The Relation Of Religious Orientation, Coping Behaviors, And Adjustment In Family Caregivers Of Hospice Patients, Rachel Leigh Huhra Jan 2001

The Relation Of Religious Orientation, Coping Behaviors, And Adjustment In Family Caregivers Of Hospice Patients, Rachel Leigh Huhra

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The relation of religious orientation, coping behaviors, and adjustment (i.e. depression, anger, anxiety, and life satisfaction) was assessed in 34 family caregivers of hospice patients in a veterans affairs hospice program. Intrinsic religious orientation was positively correlated with positive religious coping behaviors and life satisfaction; and negatively correlated with depression, anxiety, and inward hostility. Extrinsic religious orientation was positively correlated with negative and positive religious coping behaviors and an outward expression of anger. It was not correlated with higher levels of life satisfaction, depression, or anxiety. Positive religious coping predicted depression and inward hostility beyond non-religious coping. Study limitations and …

Blessed Mother Theodore Guerin, Bishop Celestine De La Hailandière, And Their Seven-Year Time Of Trials," 1840-1847 ", Rosemary K. Halter

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Blessed Mother Theodore (b. Anne-Therese) Guerin founded the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. She was beatified by the Catholic Church on 28 October 1998. Celestine de la Hailandiere was the second bishop of Vincennes, Indiana. The “time of trials” is a period of disputes and misunderstandings between the two which lasted from 1840 to 1847. It culminated with Mother Theodore locked in a parlor, excommunicated, and expelled from the diocese, and with Bishop Hailandiere resigning from the episcopacy. The purpose of the study is threefold: to promulgate the life story of Mother Theodore; to examine her spirituality; and …

Avian Use Of Various Bait Mixtures Offered In Harvested Cornfields During Spring Migration In South Dakota, George M. Linz, H. Jeffrey Homan, Ryan L. Wimberly Jan 2001

Avian Use Of Various Bait Mixtures Offered In Harvested Cornfields During Spring Migration In South Dakota, George M. Linz, H. Jeffrey Homan, Ryan L. Wimberly

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The avicide, DRC-1339, is used to cull populations of spring-migrating blackbirds in eastern South Dakota to reduce damage to ripening sunflower in late summer. We investigated non-target bird hazards associated with using various grain mixtures to attract blackbirds (Icteridae), especially red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), to avicide-treated bait broadcast in harvested cornfields. During spring 1997 and 1998, we recorded the species and numbers of birds attracted to 0.2-ha plots baited with cracked corn and brown rice, fine-chipped sunflower meats and brown rice (1997 only), and unsupplemented brown rice. Unbaited plots were used as reference sites. In 1997 and 1998, …

Pathology Of Brucellosis In Bison From Yellowstone National Park, Jack C. Rhyan, Thomas Gidlewski, Thomas J. Roffe, Keith Aune, L. Michael Philo, Darla R. Ewalt

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Between February 1995 and June 1999, specimens from seven aborted bison (Bison bison) fetuses or stillborn calves and their placentas, two additional placentas, three dead neonates, one 2-wk-old calf, and 35 juvenile and adult female bison from Yellowstone National Park (USA) were submitted for bacteriologic and histopathologic examination. One adult animal with a retained placenta had recently aborted. Serum samples from the 35 juvenile and adult bison were tested for Brucella spp. antibodies. Twenty-six bison, including the cow with the retained placenta, were seropositive, one was suspect, and eight were seronegative. Brucella abortus biovar 1 was isolated from …

Review Of Human Rights In Global Politics, Christine M. Chinkin Jan 2001

Review Of Human Rights In Global Politics, Christine M. Chinkin

Reviews

The fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1998, coming in the decade after the resurgence of Western-style liberal democracies, has generated much writing and activity over the current status and future development of international human rights law, practice, and discourse. International lawyers tend to take for granted the canon of rights that, in the wake of the Universal Declaration, have been enshrined within the body of international instruments that have been adopted within regional and global arenas. In the 1990s, these lawyers largely turned their attention away from standard setting and to issues of effectiveness. Considerable …

Faith In Justice: Fiduciaries, Malpractice & Sexual Abuse By Clergy, Zanita E. Fenton Jan 2001

Faith In Justice: Fiduciaries, Malpractice & Sexual Abuse By Clergy, Zanita E. Fenton

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This article argues that perpetrators of sexual misconduct should not be granted refuge from the potential consequences of their actions by mere affiliation with a religious institution. Part I of this article examines the theories of malpractice and breach of fiduciary duty, and determines the appropriate cause of action for sexual misconduct and ascertains their capacities to withstand First Amendment scrutiny. Determining the cause of action is essential to the evaluation of the potential constitutional challenges. Part II demonstrates that sexual misconduct by clergy is well outside First Amendment constraints. It examines both the Free Exercise and Establishment Clauses, and …

Law Library Publications

This bibliography, now in its seventh edition, is a subject arrangement of selected English language treatises, looseleaf services and form books in the University of Michigan Law Library, current through 2001.

