Polymerase Chain Reaction (Pcr) Techniques For The Identification Of Uncultivable Oral Microorganisms, W.H. Himratul-Aznita

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Until today there are still a high percentage of oral microorganisms have not been identified due to inability to isolate using the cultural method. However, identification of uncultivable microorganisms associated with disease will permits clinicians for a more accurate diagnosis, treatment and preventive measures. Unculturable microorganisms are also involved in disease and may account for treatment failure since their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents would be unknown. Thus, the opportunity for a rational approach to the treatment of disease relies on the state of knowledge concerning its aetiology and pathogenesis. Recently developed molecular methods have made it possible to characterise mixed …

Recent Development Of The Yiguan Dao Fayi Chongde Sub Branch In Singapore, Malaysia And Thailand, Khin Wah Soo

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The Unity Sect (Yiguan Dao) is a lay voluntary religious organization of congregational character. Notwithstanding the fact that the sect remains largely unknown to the general public, it continues to progress with its proselytism at an ever greater rate in the last two decades outside Taiwan and Hong Kong, Thanks to the pioneering exploration and studies by Mr Li Shiyu (1948), and David Jordan and Daniel L. Overmyer (1986) on the sect in Mainland China and Taiwan, the study of the Sect in peninsular Malaysia (1997) during my Ph.D. program at U.B.C. (19941997) aimed also at contributing towards these traditions …

The Management Of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, C.L. Teng, Y. Shajahan, Ee Ming Khoo, I. Nurjahan, K.C. Leong, T.G. Yap

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Upper respiratory tract infections are the commonest reason for consultation in primary care. Group A β-haemolytic Streptococcus (GABHS), the most important bacterial pathogen in this condition, can be cultured from about 300 of patients, more so in children than adults. Clinical features that are predictive of positive GABHS culture are absence of cough, fever, cervical adenopathy, tonsillar enlargement and tonsillar exudate. Use of a sore throat score can help in the detection of streptococcal throat infection. Symptomatic therapies which are useful include anticholinergic, antihistamine, decongestant, humified hot air and Vitamin C. Antibiotics are universally over-prescribed in this condition as a …

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (Cla), Body Fat, And Apoptosis, Jess L. Miner, C. Cederberg, Merlyn K. Nielsen, Xiaoli Chen, Clifton Baile

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine if consumption of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) by mice could induce apoptosis in adipose tissue. Other objectives were to determine the influence of feeding mice CLA for ≤2 weeks on body fat, energy expenditure, and feed intake.

Research Methods and Procedures: A mixture of CLA isomers (predominantly c9,t11 and t10,c12) was included in the AIN-93G diet at 0, 1, and 2%, and fed to mice for 12 days (Trial 1), or was included at 2% and fed to mice for 0, 5, and 14 days (Trial 2). Feed intake …

Use Of Intra-Uterine Insemination Of Pigs: Pros, Cons & Economics, Donald G. Levis, Scott Burroughs, Sara Williams

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Reproductive performance is a major concern for pork producers because the financial stability of a pork enterprise that produces piglets is substantially influenced by fecundity index (FI) for number of piglets born alive (FI = farrowing rate x litter size born alive). It is well known that farrowing rate and litter size are affected by numerous factors. A new reproductive technique that pork producers are hearing and reading about is intra-uterine insemination. Intra-uterine insemination is the process of placing spermatozoa directly into the uterine body instead of the cervix as traditionally done. The uterine body is located between the cervix …

Effect Of Animal Grouping On Feeding Behavior And Intake Of Dairy Cattle, R. J. Grant, J. L. Albright Jan 2001

Effect Of Animal Grouping On Feeding Behavior And Intake Of Dairy Cattle, R. J. Grant, J. L. Albright

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Although data are scarce, it is clear that grouping strategy can have a significant impact on the feeding behavior and feed intake of dairy cattle. Feed intake is controlled by ruminoreticular fill and physiological mechanisms, but grouping is a component of the cow’s feeding environment that can modulate intake as a result of its impact on cow comfort, competition for feed and other resources, and herd health. Social dominance and competition for feed impact feeding behavior and proper grouping strategy will minimize the negative impact of excessive competition on intake and enhance beneficial effects of group feeding such as social …

Atresia Revisited: Two Basic Patterns Of Atresia Of Bovine Antral Follicles, H. F. Irving-Rodgers, I. L. Van Wezel, M. L. Mussard, J. E. Kinder, R. J. Rodgers Jan 2001

Atresia Revisited: Two Basic Patterns Of Atresia Of Bovine Antral Follicles, H. F. Irving-Rodgers, I. L. Van Wezel, M. L. Mussard, J. E. Kinder, R. J. Rodgers

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Our observations of bovine follicles indicated that the original histological classifications of atresia were inaccurate. A detailed histological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study of antral follicles from bovine ovaries collected from an abattoir and from animals whose large follicles had been monitored by ultrasonography was conducted to investigate this further. Nidogen and CD68 were immunolocalized to observe the follicular basal lamina and macrophages, respectively. In randomly collected ovaries, approximately one quarter of all antral follicles were undergoing antral atresia, as designated in this study. Antral atresia was characterized by early destruction of the layers of the membrana granulosa closest to the …

Molecular Cloning Of An \Alpha-Amylase Gene From Bacillus Subtilis Rskk246 And Its Expression In Escherichia Coli And In Bacillus Subtilis, Numan Özcan, Adem Altinalan, Mehmet Sai̇t Eki̇nci̇ Jan 2001

Molecular Cloning Of An \Alpha-Amylase Gene From Bacillus Subtilis Rskk246 And Its Expression In Escherichia Coli And In Bacillus Subtilis, Numan Özcan, Adem Altinalan, Mehmet Sai̇t Eki̇nci̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Bacillus subtilis RSKK246 was found to produce approximately a 65-kDa \alpha-amylase enzyme. A gene was isolated encoding \alpha-amylase activity that corresponded to this size and was inserted into pUC18 plasmid which was transferred to Escherichia coli. An approximately 1.7kbp fragment, which contains a whole \alpha-amylase gene, was excised and inserted into pUB110 and then transferred into the different B. subtilis strains including RSKK246, RSKK243, RSKK244, YB886 and ORBAM. The a-amylase gene was cloned into the plasmids and expressed with its own promoter, and this promoter sequence seemed to function in the E. coli and in all B. subtilis strains. Specific …

From Raw Materials To Customers: Supply Chain Management In The Service Industry, Jack Cook, Kathy Debree, Amie Feroleto

Articles

No company can operate without a supply chain. recent years have seen change in the way many companies manage their supply chains - holistically rather than as a series of separate pieces. Manufacturers have taken the lead in improving supply chain management, but now the fast-growing service industry is adopting these principles. A study in the health care area illustrates fast-growing service industry is adopting these principles. A study in the health care area illustrates how service businesses can benefit from the decreased lead times, faster product development, higher quality, and reduced costs that can accompany successful supply chain management.
