Do We Have A Right To Common Goods?, Andrei Marmor
Do We Have A Right To Common Goods?, Andrei Marmor
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Individuals have rights. I will assume that this means that individuals have interests which are important enough to justify the imposition of duties on others in order to secure those interests. Groups of individuals, such as nations or ethnic minorities, plausibly have rights as well. Groups of individuals may have group interests appropriately protected by the imposition of duties on others, typically, on governments, or on other larger political entities. My concern in this essay is with the question of what individuals or groups may have a right to. In particular I want to explore the question of whether people …
Minimum Mean Square Error Spectral Peak Envelope Estimation For Automatic Vowel Classification, Jaishree Venugopal
Minimum Mean Square Error Spectral Peak Envelope Estimation For Automatic Vowel Classification, Jaishree Venugopal
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Spectral feature computations continue to be a very difficult problem for accurate machine recognition of speech. In this work, which focuses on vowels, a new spectral peak envelope method for vowel classification is developed, based on a missing frequency components model of speech recognition. According to the missing frequency components model, vowel recognition depends only on the spectral (harmonic) peaks. Smoothing and interpolation of the spectra, performed in the standard cepstral analysis method commonly used in automatic speech recognition, actually loses valuable information and results in reduced recognition accuracy. The new method for feature extraction presented in this thesis is …
Estrogen Regulation Of The Pregnant Baboon Placental 11Β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase (11Β-Hsd)-Catalyzed Metabolism Of Cortisol And Cortisone And Its Effect On The Development Of The Fetal Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis, William Adair Davies
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Pepe and Albrecht previously demonstrated that the estrogen-regulated change in transuteroplacental metabolism of cortisol (F) and cortisone (E) from preferential reduction (E to F) at midgestation to oxidation (F to E) near term results in a decline of bioactive cortisol crossing the placenta and reaching the fetus culminating in activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis of the baboon and the ontogenesis of rate-limiting steroidogenic enzymes culminating in de novo F secretion. Protein kinase A (PK-A) activity in the baboon fetal adrenal gland cytosolic fraction was increased 2-fold both at term [day 165 of gestation (term = 184 days)] and following …
The Effect Of Occupant And Vehicular Parameters On The Onset And Severity Of Whiplash Associated Disorder, James Keith Wilkerson
The Effect Of Occupant And Vehicular Parameters On The Onset And Severity Of Whiplash Associated Disorder, James Keith Wilkerson
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) cases millions of injuries and billions of dollars in litigation and medical cost. The purpose of this study was to determine if any relationship existed between certain occupant and vehicular constants and the onset and severity of WAD. One hundred subjects involved in low-speed collisions were selected from an active database. Fifty-nine subjects were females and 70% of the subjects were drivers. A discriminant function analysis was performed, with occupant position and duration as the only variables that had significant discriminating power. However, eighty-four percent of the subjects experienced 100millisecond accelerations and 70% were drivers. Therefore, …
Parenting Behaviors Related To Young Adult Depressive Symptomology, Rebecca D. Abramson
Parenting Behaviors Related To Young Adult Depressive Symptomology, Rebecca D. Abramson
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Parental stress, hostility, warmth, acceptance, amount of control, and overall security of parent-child attachment appears to influence childhood and adult adjustment. Several relationships have been found between parenting style and the emotional and psychological well being of children and adolescents (e.g., Baumrind, 1967, 1971; Parker, 1979a, 1979b; Ge, Conger, Lorenz, & Simons, 1994; Ge, Best, Conger, & Simons, 1996). The present study examined the effects of perceived parenting styles on young adults' reported psychological distress and depressive symptomology. Participants viewed both mothers and fathers as equally attentive, supportive, and controlling, while viewing mothers as slightly more caring. However, participants' perceptions …
Prosecuting Conduit Campaign Contributions - Hard Time For Soft Money, Robert D. Probasco
Prosecuting Conduit Campaign Contributions - Hard Time For Soft Money, Robert D. Probasco
Faculty Scholarship
In recent years, there have been several high-profile prosecutions for violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act, involving contributions nominally by one individual but funded or reimbursed by another individual deemed to be the true contributor. Prosecutions of these “conduit contribution” cases have been surprising in at least three significant respects. First, the prosecutions have been based on violations of FECA’s reporting requirements and may not have involved any violations of the substantive prohibitions or limitations of contributions. Second, the defendants were the donors rather than campaign officials who actually filed reports with FECA. Third, the cases were prosecuted as …

