Public Sphere In Cyberspace?, Mark D. Johns Jan 2001

Public Sphere In Cyberspace?, Mark D. Johns

Iowa Journal of Communication

According to Jurgen Habermas, a public sphere is a site where individuals come together to freely and openly express their opinions regarding matters of common interest. Informed by Habermas' discussion, the author investigated the social farms generated in computer-mediated communication and examined whether the social structures in cyberspace are conducive to the formation of a public sphere. Communication among the members of three Internet newsgroups were examined to locate the formal features of the social relationships constructed in this cyberspace. The conclusion is that while a public sphere may be possible, cyberspace often falls short of fulfilling its potential for …

Low-Saturated-Fat Soybean Oil Reduces Saturated Fat In School Menus, J. M. Mahnken, S. F. Lutz, C. J. Anders, W. R. Fehr

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

This study evaluated the impact of using low-saturated-fat soybean {Glycine max (L.) Merr.} oil on the saturated fat content of school menus. Seventy-six weekly menus were obtained from the Iowa Department of Education during School Meals Initiative reviews for the 1996-1997 school year. Three modifications were performed on school menus using the Nuttikids computer program: Low-saturated- fat (LSF) soybean oil replaced traditional vegetable oil in menu items; LSF soybean oil was substituted for traditional vegetable oil, solid fats, and egg yolks in recipes; and a menu simulation was conducted where oils and solid fats used in menu items were …

Species Specific Odds Of Occurrence Of Blackspot Among Fish From The Maple River In Western Iowa, John W. Mellen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Odds ratio analysis was used to evaluate the relative likelihood of occurrence of blackspot (Neascus pyriformil, Chandler) infections among 14 species of fish collected from the Maple River in Buena Vista and Ida Counties in western Iowa. Prevalence estimates ranged from 0% to 47.4% with a mean prevalence of 11.9%. The rank ordering of odds ratios of infection allowed the species to be categorized as those with risks greater than, less than, and not different from average risk to infection within the Maple River sample. The species with the largest odds ratio was the bluntnose minnow, (Pimephales notatus) (odds ratio …

Faculty Publications

Part I of this article reviews these new legislative provisions, discussing their requirements as well as the general impetus behind their enactment. Part II discusses both the history of rape prosecution and feminist efforts in the 1970s and 1980s to eliminate barriers to successful rape prosecutions. This part also elaborates upon the myth of the crazed rapist and its relationship to feminist reform efforts. Part III explains how the current legislation is rooted in and reinforces that myth by encouraging unsupportable distinctions among rape defendants. Finally, Part IV discusses the feminist response to such laws and argues for a more …

Antioxidation Activity Of Dhea And Its Mechanisms, Sun Yang, Han Rui Jan 2001

Antioxidation Activity Of Dhea And Its Mechanisms, Sun Yang, Han Rui

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the anti-oxidative activity of a new chemopreventive agent--dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and the mechanisms of action by which DHEA protect the thymocytes and DNA from oxidative damage. Methods: Agarose gel electrophoresis, flow cytometry, single cel! gel electrophoresis, chemiluminescence assay, triazolyl blue tetrazolumbromide (MTT) colorimetry, and three dimensional collagen gel assay were used. Results: In agarose gel electrophoresis, 10 nmol/L DHEA blocked the typical DNA degradation (DNA Ladder) induced by H2O2. DHEA 2. 5 nmol/L and 10 nmol/L both significantly decreased the percentage of characteristic apoptotic DNA …

The Ada Mediation Guidelines: A Community Collaboration Moves The Field Forward, Judith Cohen

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

The purpose of this article is to describe the various issues – such as accessible process and informed consent – faced by a group of twelve mediators and how they resolved these issues. This group, known as the ADA Mediation Guidelines Work Group (“WG”), evolved from informal discussions regarding the lack of standards in ADA mediations and the need to address the quality of the process. The WG raised the following questions, among others, in its internal discussions: What constitutes effective ADA mediator training? Are ADA disputes issues of private concern between the parties, public policy concerns, or both? How …

Ecuador: Use Commercial Marketing To Increase Sustainability, Frontiers In Reproductive Health Jan 2001

Ecuador: Use Commercial Marketing To Increase Sustainability, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

Many nongovernmental organizations sell contraceptives through retail outlets to generate income and expand access to these products. In 1998 Centro Médico de Orientación y Planifación Familiar (CEMOPLAF) employed 25 sales agents in 14 cities throughout Ecuador. These agents sold products, including contraceptive methods and home pregnancy tests, to pharmacies, physicians, other distributors, and nontraditional outlets. Contraceptive sales were CEMOPLAF’s largest source of revenue in 1997. Sales had grown rapidly during 1996–97, but CEMOPLAF managers did not know whether product sales were profitable. With support from the Population Council and Family Health International, CEMOPLAF made a detailed analysis of product sales …