The goal of the bibliography is to list books that provide a starting point for legal research in major areas of American law. It includes only works published since 1990 or those kept current via looseleaf or other supplementation. Books that are kept up-to-date by some sort of supplementation are indicated by a hyphen following the publication date, e.g., "1949-". Faith, History, And The Conference On Faith And History, William Vance Trollinger Jan 2001

Faith, History, And The Conference On Faith And History, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

The author notes of this paper, given as a keynote address:

  • The talk that I give tonight is not the talk that I was originally planning to deliver at this conference. When I was asked to give the keynote address, I assumed that I would simply present an elongated version of the paper that I was going to give in this morning's session on "Peace, Justice, and Evangelicals"; my paper was to be on the strengths and weaknesses and omissions in the recent literature written by evangelicals on the notion of a Christian approach to history. But the more I …

Hiv And Partner Violence: Implications For Hiv Voluntary Counseling And Testing Programs In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Suzanne Maman, Jessie K. Mbwambo, Margaret Hogan, Gad P. Kilonzo, Michael D. Sweat, Ellen Weiss Jan 2001

Hiv And Partner Violence: Implications For Hiv Voluntary Counseling And Testing Programs In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Suzanne Maman, Jessie K. Mbwambo, Margaret Hogan, Gad P. Kilonzo, Michael D. Sweat, Ellen Weiss

HIV and AIDS

This study explored the links between HIV infection, serostatus disclosure, and partner violence among women attending a VCT clinic in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Men and women both perceive HIV testing as a way to plan for the future but are motivated to undergo testing by a number of different individual, relationship, and environmental factors. The women in our study described more barriers to HIV testing than did men, and women who have communicated with their partners about VCT before seeking services are significantly more likely to share their HIV test results than those who have not talked with their …

The Case For Microbicides: A Global Priority, Kathy Attawell Jan 2001

The Case For Microbicides: A Global Priority, Kathy Attawell

HIV and AIDS

The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to spread, undermining development, reversing health gains, and exacerbating poverty. It will be some time before a vaccine is available and accessible, thus there is an urgent need to identify additional prevention options, in particular a method that women control, which could save millions of lives. This report from the Population Council and International Family Health presents the case for microbicides—products used vaginally to prevent infection from HIV and other STIs in women and their sexual partners—and discusses recent progress and developments, outstanding challenges, and the action required to ensure that products will be made available …

Making A Difference For Children Affected By Aids: Baseline Findings From Operations Research In Uganda, Laelia Gilborn, Rebecca Nyonyintono, Robert Kabumbuli, Gabriel Jagwe-Wadda

HIV and AIDS

Many organizations and programs have begun to provide services and support to AIDS-orphaned children in East and southern Africa. Typical program components include the provision of school fees and supplies, supplementary feeding, home-visiting programs in which community members visit and assist affected children, and vocational training. However, few of these programs have been formally evaluated for impact. This paper reports on baseline findings from a study of two programs for AIDS-affected children and their families implemented by PLAN International in the Luwero and Tororo districts of Uganda. One program, referred to as orphan support, provides educational, health, and nutritional assistance …

Parenting And Child Competence: A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Moderating Influences Of Ethnicity, Family Socioeconomic Status, And Neighborhood Quality, Eric Curtis Dearing Jan 2001

Parenting And Child Competence: A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Moderating Influences Of Ethnicity, Family Socioeconomic Status, And Neighborhood Quality, Eric Curtis Dearing

Doctoral Dissertations

Although there is considerable evidence that parenting influences the behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children, the effects of some parenting behaviors may not be universal. In the present study, child ethnicity, family socioeconomic status, neighborhood quality (i.e., crime and median income), and cumulative risk (i.e., composite of family socioeconomic status and neighborhood quality) were modeled as potential moderators of associations between parenting (i.e., maternal sensitivity and traditional values) and four child outcomes (i.e., behavior problems, depression, loneliness, and school performance). Pathways of mediation for these parenting measures were also explored. In addition, age trends in neighborhood effects were …

Before Boulder: Professionalizing Clinical Psychology, 1896-1949, Ingrid Galusha Farreras Jan 2001

Before Boulder: Professionalizing Clinical Psychology, 1896-1949, Ingrid Galusha Farreras

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation documents the early history that led to the scientist-practitioner ("Boulder") model of training in clinical psychology. It uncovers pre-Boulder training guidelines and programs suggested by individuals and psychological organizations while exploring two themes: (1) the boundary issues between the budding clinical psychologists and the more established, elite mental health providers, particularly psychiatrists, between academic psychologists and these new clinical or applied psychologists, and between the various applied psychologists, and (2) how these training models (and organization membership requirements, codes of ethics, licensing and certification issues, and institutional accreditation) served as a way to professionalize clinical psychology, to improve …
