Vcu News (2001-09-26)
VCU News, 2001-2002
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Method For Treating Ischemia, Peter R. Oeltgen, Mark S. Kindy, Paul D. Bishop
Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Patents
A method for treating ischemia by administering deltorphins to a mammal. Deltorphin I SEQ ID NO:1, delntorphin II SEQ ID NO:2 or combinations of deltorphins I SEQ ID NO:1 and II SEQ ID NO:2 may be administered. A deltorphin concentration of about 0.5-20 mg/kg body weight, or alternatively a lower concentration of about 1-1000 μg/kg body weight of the mammal in a physiologically acceptable formulation is administered up to four hours after an ischemic episode. Deltorphins may also be administered prior to or concurrently with onset of ischemia. Cerebral or spinal cord ischemia or ischemic heart disease may be treated …

Searching Web Based Medical Information, Ibrahim Mansoor
Searching Web Based Medical Information, Ibrahim Mansoor
Saudi Medical Journal
Searching for references is part of everyday life in medicine. Since the arrival of the Internet, it has provided great promise for clinicians because of it9s ability to access and consolidate large amounts of knowledge and information quickly and easily. But because of the overload of the huge amounts of information, searching for particular information has now become a tedious task, which is a lso very time-consuming and frustrating. This article describes effective ways, tips, tools, detailed search techniques and strategies for searching medical information. It also lists some useful resource and database sites that can provide a lot of …
Mission Possible? Maintaining The Safety Net In Urban And Rural Colorado, Karen Matherlee
Mission Possible? Maintaining The Safety Net In Urban And Rural Colorado, Karen Matherlee
National Health Policy Forum
This site visit examined urban safety-net concerns in Denver and rural safety-net issues in three communities in the eastern part of Colorado. The Denver segment featured Denver Health, an integrated health system that provides a continuum of services to diverse vulnerable populations. It explored delivery and financing issues for the system itself and in relation to payers, providers, and consumers (particularly through Community Voices) in its catchment area. The eastern Colorado segment focused on delivery and financing issues in Rocky Ford (community health center/migrant health services concerns), Limon (certified rural health center topics), and Hugo (critical-access hospital matters). The visit …

Faculty Publications
Previous studies from our laboratory indicated that a 28-amino-acid carboxyl-terminal truncation of gB caused extensive virus-induced cell fusion (Baghian et al., 1993, J Virol 67, 2396-2401). We tested the ability of additional truncations and mutations within gB to cause cell fusion in the recently established virus-free cell fusion assay (Turner et al., 1998, J. Virol. 72, 873-875). Deletion of the carboxyl-terminal 28 amino acids of gB (gBΔ28), which removed part of the predicted α-helical structure H17b, caused extensive cell fusion. A gB truncation specified by gBΔ36, which removed the entire H17b domain, caused as much cell fusion as the gBΔ28 …

A Dissertation On African American Male Youth Violence: "Trying To Kill The Part Of You That Isn’T Loved", Joy Degruy Leary
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is based on Sociocultural Theory, Social Learning Theory and Trauma Theory, as well as a new theoretical framework (Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) which takes into account multigenerational trauma. Five research questions involving independent variables believed to predict violent behavior in African American male youth were investigated. The first three questions addressed stressors experienced by African Americans: violence witnessing, violence victimization, and daily urban hassles. The fourth and fifth questions concerned the sociocultural characteristics of racial socialization and prosocial attitudes toward respect. Participants were 200 African American male youth residing in inner Northeast Portland, Oregon who were recruited from …

Transduction By Phi Bb-1, A Bacteriophage Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Christian H. Eggers, Betsy J. Kimmel, James L. Bono, Abdallah F. Elias, Patricia Rosa, D. Scott Samuels
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We previously described a bacteriophage of the Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi designated phi BB-1. This phage packages the host complement of the 32-kb circular plasmids (cp32s), a group of homologous molecules found throughout the genus Borrelia. To demonstrate the ability of phi BB-1 to package and transduce DNA, a kanamycin resistance cassette was inserted into a cloned fragment of phage DNA, and the resulting construct was transformed into B. burgdorferi CA-11.2A cells. The kan cassette recombined into a resident cp32 and was stably maintained. The cp32 containing the kan cassette was packaged by phi BB-1 released from this B. …
