The Genetic Mating System And Population Structure Of The Green -Rumped Parrotlet., Rebecca Renae Melland Jan 2001

The Genetic Mating System And Population Structure Of The Green -Rumped Parrotlet., Rebecca Renae Melland

Theses and Dissertations

The population genetic structure and extra-pair paternity were investigated using microsatellite markers in a Neotropical parrot, the Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus pesserinus). Blood samples were taken from adults at 6 natural populations from the Llanos of Venezuela and 160 families from the Hato Masaguaral population. Adult samples were screened at 10 microsatellite loci. Offspring were screened at 3 loci. Parentage analysis of 827 offspring revealed an extra-pair fertilization (EPF) rate of 7.7% young (n = 64) in 14.4% of nests (n = 23). No offspring resulted from intra-specific parasitism. Identification of genetic paternity was attempted for all extra-pair young. Comparisons of …

Testing Models Of The Incarnation: From Revelation To Historical Science, Alan G. Padgett Jan 2001

Testing Models Of The Incarnation: From Revelation To Historical Science, Alan G. Padgett

Journal for Christian Theological Research

Is it proper for the results of science to influence Christian theology? If so, on what grounds? I argue that science can and should influence theology, and give the example of historical investigation into Jesus (historical science) and Christology (theology). Proof, coherence and informal support are the three logical ways of relating data to theories. Abandoning proof, and assuming coherence, we look at the notions of abduction and retroduction (informal support á la C. S. Peirce) as models for the history-theology relationship. Among the theologians, I explicitly follow Basil Mitchell and Reinhold Niebuhr on the relationship between faith and history, …

Spanish Women And The SeccióN Femenina: Rhetoric, Imagery, And Ideology, Julia Hudson-Richards Jan 2001

Spanish Women And The SeccióN Femenina: Rhetoric, Imagery, And Ideology, Julia Hudson-Richards

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Women never discover anything; they lack, of course, the creative talent; reserved by God for male intelligence. We can do nothing more but perform for better or worse, the tasks which men give us.

Pilar Primo de Rivera, 1942.

Though at the time of its founding in 1934 the women’s section of the Spanish fascist party may have been insignificant to many, the Sección Femenina in a few short years was installed as the premier government agency with regard to the political status of Spain’s women. With the consolidation of the Franco regime, the Sección Femenina was placed in charge …

Sokal’S Hermeneutic Hoax: Physics And The New Inquisition, Babette Babich Jan 2001

Sokal’S Hermeneutic Hoax: Physics And The New Inquisition, Babette Babich

Research Resources

“The Hermeneutics of a Hoax: Physics and the New Inquisition” offers a rhetorical analysis and hermeneutics reading of the parodic character of Sokal's "hoax." From the perspective of a philosopher of science, it is argued that it is important to attend both to the rhetorical level of philosophy and science. In addition it is important to consider the culture of status (Bourdieu) as well as the self-reflective weaknesses of the culture of physics including those of (traditionally) physics-dominated philosophy of science. Echoing some of the criticisms and highlighting the points of social advocacy of the late Paul Feyerabend underscores the …

Small-Time Accounting: A 19th Century Meat Merchant In Maine, Gloria Vollmers, Darlene Bay

Accounting Historians Journal

The journal of Amos K. Hersey, a 19th century meat merchant from Pembroke, Maine is examined in this paper. The accounting system used by Hersey is analyzed and compared with contemporary prescriptions for account keeping. The paper seeks to contribute to the emerging literature on the history of accounting among ordinary people. It shows how the accounts kept by Hersey reflect and illuminate several features of a local economy and society.

Franz Leopold Ranke, The Ranke Library At Syracuse And The Open Future Of Scientific History, Siegfried Baur

The Courier

"The recent purchase of the great historical library of Dr. Leopold von Ranke by an American suggests some reflections. There is no doubt that this library, which numbers many thousands of books, pamphlets, manuscripts and documents of all times and all languages, is the finest historical collection in the world.... But this great and invaluable collection, which should have gone to one of the large cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia or Chicago, or to one of the university towns like Cambridge, New Haven, Ithaca or Ann Arbor, is going to Syracuse, which is neither a large city nor a …

Robertson Lafayette Whiteside: Systematic Theologian For The Churches Of Christ, Robert Peter Valentine Jr. Jan 2001

Robertson Lafayette Whiteside: Systematic Theologian For The Churches Of Christ, Robert Peter Valentine Jr.

