Faculty Scholarship

This article will describe internalized oppression and racism and expose the harms they cause. It will also dissect the reasons we engage in internalized oppression and racism and explain that once the reasons are exposed, it will be easier to engage in a conscious effort to reduce and ultimately eradicate internalized oppression and racism. Part II of this article defines internalized oppression and internalized racism and elaborates on ways that they are generally expressed in the Latino community. Standing And Spending—The Role Of Legal And Equitable Principles, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

The stated purpose of this Conference is to examine the proper scope of the spending power: “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, and to pay the Debts and to provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States.” My assignment is to track the relationship, if any, between the expansion of the spending power and the articulation of the standing doctrine as a principle of American Constitutional law. The connection, between the two, displays at least historical intimacy. The rise of modern standing doctrine in American Constitutional Law can …

Unique Characteristics Of A Graduate Program In Applied Communication, Stuart M. Schrader, Kim White Mills, Robert Dick

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This paper addresses one Communication Department's sojourn in designing, developing, and proposing a unique Master of Arts in Applied Communication. Our discipline has long acknowledged the importance of applied communication scholarship and the marketplace has frequently confirmed the importance of providing applied communication knowledge to produce employees who are competent communicators. We are, however, still without terminal graduate programs that are rooted in the foundation of applied communication. Our department's program is reflexively framing its program using applied communication assumptions.

Computer-Assisted Evaluation Of Speaking Competencies In The Basic Speech Course, Chris R. Sawyer, Ralph R. Behnke

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the computer-assisted evaluation of speaking competencies in the basic speech course. Whenever a college-level course utilizes a number of instructors and sections, administrators responsible for ensuring the quality of that course become increasingly concerned about issues of equivalency or the extent to which students in the various sections of the course are receiving essentially the same educational experience. educators have recommended the use of student portfolios in courses featuring public speaking. In this instructional strategy, a student's work during a course is compiled and reviewed periodically throughout the academic term. This improvements will dramatically enhance record keeping …

An Analysis Of Anemia And Child Mortality, B.J. Brabin, Zul Premji, F. Verhoeff Jan 2001

An Analysis Of Anemia And Child Mortality, B.J. Brabin, Zul Premji, F. Verhoeff

Pathology, East Africa

The relationship of anemia as a risk factor for child mortality was analyzed by using cross-sectional, longitudinal and case-control studies, and randomized trials. Five methods of estimation were adopted: 1) the proportion of child deaths attributable to anemia; 2) the proportion of anemic children who die in hospital studies; 3) the population-attributable risk of child mortality due to anemia; 4) survival analyses of mortality in anemic children; and 5) cause-specific anemia-related child mortality. Most of the data available were hospital based. For children aged 0-5 y the percentage of deaths due to anemia was comparable for reports from highly malarious …

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Clenbuterol is a β2 agonist/antagonist bronchodilator, and its identification in post-race samples may lead to sanctions. The objective of this study was to develop a specific and highly sensitive serum quantitation method for clenbuterol that would allow effective regulatory control of this agent in horses. Therefore, clenbuterol-d9 was synthesized for use as an internal standard, an automated solid-phase extraction method was developed, and both were used in conjunction with a multiple reaction monitoring liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) method to allow unequivocal identification and quantitation of clenbuterol in 2 mL of serum at concentrations as low as 10 …
