Gaba-A Receptor Subunit Alterations Following Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury And The Effects Of An Nmda Antagonist: A Western Blot Analysis, Cynthia J. Gibson
Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) produces an acute phase of neuronal excitation followed by a chronic phase of depressed neuronal function. Alterations in excitatory and inhibitory receptor interactions may be dynamically involved in subsequent long-term detriments in neuronal and cognitive functioning. TBI- induced elevations in intracellular calcium concentrations ([Ca2+]i) are mediated primarily by the NMDA receptor. Elevated [Ca2+]i may trigger intracellular mechanisms which drive changes in GABA-A receptor protein synthesis and expression, ultimately resulting in receptor dysfunction.
Western blot analysis was used to investigate alterations to GABA-A receptor subunits α1 and β33 in the …
Multivalent Metadata : Exploiting The Layers Of Meaning In Digital Resources, Alison M. Anderson
Multivalent Metadata : Exploiting The Layers Of Meaning In Digital Resources, Alison M. Anderson
Theses : Honours
The rapid growth of the World Wide Web was due in part to the simplicity of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). It is anticipated that the next generation of web technology, coined the Semantic Web, by Tim Berners-Lee (1989, p. 1), will be driven by the Extensible Markup Language (XML). The XML suite of technologies provides a framework for the application of metadata, and hence semantic information, to web resources. Advantages of a semantic web include improved sharing and reuse of resources, enhanced search mechanisms and knowledge management. The knowledge or meaning contained in digital information may vary according to …

The Design Of 3d Cyberspace As User Interface: Advantages And Limitations, Maria Borisovna Quick
Theses : Honours
Virtual reality propagandists, technologists and the Internet community have long debated the issue of the usability of online three-dimensional (3D) environments. A lot of work was published about the benefits of 3D spaces for human-computer interaction and information visualisation due to their realism (Anders, Kalawsky, Crossley, Davies, McGrath, Rejman-Greene, 1998, Hamit, 1993, Heim, 1992, Aukstakalnis, Blatner, Roth, 1992). This topic also receives continuous industry support including standardisation of Virtual Reality Modeling Language ( VRML, VRML Consortium, 1997) and the more recent Macromedia & Intel alliance "to bring web 3D to the mainstream" (200 1, Intel Corporation). The actual implementation …

Ethics, Ethnicity, And Dementia: A "Culture-Fair" Approach To Bioethical Advocacy In Dementing Illness, Ramon Valle
Ethics, Ethnicity, And Dementia: A "Culture-Fair" Approach To Bioethical Advocacy In Dementing Illness, Ramon Valle
Georgia Law Review
The aims of this discussion are to twofold. The first is to apply what Post et al. term a cultural lens to bioethical decisionmaking processes in dementing illness.' The second is to assist the ethical advocate to develop a cultural analysis strategy for application of ethical decisionmaking processes within ethnically diverse populations. An assumption made here is that, as human inventions, ethical systems are an extension of culture, taking their imprint from the ethnocultural systems from which they emerge.' It is true that ethical systems and their principles can be widely shared across cultures. Modern bioethics, as promulgated within the …

September 11th And Beyond: What Is The Role For Public Health?, Susan J. Koch
International Journal of Global Health
As Maureen McCue so aptly describes in this second issue of the International Journal of Global Health, public health professionals can and often do play a crucial role in responding to natural disasters like Hurricane Mitch. But with the world still shuddering from the events on September 11th when over 5,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, public health professionals and those who educate them are now also compelled to examine and expand their roles in responding to a new global threat - now evident to all.

Environmental Health Research And Student Training Project, Transylvania, Romania, Catherine Zeman, Diane Depken
International Journal of Global Health
Nitrate/nitrite impacts human health through a number of mechanisms via involvement in potentially detrimental biochemical processes. In the acute sense, nitrite interacts with the iron components of the hemoglobin molecule, the functional, biochemical unit of the red blood cell responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. These iron components are essential for the normal bonding of the hemoglobin molecule with oxygen and when chemically altered, result in a form of hemoglobin known as methemoglobin. When somewhere between 3-15% of the hemoglobin in the blood is reduced to methemoglobin an individual is said to have methemoglobinemia due to the low oxygen …

Are We Buyers Or Hosts? A Memetic Approach To The First Amendment, Jeffrey E. Stake
Are We Buyers Or Hosts? A Memetic Approach To The First Amendment, Jeffrey E. Stake
Articles by Maurer Faculty
The First Amendment is often analyzed using the metaphor of the marketplace of ideas. Making use of memetic analysis, this article suggests that ideas should not be treated as inert products that we choose but as living things that sometimes exert some influence over their environment. Some of the ideas are more adept at surviving than others, and the ones that survive will not necessarily be good for humans. To account for the ability of some memes to replicate dangerously, the First Amendment should be read to allow governments to punish a speaker who advocates or threatens physical injury (other …

Asian American Mental Health Clients: Effects Of Ethnic Match And Age On Global Assessment And Visitation, Richard H. Dana, Glenn Gamst, Aghop Der-Karabetian, Terry Kramer
Regional Research Institute for Human Services
Effects of client-counselor ethnic match (i.e., match, no match) and client age group (child, adult) on counselor-evaluated Global Assessment of Function (GAF) and visitation were investigated. The sample consisted of 253 Asian-American outpatient clients (24.9% children 75.1% adults) of a community mental health center. Unadjusted results indicated that ethnically matched clients had more positive GAF evaluations and more clinic visits than nonmatched clients. When adjusted for eight covariates, results showed ethnically matched clients continued to show higher levels of visitation. Analysis of separate diagnostic categories showed that ethnically matched mood-disorder clients had higher levels of visitation. Conversely, nonethnically matched anxiety …
