Nazi Medical Experimentation: Should The Data Obtained Be Used?, Elizabeth S. Dyal

Honors Theses

Many researchers question whether or not the data obtained from Nazi medical experiments should be used. This paper examines which experiments were conducted, the data that was found, and the ethical questions related to using this data. Beyond the ethical questions, this paper also determines if the data can be used due to the way the experiments were conducted.

The Toxoplasma Gondii Protein Rop2 Mediates Host Organelle Association With The Parasitophorous Vacuole Membrane, Anthony P. Sinai, Keith A. Joiner Jul 2001

The Toxoplasma Gondii Protein Rop2 Mediates Host Organelle Association With The Parasitophorous Vacuole Membrane, Anthony P. Sinai, Keith A. Joiner

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Toxoplasma gondii replicates within a specialized vacuole surrounded by the parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM). The PVM forms intimate interactions with host mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in a process termed PVM–organelle association. In this study we identify a likely mediator of this process, the parasite protein ROP2. ROP2, which is localized to the PVM, is secreted from anterior organelles termed rhoptries during parasite invasion into host cells. The NH2-terminal domain of ROP2 (ROP2hc) within the PVM is exposed to the host cell cytosol, and has characteristics of a mitochondrial targeting signal. In in vitro assays, ROP2hc is …

Mononuclear Phagocyte Differentiation, Activation, And Viral Infection Regulate Matrix Metalloproteinase Expression: Implications For Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1-Associated Dementia, Anuja Ghorpade, Raisa Persidskaia, Radhika Suryadevara, Myhanh Che, Xiao Juan Liu, Yuri Persidsky, Howard Gendelman

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The pathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-associated dementia (HAD) is mediated mainly by mononuclear phagocyte (MP) secretory products and their interactions with neural cells. Viral infection and MP immune activation may affect leukocyte entry into the brain. One factor that influences central nervous system (CNS) monocyte migration is matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In the CNS, MMPs are synthesized by resident glial cells and affect the integrity of the neuropil extracellular matrix (ECM). To ascertain how MMPs influence HAD pathogenesis, we studied their secretion following MP differentiation, viral infection, and cellular activation. HIV-1-infected and/or immune-activated monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) and human …

Echazabal V. Chevron: A Direct Threat To Employers In The Ninth Circuit, Deborah Leigh Bender Jul 2001

Echazabal V. Chevron: A Direct Threat To Employers In The Ninth Circuit, Deborah Leigh Bender

Washington Law Review

Although Congress enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in part to protect disabled individuals from paternalism, the ADA permits employers to adopt a requirement that individuals not pose a direct threat to others in the workplace. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has determined that this direct threat defense also protects an employer who discharges or refuses to hire individuals who pose a direct threat to their own health or safety in the workplace. In Echazabal v. Chevron, the Ninth Circuit struck down the EEOC interpretation of direct threat on the ground that it was paternalistic and inconsistent …

Temperature Effects On The Dynamics Of Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae) Populations In The Laboratory, Barry W. Alto, Steven A. Juliano Jul 2001

Temperature Effects On The Dynamics Of Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae) Populations In The Laboratory, Barry W. Alto, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

We investigated how constant temperatures of 22, 24, and 26 degreesC experienced across the full life cycle affected the dynamics of caged populations of Aedes albopictus (Skuse). All cages were equipped with plastic beakers that served as sites for oviposition and larval development. We measured the per capita daily mortality and emergence rates of the adults and size of adult females, and estimated the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and asymptotic density (K) for each adult population. populations at 26 degreesC had greater intrinsic rates of increase and lower asymptotic densities than populations at 22 and 24 degreesC. Populations at …

Tetanus. A Clinical Review, Juma M. Al-Kaabi, Euan M. Scrimgeour, Andre Louon, Bazdawi M. Al-Riyami

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Although tetanus is now uncommon in Oman (The Expanded Program on Immunization was introduced in 1981), patients continue to present from time to time at an average rate of 6 cases per year. Worldwide, the mortality rate for tetanus remains high (ranging from 15-20% in developed countries). At the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, prolonged Intensive Care Unit treatment and multi-disciplinary management is invariably required for tetanus patients. This study was carried out to evaluate our results over the past decade. METHODS: All tetanus patients admitted to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital from 1991 up to the end …

Necrotizing Fasciitis, Catherine L. Cherneski, John M. Embil Jul 2001

Necrotizing Fasciitis, Catherine L. Cherneski, John M. Embil

Saudi Medical Journal

Necrotizing fasciitis is a devestating condition which has been recognized for several years. In North America a recent increase of cases has led to much media attention and public fear. Necrotizing fasciitis may occur as a consequence of infection with Streptococcus pyogenes or as a result of a polymicrobial synergistic infection caused by aerobic, anaerobic, gram positive and gram negative organisms, often in postoperative patients. Necrotizing fasciitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes is mediated by superantigens. The management of necrotizing fasciitis requires a high index of suspicion for diagnosis followed by antimicrobial therapy and early surgical intervention. In cases caused by …

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing And Patterns Of Resistance At A Tertiary Care Center, Javed Akhter, Mohammed O. Qutub, Syed M. Qadri

Saudi Medical Journal

Clinical microbiology laboratories are faced with the challenge of accurately detecting emerging antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens. In recent years, vancomycin resistant enterococci have emerged, as have penicillin resistant pneumococci and more recently, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin. In order to detect these emerging resistant pathogens it is essential that antimicrobial susceptibility be carried out by laboratories as an integral part of therapeutic strategies. In this review, we discuss patterns of susceptibility of different antimicrobials as experienced at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, a tertiary care center in Riyadh.
