The child was successfully transplanted using a segment of her mother9s liver for living-related liver transplantation. Two years post-transplantation the patient is doing well. With the ongoing crises in cadaveric organ availability and the high prevalence of pediatric liver disease, living related liver transplantation is an ideal solution to this difficult and challenging problem.

Evolution In The Information Age: Rediscovering The Nature Of The Organism, Daniel R. Brooks Mar 2001

Evolution In The Information Age: Rediscovering The Nature Of The Organism, Daniel R. Brooks

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The newest synthesis of evolutionary thought is emerging, and promises to return evolutionary biology to Darwin’s panoramic view of life. The key element is a long-standing dualism in evolutionary theory. This dualism has a long history within evolutionary biology, being manifested under guises such as: (1) the nature of the organism and the nature of the conditions, (2) internal and external, or intrinsic and extrinsic, factors, (3) production and exchanges, (4) boundary and initial conditions, (5) metabolism and replication, (6) energy and information, and (7) costs and benefits, and conflict and resolution. A partially retrospective review suggests that there is …

The Role Of Law In Russian Health Reform: Report To The United States Agency For International Development, Wendy K. Mariner, Frank G. Feeley Mar 2001

The Role Of Law In Russian Health Reform: Report To The United States Agency For International Development, Wendy K. Mariner, Frank G. Feeley

Faculty Scholarship

True reform necessarily entails new law. In the newly independent Russian Federation, law has played a formative role in efforts to reform the health care system. Both historically and structurally, the health care system in Russia is more dependent on legal authorization than that in most Western industrialized countries. Reforms that providers might institute independently elsewhere are not likely to happen in Russia without specific laws authorizing them. Policy makers often formulate the substance of policy in the context of developing legislation, instead of drafting legislation to codify settled policy decisions. Thus, identifying and developing suitable laws has become an …
