Are Inflammatory Cytokines Potential Mediators Of Phenytoin-Induced Gingival Overgrowth?, Nurcan Buduneli̇, Gül Ati̇lla, Neci̇l Kütükçüler

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The levels of interleukin-1beta, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin 6 in gingival crevicular fluid of phenytoin-treated patients (from sites exhibiting overgrowth and sites not exhibiting overgrowth) and control subjects were investigated. Six epileptic patients exhibiting severe phenytoin-induced gingival overgrowth, 12 patients with chronic gingivitis and 11 subjects with clinically healthy periodontium were included in the study. The cytokine levels were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and expressed as ng/2 sites. Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Kruskall-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman rank correlation were used for statistical analysis of the data. Overgrown sites showed significantly higher levels of interleukin-1beta compared to the …

Becoming American: The Hmong American Experience, Kou Yang Jan 2001

Becoming American: The Hmong American Experience, Kou Yang

Ethnic Studies Review

Hmong Americans, who came from a pre-literate society and rural background, went through many acculturation barriers and have had many successes between the time they first arrived in 1975 and the year 2000. Their first decade was preoccupied with their struggle to overcome cultural shock and acculturation difficulties. The second decade is their turning point to be new Americans, beginning to run for political office, establish business enterprises, achieve in education, and reduce their high rate of unemployment and welfare participation. Hmong Americans in 2000 appeared to have achieved much, yet have some serious challenges still ahead.

Ethnic Identity, Risk, And Protective Factors Related To Substance Abuse Among Mexican American Students, Edward Codina, Zenong Yin, Jesse T. Zapata, David S. Katims

Ethnic Studies Review

This study examines the relationship between ethnic identity, risk and protective factors for substance use and academic achievement. Risk factors include deviant behavior and susceptibility to peer influence, while the protective factor is self-reported "confidence" not to use substances. The sample consists of 2,370 Mexican American students enrolled in eighth, ninth, and tenth grades. Results of the analysis (MANOVA) revealed that females had more positive ethnic identity than males. Furthermore, males were significantly more susceptible to peer influence, reported higher levels of deviant behavior, used more substances and had lower grade point averages than females. There was no significant difference …

Adjourning Justice: New York State's Failure To Support Assigned Counsel Violates The Rights Of Families In Child Abuse And Neglect Proceedings, Sheri Bonstelle, Christine Schessler

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Comment evaluates New York City’s framework for assigning counsel to Family Court litigants, known as the 18-B system. Recognizing the lack of government support for 18-B attorneys, the author examines existing proposals to alter the Family Court system, and suggests a plan of action for a legislative task force. The Comment outlines the evolution of the assigned counsel system in New York and the history of child welfare policy, and discusses the roles of the Family Court attorneys, judges, and the legislature in maintaining adequate representation for parents. Next, the author examines the aspects of the Family Court and …

Privatization And The Democracy Problem In Globalization: Making Markets More Accountable Through Administrative Law, Alfred C. Aman Jr. Jan 2001

Privatization And The Democracy Problem In Globalization: Making Markets More Accountable Through Administrative Law, Alfred C. Aman Jr.

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article analyzes the privatization of traditional government services by placing such changes in governance in a global context. Looking into what domestic institutions have to do with the global economy, this Article argues that the privatization of governmental services is very much a piece with deregulatory trends in the United States and elsewhere in which state-centered approaches to a variety of regulatory problems increasingly have given way to markets and market discourses at all levels of government. This Article then considers the effects of such privatization trends on the public/private distinction itself, and its implications for democracy in general. …

Discipline Of Special-Education Students Under The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Allan G. Osborne, Jr. Ed.D Jan 2001

Discipline Of Special-Education Students Under The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Allan G. Osborne, Jr. Ed.D

Fordham Urban Law Journal

In 1975, Congress passed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. Since 1975, Congress has amended the statute several times. One of those amendments, enacted in 1990, gave the law a new name: the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”). The law, as initially enacted and amended, was silent on the subject of discipline. In 1997, Congress passed the most comprehensive amendments to the IDEA to date. The amendments included provisions on the discipline of students with disabilities. Many of those provisions simply codified existing case law; others, however, helped clarify formerly opaque areas. This article will analyze the requirements …

Harry Maybury Cross: In Memoriam, William B. Stoebuck

Washington Law Review

Just because you were from Ritzville, where Harry Cross was born on August 23, 1913, it would not mean you were "ritzy." The town is a plain one, named, for a plain man, Philip Ritz, in the plains country of Eastern Washington, the county seat of Adams County. There Harry Cross grew up, graduating from Ritzville High School, valedictorian of his class. His parents were substantial citizens of the town, his father the owner of a title insurance company and a sometime member of the Washington State Legislature. All three of the Cross brothers must have been influenced by their …

A system is developed for tracking moving objects though natural scenery. A technique is presented for performing change detection on imagery to determine the difference between two images or a sequence of images. Form there an algorithm is presented to detect the presence of a new object and/or the deletion of objects. Then the application of a Variable Structure Interacting Multiple Model tracking filter is presented. The method of performing change detection is based upon the concept of image subspace projection. A set of basis image maps are formed when combined with a mixing matrix can recreate the original image. …