Stone-Campbell Books

This paper explores the life and thought of Robertson L. Whiteside. Whiteside has been largely overlooked in the historiography of the twentieth century Churches of Christ. This paper seeks to remedy that neglect by providing an in depth overview of the life of Whiteside and an exploration of key themes in his theology. In the course of telling his story an attempt is made to show that Whiteside was far more than a man in the shadows. Rather, R. L. Whiteside was, in his own right, a major shaper of theology among American Churches of Christ. Following the survey of …

Internal Audit At The Historical Hudson's Bay Company: A Challenge To Accepted History, Gary P. Spraakman Jan 2001

Internal Audit At The Historical Hudson's Bay Company: A Challenge To Accepted History, Gary P. Spraakman

Accounting Historians Journal

The accepted history of managerial internal audit is that its origins are in financial and compliance auditing. Managerial was added after firms started to expand geographically or into other businesses. That expansion increased complexity and created problems for managers which the internal auditor assisted in solving with managerial audits. Contrary to that two stage development, something comparable to managerial internal audit was being practiced by the Hudson's Bay Company in the form of inspections as early as 1871. Rather than in financial and compliance auditing, these inspections had their geneses in the desire of the senior manager and the committee …

In Defense Of Realism: It Really Is Commonsense, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving Jan 2001

In Defense Of Realism: It Really Is Commonsense, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

“What is truth?” Pilot asked Jesus of Nazareth. For many in academe today this question seems quaintly passé. Rejection of “truth” goes hand-in-hand with the rejection of epistemological realism. Educational thought over the last decade has instead been dominated by anti-realist, instrumentalist ideas of two types: first by psychological constructivism and later by social constructivism. Social constructivism subsequently has been pressed to its logical conclusion in the form of relativistic multiculturalism. Proponents of both psychological constructivism and social constructivism value knowledge for its utility and eschew as irrelevant speculation any notion that knowledge is actually about reality. The arguments are …

The Significance Of Skin Color Among African Americans And Mexican Americans, Margaret L. Hunter, Walter Allen, Edward Telles Jan 2001

The Significance Of Skin Color Among African Americans And Mexican Americans, Margaret L. Hunter, Walter Allen, Edward Telles

Sociology

As W.E.B. Du Bois predicted in his July, 1900 speech before the Pan-African Conference in London, race continues to challenge our society. Du Bois asserted that:

The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the colour line, the question as to how far differences of race, which show themselves chiefly in the colour of the skin and the texture of the hair, are going to be made hereafter, the basis for denying to over half the world the right of sharing to their utmost ability the opportunities and privileges of modern civilisation (Lewis 1995:639).

What Du Bois did …

Futurist Fiction And Fantasy: The Racial Establishment, Gregory E. Rutledge Jan 2001

Futurist Fiction And Fantasy: The Racial Establishment, Gregory E. Rutledge

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Futurist fiction and fantasy encompasses a variety of subgenres: hard science fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, sword-and-sorcerer fantasy, and cyberpunk. Unfortunately, even though nearly a century has expired since the advent of futurist fiction and fantasy, Richard Pryor’s observation and a call for action is still viable. Despite the growing number of Black futurist fiction and fantasy writers, the proportion of Black futurist fiction and fantasy authors to White futurist fiction and fantasy authors is dismal. This disproportion means that Black futurist fiction and fantasy authors have a limited presence in the industry. Thus, although Black futurist fiction and fantasy authors …

Public Sphere: The Past And The Present, Ruoyun Bai Jan 2001

Public Sphere: The Past And The Present, Ruoyun Bai

Iowa Journal of Communication

Originated in 17th and 18th century Europe, the concept of "public sphere" is currently in wide use throughout scholarship concerned with a variety of topics related to democratic practices in contemporary societies. The context in which contemporary public sphere is discussed is completely different from that two hundred years ago, we are bound to lose a lot if we do not re-conceptualize the "public sphere." The term "public sphere" can be highly relevant and useful today if we redefine this term and keep the definition open-ended. The purpose of this essay is to flush out this argument.

Opposing Systems, Erin Stone Jan 2001

Opposing Systems, Erin Stone

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Costa Rica and Nicaragua, although situated close together in geography, historically and politically are worlds apart. Costa Rica has maintained a stable democracy since 1948, while Nicaragua, rocked by authoritarian rule and then revolution in 1979, is still in an unstable growth period. Each country represents an opposing government system that would have varying effects on the emphasis and influence placed on different social situations in each country. Through studying one social aspect, the women's movement, one is able to examine the positive and negative aspects of each system and prospects for future success of countries under each type of …
