A Study Of The Effect Of The Integration Of Children's Literature Into The Science Curriculum On Student Understanding Of Scientific Concepts, Emily R. Morgan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The effect of integrating children's literature into the science curriculum on student understanding of science concepts was investigated. The study involved 354 third-grade students from 14 classrooms. Students in the traditional textbook group read and discussed the textbook on a certain science topic, performed a hands-on science activity or experiment on the topic, and were tested for understanding of that topic. Students in the literature group followed the same procedure but the textbook was substituted with science trade books. Student understanding was determined by collecting scores on district Performance Objective Assessments. Results were analyzed with a multivariate analysis using the …

Negotiating A Labyrinth: Uncovering Meaning Through Biography, Floretta Thornton-Reid Jan 2001

Negotiating A Labyrinth: Uncovering Meaning Through Biography, Floretta Thornton-Reid

Perspectives In Learning

Biographical method is one of “several intellectual disciplines that make use of life writing” (Smith, 1994, p. 286). However, biographies are probably better described as an interdisciplinary methodology that incorporates several approaches to qualitative research including but not limited to life history, narrative analysis, case study, historical social science, grounded theory and ethnography (Marshall & Rossman, 1999; Riessman, 1993; Atkinson, 1998). In laymen’s terms, a biography can be understood as the written history of a person’s life. Thus the life history or narrative story of a person is a key biographical concept. Controversy has long surrounded life history. Runyan (1982a) …

Cerumen Composition By Flash Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, Craig N. Burkhart, Michael A. Kruge, Craig G. Burkhart, Curtis Black

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Objective: To assess the chemical composition of cerumen by flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Study Design: Collected earwax specimens were fractionated into residue and supernatant by means of deoxycholate. This natural bile acid produces significantly better disintegration of earwax in vitro than do presently available ceruminolytic preparations, and also has demonstrated excellent clinical results in vivo to date.

Patients: The sample for analysis was obtained from a patient with clinical earwax impaction.

Results: The supernatant is composed of simple aromatic hydrocarbons, C5-Cl 7 straight-chain hydrocarbons, a complex mixture of compounds tentatively identified as diterpenoids, …

Compulsory Licensing Of Pharmaceuticals Under Trips: What Standard Of Compensation, Susan Vastano Vaughan Jan 2001

Compulsory Licensing Of Pharmaceuticals Under Trips: What Standard Of Compensation, Susan Vastano Vaughan

UC Law SF International Law Review

Harmonization of international intellectual property laws has been the object of considerable recent effort under both public international law and international trade law. The GATT Uruguay Round Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) resulted in significant steps toward harmonization. The proper application of compulsory licensing of patents under TRIPS has been the subject of much early debate. Proposed standards of compensation have been wildly divergent, reflecting the conflicting policy concerns of developed and developing nations.

This Note provides an overview of the conflict between developed and developing nations over the proper reach of intellectual property rights. It then …

Family Preservation Services To At-Risk Families: A Macro Case Study, Charles A. Sallee, Alvin L. Sallee

Journal of Family Strengths

Although the literature has provided many critiques of research done on family preservation programs, these critiques have usually been limited to the studies ' assumptions, approach, or methodology. Because of the nature of these critiques, suggestions for future research in this field of practice have been scattered throughout the literature and have not benefited from a wider historical perspective.

This paper examines the historical evolution of family preservation studies in child welfare and suggests future directions for research in the field. Among the suggestions the authors posit are (1) research questions should be framed by what we know about improvements …

A First Look At The Interim Merits Award In S.D. Myers, Inc. V. Canada: It Is Possible To Balance Legitimate Environmental Concerns With Investment Protection, Todd Weiler Jan 2001

A First Look At The Interim Merits Award In S.D. Myers, Inc. V. Canada: It Is Possible To Balance Legitimate Environmental Concerns With Investment Protection, Todd Weiler

UC Law SF International Law Review

This Article is a response to Joseph de Pencier's paper Investment, Environment and Dispute Settlement: Arbitration Under NAFTA Chapter Eleven in issue 23:3-4 of this journal. This reply is based upon the author's experience as counsel for the investor in S.D. Myers, Inc. v. Canada (Myers) and similar cases.

This Article provides a critical commentary on various elements of Mr. de Pencier's paper that deal with the Myers claim. It provides some tentative suggestions on how the substantive provisions of NAFTA Chapter 11 might be interpreted in future cases where investment protection and environmental protection appear to be at odds.

The Socialist Republic Of Vietnam's Labor Code: Looking Beyond The Printed Papers, Johnny Vinh Phan Jan 2001

The Socialist Republic Of Vietnam's Labor Code: Looking Beyond The Printed Papers, Johnny Vinh Phan

UC Law SF International Law Review

The Vietnamese government's anxiety and fear of foreign involvement within its borders can be traced back to its history of foreign domination. Many generations of Vietnamese endured continuous warfare to obtain Vietnam's current independence.

This Note walks through Vietnam's economic changes over the past fifteen years. It describes Vietnam's Labor Code, and analyzes the Vietnamese legal system's shortcomings in protecting workers from exploitation by multinational corporations. The Note then identifies possible explanations and solutions to some of the problems, and concludes with an overview of doi moi ("new economic thinking").

The Strategic Response Of Dublin's Traditional Department Stores To Intensifying Competition, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox Jan 2001

The Strategic Response Of Dublin's Traditional Department Stores To Intensifying Competition, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox

Articles

In Dublin city competition within the retail sector is intensifying and city-centre department stores, in common with other traders, face many challenges. Indigenous retailers must contend not only with each other, but also with an on-going invasion of international retailers who have been attracted by Ireland’s booming economy. UK multiples have made major in-roads into Dublin's retail scene and the city centre's latest shopping mall, The Jervis Centre, is so dominated by UK retailers that it has been christened 'Little Britain' In the past fifty years, many of Dublin's once dominant department stores have succumbed to the vagaries of retailing. …