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 In Glioma Invasion, Nicole Danielle Sauers Jan 2001

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 In Glioma Invasion, Nicole Danielle Sauers

Master's Theses

Overexpression of matrix metalloproteinase 2, MMP-2, is correlated with highgrade gliomas in vivo. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether MMP-2 overexpression in glioma cell lines leads to increased invasion of glioma cells in vitro. The entire MMP-2 gene was isolated from U87, a glioma cell line known to have high expression of wild-type MMP-2. This :tvIMP-2 gene was inserted in a sense and antisense orientation into pCR3 .1 vectors with a CMV promoter to ensure high levels of expression. Glioma cell lines were transfected with the sense and antisense constructs, as well as the pCR3.l vector alone …

Dynamic Update Techniques For Online Maps And Attributes Data, Thanh H. Pham Jan 2001

Dynamic Update Techniques For Online Maps And Attributes Data, Thanh H. Pham

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Online databases containing geographic and related tabular data for maps and attributes often require continuous updates from widely distributed sources afield. For some applications, these data are dynamic, and thus are of little value if they do not reflect the latest information or changes. A status map that depicts graphically temporal data affecting accountability is an example of this type of data. How can accommodations be made collectively for the perpetual data updates in the database and the need to deliver online information in real time without making concessions? The goal of the dissertation was to analyze and evaluate techniques …

PCOM Scholarly Works

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is an activity-dependent enhancement of synaptic efficacy, considered a model of learning and memory. The biochemical cascade producing LTP requires activation of Src, which upregulates the function of NMDA receptors (NMDARs), but how Src becomes activated is unknown. Here, we show that the focal adhesion kinase CAKß/Pyk2 upregulated NMDAR function by activating Src in CA1 hippocampal neurons. Induction of LTP was prevented by blocking CAKß/Pyk2, and administering CAKß/Pyk2 intracellularly mimicked and occluded LTP. Tyrosine phosphorylation of CAKß/Pyk2 and its association with Src was increased by stimulation that produced LTP. Finally, CAKß/Pyk2-stimulated enhancement of synaptic AMPA responses was …

Does School District Consolidation Cut Costs?, William Duncombe, John Yinger Jan 2001

Does School District Consolidation Cut Costs?, William Duncombe, John Yinger

Center for Policy Research

Over the last 50 years, consolidation has dramatically reduced the number of school districts in the United States, and state governments still recommend consolidation, especially in rural school districts, as a way to improve school district efficiency. However, state policies encouraging consolidation are often challenged on the grounds that they do not lead to cost savings and instead foster learning environments that harm student performance. Existing evidence on this topic comes largely from educational cost functions, which indicate that instructional and administrative costs are far lower in a district with 3,000 pupils than in a district with 100 pupils. However, …

Eminent Domain, Exactions, And Railbanking: Can Recreational Trails Survive The Court’S Fifth Amendment Takings Jurisprudence?, Danaya C. Wright Jan 2001

Eminent Domain, Exactions, And Railbanking: Can Recreational Trails Survive The Court’S Fifth Amendment Takings Jurisprudence?, Danaya C. Wright

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article attempts to locate the legal aspects of recreational trail development within the increasingly powerful property rights movement. The most complex result of this rising property rights rhetoric is a clear shift in constitutional takings doctrine to be more sympathetic to landowners' arguments. Thus, the interplay of takings decisions and trails development will be the focus of most of this article.

Part II provides a brief account of the legal structure of governmental land use controls and the current state of takings jurisprudence to form a basic background for the different ways in which recreational trails have been developed. …

Student Scholarship, In One Place, But Not Another: When The Law Encourages Breastfeeding In Public While Simultaneously Discouraging It At Work, Emily F. Suski Jan 2001

Student Scholarship, In One Place, But Not Another: When The Law Encourages Breastfeeding In Public While Simultaneously Discouraging It At Work, Emily F. Suski

Faculty Publications By Year

In this Essay, the author takes a novel approach to the topic of breastfeeding and work by exploring the trend among states to exempt breastfeeding from criminal indecent exposure laws and comparing this trend to the support, or lack thereof, in laws and policy for breastfeeding at work. The author's comparison reveals that while there is a trend to support breastfeeding in public, there is no such trend in the law to support breastfeeding in the relatively more private work environment.

The author argues that this disparity is both counterintuitive and serves to limit women's choices regarding breastfeeding and work. …

Integrating The Transtheoretical Model: A Quantitative Analysis In The Area Of Sun Exposure, Janet L. Johnson

Open Access Dissertations

The constructs involved in the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) have been shown to have similar relationships to the Stages of Change across a variety of behaviors. While much work has been done investigating the way the constructs interact cross-sectionally and longitudinally, a completely integrated look at all the constructs of the TTM has not yet been successful. This study integrated all constructs of the TTM related to increase of sun protective behavior across three time points.

The sample used in this study is a portion of a sample collected for three larger, multiple behavior intervention studies. Assessments were collected at baseline, …