A Report On An Arts Administration Internship With Fanfare, Donald K. Marshall
Arts Administration Master's Reports (1984-2016)
In the winter of 1999, Artistic Director Harriet Vogt decided to retire earlier than had been anticipated by the university. With her retirement just weeks away on March 1, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. John Miller, asked if I was interested in taking a leave of absence from the Department of Visual Arts and becoming Interim Artistic Director of Fanfare. At the same time I was beginning to look for a possible internship that would take advantage of my professional experience in the arts and the knowledge that I had gained in graduate school at …

Psychiatry Faculty Publications
This study was an investigation of the association of attitudes toward guns with self-reports of alcohol/drug use, and impulsivity. Participants included 160 male and female high school students, who completed five questions regarding attitudes toward guns, in addition to questions about alcohol/drug use. Data were analyzed using t-tests. Males were more likely to feel that a home was safer with a gun. Feeling positively about a gun was associated with alcohol use in males and impulsive, aggressive behavior in males and females. A greater understanding of attitudes toward guns must take into account gender, alcohol use, and impulsive and aggressive …

Army Transformation: A View From The U.S. Army War College, Williamson Murray Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The U.S. Army is now in the process of transforming itself to meet security interests and the need for land power that span the globe, now and in the future. The following essays are representative of current thinking at the U.S. Army War College by students considering the nature and direction of this transformation. Dr. Williamson Murray s introduction sets the historical context for military transformation, comparing the modern European example with recent U.S. efforts in military innovation. The remaining essays address four themes: the nature of the transformed Army, building irreversible momentum for transformation, improving strategic responsiveness, and how …
Necrotizing Fasciitis, Catherine L. Cherneski, John M. Embil
Necrotizing Fasciitis, Catherine L. Cherneski, John M. Embil
Saudi Medical Journal
Necrotizing fasciitis is a devestating condition which has been recognized for several years. In North America a recent increase of cases has led to much media attention and public fear. Necrotizing fasciitis may occur as a consequence of infection with Streptococcus pyogenes or as a result of a polymicrobial synergistic infection caused by aerobic, anaerobic, gram positive and gram negative organisms, often in postoperative patients. Necrotizing fasciitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes is mediated by superantigens. The management of necrotizing fasciitis requires a high index of suspicion for diagnosis followed by antimicrobial therapy and early surgical intervention. In cases caused by …

OBJECTIVE: From different perspectives, psychiatric symptoms have special significance in psychiatry. This study comparatively describes the psychopathological symptoms as noted in primary care (402) and general hospital (138) referrals. METHODS: Five hundred and forty psychiatric referrals, retrieved randomly, were reviewed extensively for collecting relevant data. RESULTS: Both hospital and primary care referrals were observed to have a variety of psychological and somatic symptoms of variable frequencies, which were suggestive of several psychopathological domains. Functional psychotic (19.5% versus 10%), mood (27.5% versus 23%) and psychosomatic (7% versus 2%) symptoms were significantly noted in hospital referrals as compared to primary care referrals …

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing And Patterns Of Resistance At A Tertiary Care Center, Javed Akhter, Mohammed O. Qutub, Syed M. Qadri
Saudi Medical Journal
Clinical microbiology laboratories are faced with the challenge of accurately detecting emerging antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens. In recent years, vancomycin resistant enterococci have emerged, as have penicillin resistant pneumococci and more recently, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin. In order to detect these emerging resistant pathogens it is essential that antimicrobial susceptibility be carried out by laboratories as an integral part of therapeutic strategies. In this review, we discuss patterns of susceptibility of different antimicrobials as experienced at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, a tertiary care center in Riyadh.
