Applying The Transtheoretical Model Of Change To Stress Management Among Adolescents: Development And Validation Of Decisional Balance And Confidence Measures, Leanne M. Mauriello

Open Access Master's Theses

The negative physical and psychological health consequences of stress are a significant and prevalent concern for our society. This study proposes using the Transtheoretical Model to increase stress management behaviors among adolescents. As a first step in doing so, measures of decisional balance and self-efficacy were developed on a pilot sample of 317 ninth and tenth graders from a public, New England high school. Using a split-half cross-validation procedure, exploratory and confirmatory analyses produced two, internally consistent instruments. The resulting decisional balance measure includes 4 items to measure the pros of practicing stress management and 4 items to measure the …

Cellular Senescence: Ex Vivo P53-Dependent Asymmetric Cell Kinetics., Lakshmi Rambhatla, Shirley A. Bohn, Patrizia B. Stadler, Jonathan T. Boyd, Ronald A. Coss, James L. Sherley

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Although senescence is a defining property of euploid mammalian cells, its physiologic basis remains obscure. Previously, cell kinetics properties of normal tissue cells have not been considered in models for senescence. We now provide evidence that senescence is in fact the natural consequence of normal in vivo somatic stem cell kinetics extended in culture. This concept of senescence is based on our discovery that cells engineered to conditionally express the well-recognized tumor suppressor protein and senescence factor, p53, exhibit asymmetric cell kinetics. In vivo, asymmetric cell kinetics are essential for maintenance of somatic stem cells; ex vivo, the same cell …

A Framework For The Implementation Of An Iso 9000 Based Certification Program For Printed Circuit Board Manufacturers, Adam Y. Maamoun Jan 2001

A Framework For The Implementation Of An Iso 9000 Based Certification Program For Printed Circuit Board Manufacturers, Adam Y. Maamoun

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

ISO 9000:2000 is the newest version of the ISO 9000 family of standards. Unlike the 1994 version, it does not distinguish between servicing, testing and designing standards. It emphasizes quality improvement rather than quality control and briefly explains how to implement the Plan-Do-Check- Act (PDCA) cycle for improvement and the use of statistical techniques to improve the quality of process and product instead of controlling the quality of the output. The thesis explains why companies need to be certified and how to implement quality improvement programs.

The objective of this thesis is to provide generic certification guidelines for printed circuit …

Supreme Law Or Basic Law? The Decline Of The Concept Of Constitutional Supremacy, Rett R. Ludwikowski Jan 2001

Supreme Law Or Basic Law? The Decline Of The Concept Of Constitutional Supremacy, Rett R. Ludwikowski

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the decline of constitutional supremacy in the context of increasing international legal influences and the rise of supranational organizations. It argues that the traditional dualistic view of domestic and international law is no longer tenable, as national constitutions are no longer the sole supreme law. Instead, the legal landscape has become multifaceted, with overlapping national, supranational, and international legal structures. This shift is attributed to the erosion of state sovereignty and the integration of international law into domestic legal systems, even in countries like the United States.

The Doctrine Of Non-Inquiry And The Preservation Of Human Rights:-Is There Room For Reconciliation?, Michael S. Topiel Jan 2001

The Doctrine Of Non-Inquiry And The Preservation Of Human Rights:-Is There Room For Reconciliation?, Michael S. Topiel

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note explores the tension between individual human rights under international law and state interests in combating cross-border crime, focusing on the doctrine of noninquiry in extradition cases. It argues that while the Convention Against Torture imposes obligations to prevent extradition to situations of torture, the doctrine of noninquiry—where courts avoid scrutinizing the requesting state’s justice system—remains crucial for maintaining separation of powers and diplomatic relations. The analysis highlights the balancing act between protecting human rights and ensuring international cooperation in law enforcement.

Spatial Assessment Of Nonpoint Phosphorus Sources Using Streambed Sediment Monitoring In The Kings River Basin, Nw Arkansas, Jason W. White Jan 2001

Spatial Assessment Of Nonpoint Phosphorus Sources Using Streambed Sediment Monitoring In The Kings River Basin, Nw Arkansas, Jason W. White

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This study of the Kings River Basin provides a watershed-scale assessment of streambed sediment-Phosphorus (P) and its sources on the landscape. The Kings River drains into Table Rock Lake where surface algal blooms have concerned water scientists and disrupted summer tourism. There are questions about how sediment loads, widespread poultry and cattle operations, and sewage treatment plants are affecting water quality. Previous water quality studies across the U.S. have generally evaluated watercolurnn P. In contrast, few studies have used streambed sediment monitoring to detect P levels at a watershed-scale, and none have been attempted in the Kings River Basin. Sediment …

Surrogacy From The Perspectives Of Economic And Civil Liberties, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2001

Surrogacy From The Perspectives Of Economic And Civil Liberties, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The field of law and economics, of which Judge Posner is the leading theorist, has offered a rich and sophisticated framework for thinking about a wide variety of problems at the interface of law and society. The theory, based on economic principles for understanding behavioral incentives and disincentives, is widely taught in law schools and is influential in scholarship. I have not always agreed with the application of the theory to complex problems of individual and group behavior, yet I constantly have been impressed with the elegance of the writing and analysis.

Judge Posner thinks about surrogacy arrangements in terms …

Transition From Moderate To Excessive Wheel Running In Rats: A Function Of Access Length?, Sara B. Lattanzio Jan 2001

Transition From Moderate To Excessive Wheel Running In Rats: A Function Of Access Length?, Sara B. Lattanzio

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In rats, long daily wheel access produces an escalation to excessive levels of running while short daily access results in low stable levels of running. paralleling patterns of cocaine- taking (Lattanzio et al., 2000). Experiment I explored the effects of previous running experience (Phase l) on fixture running and feeding (Phase ll). Rats with 24 h daily access in Phase I escalated wheel running to a plateau of about 7000 wheel turns per day, while rats with 2 h daily access ran at low levels (about I000 wheel turns over the final 8 days of Phase l). The 2 h …

Relationships Of Stemborer Damage And Plant Physical Conditions To Maize Yield In A Semi-Arid Zone Of Eastern Kenya, Josephine Moraa Songa, Zhou Guofa, William Allan Overholt Jan 2001

Relationships Of Stemborer Damage And Plant Physical Conditions To Maize Yield In A Semi-Arid Zone Of Eastern Kenya, Josephine Moraa Songa, Zhou Guofa, William Allan Overholt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

A field survey on maize stemborers, stemborer damage, maize plant physical conditions, and maize yield was conducted in eastern Kenya under natural conditions. Chilo partellus was the dominant stemborer accounting for 89.5 % of all borers. Stemborer damage greatly reduced maize yield, with tunnel lengths greater than 20 cm causing a 40 % reduction of potential yield. A 33 % yield loss was found in plants with more than one stemborer exit hole. Each stemborer (at harvest time) was correlated with a 8-10 % yield loss. Good plant physical characteristics significantly increased grain yield. Principle component analysis showed that stemborer …
