The Power Of The Jewel: Discovering Historical Meaning Through The Study Of Jewelry Made In Britain During The Reign Of Queen Victoria, 1837-1901, Mary Gilbert Palmer May 2001

The Power Of The Jewel: Discovering Historical Meaning Through The Study Of Jewelry Made In Britain During The Reign Of Queen Victoria, 1837-1901, Mary Gilbert Palmer

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The thesis: British Victorian jewelry has the power to function as both subject matter and a point of departure for the lively, interdisciplinary study of nineteenth-century Britain.

The study begins with an object, a jewel in the hand, understood as an artifact. The beauty, wearability, intrigue, and history of antique jewelry gives it the power to launch historical inquiry and to provide concrete access to the past. Visual, oral, and print resources, along with other period objects from the arts and social sciences are then used to help reveal, enrich, and expand the historical meanings embedded in the jewels.

The First Phase Of Destruction Killing The Southern Plains Buffalo, 1790-1840, Pekka Hamalainen Apr 2001

The First Phase Of Destruction Killing The Southern Plains Buffalo, 1790-1840, Pekka Hamalainen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The eradication of the vast bison herds from the North American Great Plains is one of the oldest topics in western history and, recently, also one of the most popular. Drawing ideas and methodologies from ecology and zoology, historians have revealed in the 1990s an entirely new anatomy of the destruction. According to the new interpretation, the great slaughter of the 1870s merely delivered a clinching blow to herds that had already been weakened in a number of ways. Concentrating on the Southern Plains, Dan Flores has concluded that large-scale dying may have begun as early as 1840, when a …

Latinos Along The Platte: The Hispanic Experience In Central Nebraska, Roger Davis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This essay examines the arrival and growth of Latino population, principally Mexican American, into the Platte River valley region of Nebraska from 1890 to 1996. It outlines the history of the push and pull factors of immigration from Mexico and the various phases and characteristics of Latino settlement in the Midwest generally and in Nebraska specifically. It reviews demographic patterns over the 20th century and concludes with observations based upon census projections that indicate that the Nebraska Latino community will become the state's primary minority community by 2025.

Expectations Of Iconographic Symbols In Third Century Christianity, David Corbet Apr 2001

Expectations Of Iconographic Symbols In Third Century Christianity, David Corbet

Doctor of Ministry

Art is the avenue down which one moves to encounter the divine. It is the expression of a person's or groups spiritual experience. Through art the divine and the human meet. Within the framework of art, there are different means of expression. A symbol serves as a pointer, directing the audience towards the divine. Figurative expression depicts scenes from religious history, which carries meaning to the audience about their tradition and their history. Narrative expressions tell a story with significance to the religious community. Every religion has some type of artistic expression. This is how a religion demonstrates its own …

Women And Their Mothers: Rejecting And Reclaiming The Tradition Of The Saints, Marie Anne Mayeski

Theological Studies Faculty Works

Without doubt, many women have experienced great difficulty when attempting to reclaim the stories of their spiritual mothers, the saints. However, Mayeski believes that the reclaiming of the stories of female ancestors is both possible and necessary, and she finds in the work of recent feminist scholars suggestions and methods that can prove helpful in the spiritual journey.

The Anaconda's Head: The U.S. Consular Service In British North America, 1861-1866, Myron Becker

History Theses & Dissertations

Although the story of how Confederates attempted to spur rebellion in the North during the Civil War has been the subject of historical research, virtually nothing has been published about the work of Northern operatives in Canada during the period 1861-1866. Extensive research in the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the Royal Canadian Archives and Library demonstrates that a team of U.S. Consuls and detectives led by David 8. Thurston thwarted Confederate efforts to launch those insurrections. The Southern strategy was to create so much havoc that the Union would negotiate a peace that would preserve the Confederacy. …
